Finally the one wheel to rule them all! I already feel so sorry for whoever don't have enough spare money. Because if you are missing this, you are missing the history itself. I mean, just look at Veteran Sherman. I've never seen a more welcomed wheel on this forum. Nobody gives a shit about weight in 2020, it's all about battery and speed. And suspension. If there is one reason why KingSong and Inmotion were still being paid attention to after the Sherman, it's suspension. But now we have EX which is like Sherman with suspension. My deepest condolence for the new S18 and V11 owners, you impatience made better of you. Even if EX turns out to be utter disappointment in every possible way (I don't expect so), it's still landslide beyond any competition just based on specs. There is simple no way for the suspension wheel with these specs not to be the wheel to go if you can afford it.

No so fast...   I think what will happen is that the S18 is going to be the better trail wheel and the EX is going to be the better street wheel.  My impression, based purely on other people's reviews, is that the S18 will have the edge for trail riding because it's lighter, has more adjustability in the suspension,  more travel in the suspension, and has better ergonomics for your legs and feet.

Weight doesn't mean much on the street, but it makes all the difference in the world when it comes to popping over obstacles.  I'm completely on the fence between these two wheels.   I was firmly in the EX camp a few days ago and now I'm leaning towards the S18.   I may end up taking a sledge hammer to my bank account and getting both,  because the EX will clearly be a street monster and the S18 will be great on trails and off-road.

I think we're on the verge of the first real divergence in electric unicycles similar to street bikes and mountain bikes or street motorcycles and  dirt bikes...  A lot of people will take the S18  for all the reasons I've listed, but also because it'll be much cheaper simply because it has less battery.  So the S18 will have less barrier to entry into the world of suspension.  I think both of these wheels will be highly successful but for different reasons.

Where should I start... Let's go with the 5cm of suspension travel first. If you have the suspension pumped up perfectly for your weight, the travel is just shy of 1" up, and the same distance down from the center position until it bottoms/tops out. Either the linear design suspension must be tuned very hard, or it simply bottoms/tops out easily. Either way, it is not capable of absorbing shocks anywhere near to levels of the V11 and S18. I believe it can still be useful, but it's more like just running with a bit lower pressure on the tire. Except, being linear, not nearly as effective for small bumps.

Second, while not visible from the specs sheets, the lower ends of the shocks are exposed, thin, hanging low, and reach far from the tire to the side. This makes the wheel unsuitable for anything off road beyond relatively smooth pathways.

Third, weight. Even on the V11 the weight is a turn-off for some, despite weighing no more than some large battery 16"x3" Nikolas. The fact that the GW Ex weighs as much as the V11 and a small 14" EUC combined to me has "lack of design" written all over.

Lastly, we don't ride specs. We ride complete wheels, with important aspects most of which are not presented in the specs in the slightest. Geometry, comfort, grip, real-life range, fw behaviour, torque, motor smoothness, braking ability, trustworthiness, manufacturer's attitude, etc. Considering how 50+ km/h riders are just a small portion of EUC riders in general, how "MSX level torque" is more than sufficient for almost every rider on the planet, how the range of the V11 is good enough for most riders, how the headlight on the V11 is lightyears better than what GW will ever be capable of, and how the Ex costs almost as much as two V11s... the Ex doesn't really have anything going for it for the vast majority of EUC riders.

Staring at the specs only is getting more and more futile year by year. The leaps we've seen since 2015 have been huge for all riders, fast and slow. Staring at the specs was fruitful and even crucial back then. In 2020, it's getting pointless since they are already good enough for most of us. Most data in a spec sheet can be inflated and twisted anyway, and no matter what it reads, it doesn't say whether the wheel is good or not. Both in general, and to each individual rider.

EX is not like sherman. Veteran Sherman has no load speed of 103-105kph at full battery while EX has only 86kph. I will not ride this thing at 70+kph. The video on FB showing 69-70kph top speed might be a 60kg rider😄

To me

1. Sherman was welcomed as a (hopefully) more qualitative option to (cable mess & glue gun bob & plastic fantastic screw attachment) Gotway.

2. A wheel fast enough i dont need to worry bout cut off when cruising at 50-60km/h

3. Range is tied together with safety and battery. Bigger batt pack gives range, but also a higher speed without cutoff for a longer stretch. Aka you can ride 60km/h for a longer time without worry.

But problems for new manufacturers on the first wheel arose (expected).

- Not enough clearance due to bottom steel bar

- Rust and solder blobs in russian sherman (ecodrift) and i also saw some in marty backes video

- Pedals to narrow (epsecially at the front where foot is wide)

- Price, there is that. It costs as much as a decent 10 y.o. car 😁 or a new motor bike with far higher quality and safety.

- Leaky LCD (china manufacturing quality still obviously, if they cant seal an LCD with today's excellent sealants its either shitty work or wrong product used=shitty engineering. A bit like gotway outting tape on tesla to prevent water from spraying main board in the split of the shell halves HAHA)

- Overheat hill failure

Weight was my first worry but Veteran had been thinking one time to xtra and made a truly balanced wheel, so that didn't become an issue

 

I was extremely eager to get a sherman before summer but didnt due to delivery time. Now they have to provve they are better than gotway. They started out well with roll cage and metallic inserts for screws + balanced batt packs, but fucked up on a lot of other stuff.

Still, i would probably rather get the Sherman v2 (2021?) Than another gotway. But of course optimal would be a nonebot z20

That protruding bit beneath the pedals sure looks concerning! I hit all my wheels in that exact spot all the time. Perhaps it needs an aluminum shell to cover it at least.

At 38kg, if the lift switch is of a similar design as the Monster V3... RIP those poor microswitches

Also the red around the headlight is... cool I guess? Might be kinda ambiguous on the road. I would have preferred a better headlight over the red styling.

But overall, I'm really just curious how much of a difference the 5cm of suspension travel will really make.

I truly hope they don't end up doing this on the Monster Pro  I'm waiting for my Sherman like many others and I feared this would be an issue, as I have a tough time pushing past the beep (mentally, physically I could do it but I always stop myself). I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on my wheel speed, something I was hoping to not have to worry about too much on the Sherman...

At 80%+ battery sherman's 1st beep is at 65kph.  Considering that to bring down the battery to 80% you've been riding to almost 40-50km already. I think that's enough to most rider.

Hopefully when they're perfected....    I for one wouldn't want to drop a few grand on a wheel just to have it fall apart in a couple weeks or not live up to what was promised.  I'd rather they spent the time to get it right instead of rushing it out.

65kmh is what I bring my MSX up to usually, I was hoping to be able to go a bit faster for a bit longer 😅 we'll see, I may just end up getting a monster pro depending on how reviews turn out.
