I realize that some of my content is shocking to some, so I try to veil my liberty to some extent. Yes veiled reference to killing a dog with a firearm is a little over kill. Savage might have been a little more appropriate for your sexual preferences. "The National Institute of Occupational Safety (NIOSH) states that for a 115 decibel (dB) sound, the exposure limit is just 28 seconds". EUC Addict Posted December 4, 2020 Share Posted December 4, 2020 I experienced an unsettling and slightly scary situation while on a long ride in Goldendale, Washington, this past summer. I was probably 4 miles away from my destination with only 10 percent battery left on a King Song 18XL. I was rounding a bend on a country road going about 10 mph, trying to milk the battery. There was a house next to the road on my right, and as I was getting close to it a huge Saint Bernard charged me. I couldn't believe my luck. A huge dog is on an interception path with me and I can barely go 15 mph. I slowly sped up and just maintained speed. Thankfully the dog was not interested in chasing me down as soon as I passed it. Her attention was completely on the movement of the wheel. If it was an attack you would have been bitten. The best thing to do is stop. I am comfortable around dogs, and this was not a scary dog, just a large one that did not know what to do with itself besides bark a me a lot while I was enjoying the wheel! There are three elements to my tale; myself, the dog, and primarily the owner. It was a large dog, about the size of a German Shepard, but I am not a dog expert so I don't know the exact breed. I was riding in a park where owners commonly bring there dogs. It is not a dog park with fenced areas designed for dogs to run free. I saw the dog running free near its owner so I thought I would slowly continue on my way past the dog and owner while they were off to the side of the driveway in the grass. Maybe this was my failure for not just waiting many minutes for the owner and dog to clear the area. But something in me wanted to test the owner and dog while enjoying my right to the public thoroughfare. The dog was wearing a body harness for leash attachment and the owner was carrying a heavy duty leash. As soon as the dog saw me, it charged. It stopped about 10 feet short and went into a barking frenzy as it ran around me. I kept moving at a slow pace to keep its chase instinct somewhat relaxed. As it was charging, the owner said to me that it won't bite and that she was more concerned that it might knock me off that thing. I kept slowly moving along since the dog appeared to be all bark and no bite. The woman kept calling to her dog to leave me alone, but of course the dog had its own agenda for a bit. I said nothing during all this and just kept calmly moving along slowly, letting any spoken words come from her. At one point she was making excuses for the dog, saying that it had never seen anything like what I was on. Question ... Do dogs really care what something looks like? I believe they are more influence by the sound they must hear from the control board pulsing at high frequencies. During all this, part of me was testing the owner to see what she would do to control her dog. Her 1st fail was that she had let it run loose in a public place ... as many do that at this park. Maybe some dogs are better trained than others. This dog did not seem to be obedient. It finally relented and returned as she kept calling to it. Her 2nd fail was that she did not express any guilt, sorrow, but I could tell there was some minor embarrassment that she had let her untrained dog run loose, although she may have thought it was trained. The leash in her hand and the harness on the dog were somewhat meaningless at this point. I wonder when/if she intended to connect her leash to the dogs harness when on their walk. Once the EUC stopped the dog ran off though. The real problem seemed to be when the EUC was moving slowly and the dog was biting the shoe, if the EUC had stopped suddenly enough before the dog bit then it might have run off without biting. Just as kids, they dont stay small and less a threat forever. So much for my 'the dog wants to save the human from the wheel' theory. To be fair tho, fully geared, open pavement, sherman, dog even caught up to him? Blasphemy! The best method is simply to just stop. Dog's can be a little protective - it starts with something strange approaching them at speed, then there's the high pitched whine that most EUCs give off and helmets that definitely make us look not human (or friendly).
