On March 4, Russia set to impose martial law – Ukraine’s NSDC secretary

The Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Oleksiy Danilov, has confirmed earlier reports that from March 4, the Russian Federation intends to impose martial law across the country.

The statement came as Danilov was speaking on the air of Ukraine 24 TV, answering questions about the possible application for martial law in Russia.

"First, this is the data available to our intelligence that from March 4, the Russian Federation is set to indeed impose martial law in the country. I’d like to see how Moscow and St. Petersburg, where there’s a lot of intellegenzia, will react to this, as they understand what is happening in the Russian Federation. Today, if Putin lacks cannon fodder, he can take children he’s drafting into the army to deploy here, into our meat grinder. I don't understand why he’s doing this," Danilov stressed.

He also noted that many Russians who hold positions in government don’t understand what is going on in Putin's head.

"Bombing our peaceful cities, bombing Kharkiv, bombing historic cities, killing children – what were you even thinking to commit all this?" said Danilov.

He also recalled the statement by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei avrov about the intention to remove nationalists from Ukraine.

"Then I must say that 95% of the citizens of our country must be killed," Danilov said.

"The Russians do not control the rear and much of the territory they have advanced through. Don’t post maps showing that they have allegedly occupied vast areas," the statement said.

I think that's fair and the US Pentagon did indicate.. in the North the supply lines are extended.. unlike the South where the Russians have had more success capturing cities and the supply lines are short.

Consequently, it's not implausible for the Ukrainians to let the Russians in - in the North - and then surround them and attempt to crush them; however the Russians are still not fully committed. Estimates are 80% in. So 20% in reserve - just across the border - that can move in and re-establish any lost zones of control.

The Pentagon also pointed out that Russia has quite a lot more troops, aircraft, etc. than what they originally staged/surrounded Ukraine with that can be called upon at any time - in addition to Belarus joining the war which they've indicated a willingness to do so. So.. there's quite a lot in reserve. At the moment, the Russians still believe they got it and aren't calling up reserves yet... so.. despite the mishaps and miscalculations, the Russians still believe they'll win... and US Intel still largely leans in that direction.. if for no other reason, sheer numbers.

Very fluid situation.

Lots of military aid enroute to Ukraine.

Russian commanders seem a little inept thus far, hopefully it continues.

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukraine-receive-more-missiles-turkish-drones-minister-says-2022-03-02/

LVIV, Ukraine, March 2 (Reuters) - Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov said on Wednesday the country was set to receive Stinger and Javelin missiles from abroad, as well as another shipment of Turkish drones.

Several Western countries have pledged to supply Ukraine with weapons to fend off a Russian invasion.

Yeah, the Pentagon indicated when asked that the supply lines to funnel additional weapons into Ukraine still remains open at this time.

The Russians are also aware of this and have also indicated that they will make some attempt to shut those down (no specifics as to how). I would guess that Ukrainian air power is stronger in the west and will give the Russians a run for their money should they attempt anything.

https://www.ukrinform.net/rubric-ato/3418616-pentagon-sees-no-indication-that-belarusian-troops-ready-to-join-fighting-in-ukraine.html

Thursday, 03 March 2022, 05:31

The U.S. Department of Defense sees no indication that the Belarusian military is getting involved or preparing to get involved in the hostilities in Ukraine.

“We have not,” Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said at a press briefing when asked if the Pentagon sees any indication that the Belarusian military is getting involved or preparing to get involved in hostilities in Ukraine.

He also noted that U.S. intelligence had not seen any indications that Putin was bringing in additional reinforcements from elsewhere in the country. According to Kirby, Putin has built up about 150,000 troops near Ukraine since last fall, and the majority of that combat power is now in Ukraine.

It starts to seem Russians are much more supportive of this war than I expected. They simply have been subject to propaganda for too long. This has been a long game for Putin. Those who don’t believe the government have either left or are pressured to stay silent. Even large parts of the smartest academics are supportive the “special operation to free Ukrainians.”

Yes, the premise for the Russian invasion of Ukraine to free ethnic Russians from oppression is the lie.

Russia’s Big Lie Leads to Immense Human Tragedy

The Kremlin and the Donbas “people’s republics” have been trying to imitate and fabricate evidence of genocide to justify their actions.

Russia’s Big Lie is that Ukraine was not “simply” targeting ethnic Russians in the Donbas — it was committing genocide.

