Biden, European allies move to strip Russia of trade status

President Biden is scheduled this morning to ask Congress to eliminate trade preferences for Russia, adding to the financial pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin over his invasion of Ukraine.

The European Union also will take the first step toward implementing similar measures, which would have a much more dramatic impact upon the Russian economy.

The U.S. already has halted imports of Russian oil and energy products, which made up about 60 percent of the $26 billion in goods American buyers imported from Russia last year.

Two-way trade between the E.U. and Russia amounts to an annual $700 billion.

The moves, which the president is scheduled to announce this morning at the White House, will add to the toll of financial sanctions imposed over Russia’s war on Ukraine. The Russian ruble has plunged, the country’s stock market has been shut for more than a week, and foreign corporations are fleeing.

After two years of COVID, there is the war in Ukraine, after the nuclear threat which already stresses us a lot, we have the bacteriological threat with the existence  in Ukrania of research laboratories on pathogenic agents which risk being affected (or which are already) by conflicts, resulting in direct contamination of the population.

Markku Kangaspuro, director of the Aleksanteri Institute of the University of Helsinki, notes that the attack was an enormous miscalculation by President Vladimir Putin and the Russian government.

“They have totally miscalculated the situation.”

“Russians will at some point find out what this war is really about. At that point, the finger currently pointing at the West and Ukraine will turn towards Putin.”

Even though Putin’s attack was an error of judgement, Markku Kangaspuro finds it unproductive to keep repeating that Putin is insane. Instead we should try to understand why he is doing what he is doing.

Kangaspuro does not believe that Russia is afraid of NATO attacking any time soon. Instead, Russia is afraid of becoming the underdog to such a degree that it could be pressured through military means.

Putin also thought that if the expansion of NATO cannot be stopped by agreement, an open attack is the only option.

Four days after the Russian invasion, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that Germany would raise its defense spending to over 2% of its gross domestic product, while allocating an additional €100 billion to its current defense budget.

“Democratic Germany, which has gone through an immense internal process, is reassuming its place as a European military power, and preparing to use military force. Now Germany can do so again without people getting anxious,” Aunesluoma explains.

According to Aunesluoma, that is bigger news than the sanctions imposed by the West or the morale of the Ukrainians. Germany’s policy shift is a change that will go down in the history books.

Vladimir Putin has awakened Germany. That’s quite an achievement.”

https://www.ukrinform.net/rubric-ato/3428039-russia-offers-foreign-mercenaries-300-per-month-for-participation-in-ukraine-war.html

13.03.2022

Russia offers foreign mercenaries $300 per month for participation in Ukraine war.

That's according to the Telegram channel of the organization, Ukrinform reports.

Despite the plans of the Russian generals, their army is running out of manpower. And in order to somehow improve the situation, Russia resorted to a "trick" - it decided to involve 16,000 volunteer fighters from Syria, Libya and the Central African Republic in the war with Ukraine.

"As they say, 'noble' soldiers have a 'noble' goal: participation in the 'liberation movement in the Donbas.' The goal of receiving a reward of $300 per month of war looks more realistic.

What is even more realistic is that participation in the war is, in fact, the only chance for the population of these 'third world countries' to get to Europe. After all, as it was announced, if you surrender, you will end up in the EU," the statement reads.

The White House is briefing TikTok stars about the war in Ukraine

On Thursday afternoon, 30 top TikTok stars gathered on a Zoom call to receive key information about the war unfolding in Ukraine.

National Security Council staffers and White House press secretary Jen Psaki briefed the influencers about the United States’ strategic goals in the region and answered questions on distributing aid to Ukrainians, working with NATO and how the United States would react to a Russian use of nuclear weapons.

As the crisis in Ukraine has escalated, millions have turned to TikTok for information on what is happening there in real time.

TikTok videos offered some of the first glimpses of the Russian invasion and since then the platform has been a primary outlet for spreading news to the masses abroad. Ukrainian citizens hiding in bomb shelters or fleeing their homes have shared their stories to the platform, while dangerous misinformation and Russian propaganda have also spread.

And TikTok stars, many with millions of followers, have increasingly sought to make sense of the crisis for their audiences.

The White House has been closely watching TikTok’s rise as a dominant news source, leading to its decision to approach a select group of the platform’s most influential names.

Russia asks China for military equipment, U.S. officials say

Russia has turned to China for military equipment and aid in the weeks since it began its invasion of Ukraine, U.S. officials familiar with the matter told The Washington Post.

The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject, did not describe what kind of weaponry had been requested, or whether they know how China responded.

The development comes as White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan plans to travel to Rome on Monday to meet with his Chinese counterpart, Yang Jiechi.

Sullivan told CNN that the administration was “communicating directly, privately to Beijing, that there will absolutely be consequences” for any Chinese efforts to assist Russia in evading sanctions.”

Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, speaking Sunday in a television interview, noted that part of Moscow’s gold and foreign exchange reserves were in Chinese currency, Reuters reported. “And we see what pressure is being exerted by Western countries on China in order to limit mutual trade.”

“But I think that our partnership with China will still allow us to maintain the cooperation that we have achieved, and not only maintain, but also increase it in an environment where western markets are closing.”

This is the development that might hit our hobby badly. China would be wise to choose the right side but they’re still wanting to do something similar to Taiwan. It would hurt much more to cut trade with China. For us it’ll take years to get alternative wheels.

Udar: what?

Nitra: 6th regiment, I am collecting them, a lot of losses, cant report yet. Head of the column got into an ambush, commander is dead. I am checking the rest.

Disregard the advertisement at the start of the video.  The channel is not monetized in the sense of not seeking donations, paid memberships.

The Caspian Report channel seems quite objective, researched, factual.

It was established in 2010 and covers extensive topics of geopolitics.

It is not a recently started channel seeking to exploit an opportunity.

https://www.ukrinform.net/rubric-polytics/3430195-china-will-never-attack-ukraine-ambassador-assures.html

Tuesday, 15 March 2022

China will never attack Ukraine but will support it economically and politically.

"China and Ukraine are strategic partners, this year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries.

China is a friendly country for the Ukrainian people. As an ambassador, I can responsibly say that China will forever be a good force for Ukraine, both economically and politically.

We will always respect your state, we will develop relations on the basis of equality and mutual benefit.

We will respect the path chosen by Ukrainians because this is the sovereign right of every nation," Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Ukraine Fan Xianrong said at a meeting in Lviv Regional Military Administration, Ukrinform reports with reference to the administration’s press service.

He also said that the Chinese embassy had moved from Kyiv to Lviv and remained working there.

“China will never attack Ukraine, we will help, in particular in the economic direction. In one year, our country imports goods from around the world worth more than three trillion dollars. We are ready to help you develop. In this situation, which you have now, we will act responsibly. We have seen how great the unity of the Ukrainian people is, and that means its strength,” the Ambassador added.

Head of Lviv Regional Military Administration Maksym Kozytskyi thanked the Chinese ambassador for his position in supporting Ukraine in its fight against the aggressor. He also spoke about a large number of people willing to enlist in the territorial defense in Lviv region, about the shelter for internally displaced persons, and the supply of humanitarian aid to various regions of Ukraine.

The Lviv Regional Military Administration noted that China had already sent two batches of humanitarian aid to the Ukrainian people, and the third one is expected tomorrow.

https://www.ukrinform.net/rubric-ato/3430371-delegation-of-polish-czech-slovenian-pms-heading-from-lviv-to-kyiv.html

Tuesday, 15 March 2022

A delegation of the Polish, Czech and Slovenian prime ministers has already traveled by train to Lviv and is currently heading to Kyiv.

The head of the office of the Prime Minister of Poland, Michał Dworczyk, wrote this on Twitter, Ukrinform reports.

"A delegation led by Prime Ministers Mateusz Morawiecki and Jaroslaw Kaczynski has traveled to Lviv and is heading to the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv," Dworczyk wrote.

He stressed that this is a "historic event" and at the same time an unconditional statement of support for Ukraine by the entire European Union.

Earlier reports said that the prime ministers of Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia, Mateusz Morawiecki, Petr Fiala and Janez Jansa, as well as Poland's deputy prime minister for security and leader of the ruling Law and Justice party Jaroslaw Kaczynski, are leaving for Kyiv on Tuesday, March 15.

As representatives of the European Council, they will meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.

The trip was organized in agreement with European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The purpose of the visit is to confirm the unequivocal support of the European Union for the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine, as well as to present a broad package of support for the Ukrainian state and society.

The international community was informed about this visit through international organizations, including the United Nations.

This is the first visit by international guests of this level to Kyiv since the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

Biden to travel to Europe next week for NATO summit as Russia continues its brutal invasion of Ukraine

President Biden will travel to Belgium next week to participate in person at a March 24 summit at NATO headquarters in Brussels on “Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified attack on Ukraine,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday.

The trip is also intended to “reaffirm our ironclad commitment to our NATO allies,” Psaki told reporters.

She said Biden’s trip will also include attendance at a scheduled European Council summit “to discuss our shared concerns about Ukraine, including transatlantic efforts to impose economic costs on Russia.”

The German media, ZDF Frontal, provided a drone video, which recorded how the Russian military shot a civilian, standing with his hands up, near Kyiv.