It might be difficult to determine or conclude from the anecdotal evidence received by Tatyana Derugina as to the true extent of support from the academic communities.

In January 2022, a number of Russian intellectuals, academics, actors, writers and representatives of other professions did sign a letter addressed to the Russian leadership urging the Kremlin to avoid the invasion of Ukraine.

As to build up of arms in Ukraine and possible future threat, that might be true.

It still bogles me mind, that in Russia you can be jailed for many years, for simply saying your thoughts out loud. Just shows how backwards the country (Government) is.

It's also funny how most of soldiers are some "green" young age men. That where told simply go that way.. Not knowing why and for what.

Putler has simply lost his mind, nothing more or less. It makes me laugh, how he thought by taking over Ukraine, it would be so much better for his country.

But in reality, he has shot himself in foot. And made Russia much, much weaker than it ever has been.

Why hasn't than idiot been taken care of.. Are his inner circle also so dim-witted? Just shows how idiotic governments can be.

Again I do see in Putin rhetoric the same arguments that stupid Bush said to invade Irak. To free the country by removing the rogue corrupt and terrorist governement..

And yet there's a large proportion of Russian supporting this, amid of all the international manifestations. Same as when the world said not to invade Irak. Americans did ignore. Finished with half a million dead.

Sorry to see that repeat again.

Politicians should be careful of what they wish for. Others will do the same.

I  am really sorry for people in Ukraine and people in Russia... And in this line of thought for all people globally.

We have and will all have big trouble ahead.

What Putin will bring upon Russia is in the best case an iron curtain again.

Worst case: we're already knee deep in WWIII.

It should be noted that generally, it’s the young/ left/ progressive that protest the wars, and old/ conservative/ right that go along with the propaganda believing the same old lies. There were protests here before we invaded Iraq on false pretenses.

Indeed. As there is protest in Russia.

Hope they will be able to remove Putin from power (and not giving him another term, with honors and all, as Bush received afterwards...)

All all the destruction of majestic historic places and buildings.. such a shame

A besieged Ukraine has adopted a gruesome tactic in hopes of stoking anti-government rage inside Russia: posting photos and videos of captured and killed Russian soldiers on the Web for anyone to see.

On Telegram, Twitter and YouTube, Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs since Sunday has posted a constant stream of extremely graphic images showcasing the horrors of war and inviting Russians to examine them to determine whether the images feature a missing loved one.

In many of the images, soldiers’ corpses can be seen burned, ripped apart, mangled in wreckage or abandoned in snow; in some, their faces are featured in bloody close-ups, frozen in pain. The images are viewable by anyone with a Web browser or a smartphone and have been shared widely across the Internet.

Ukrainian officials have argued that the chilling images will alert Russians to a devastating war effort the Kremlin has sought to conceal.

After call with Putin, Macron convinced that ‘the worst is yet to come,’ French official says.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday, in what appeared to have been a markedly tenser exchange than previous conversations between the two leaders.

The 90-minute conversation failed to deliver a diplomatic breakthrough, and a senior French official said it left Macron convinced that “the worst is yet to come” and that Putin aims to take control of all of Ukraine.

A senior French official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because it is French government practice, said Putin’s remarks reflected a “determination to continue the military operation, and to continue it to the end.”

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/what-is-chain-command-potential-russian-nuclear-strikes-2022-03-02/

March 3, 2022

Factbox: The chain of command for potential Russian nuclear strikes

Here is how Russia's chain of command would work in the event of a nuclear weapon launch.

WHO DECIDES TO LAUNCH RUSSIAN NUCLEAR WEAPONS?

A 2020 document called "Basic Principles of State Policy of the Russian Federation on Nuclear Deterrence" says the Russian president takes the decision to use nuclear weapons.

A small briefcase, known as the Cheget, is kept close to the president at all times, linking him to the command and control network of Russia's strategic nuclear forces. The Cheget does not contain a nuclear launch button but rather transmits launch orders to the central military command - the General Staff.

IF PUTIN GIVES THE NUCLEAR ORDER, WHAT HAPPENS?

The Russian General Staff has access to the launch codes and has two methods of launching nuclear warheads. It can send authorisation codes to individual weapons commanders, who would then execute the launch procedures. There is also a back-up system, known as Perimetr, which allows the General Staff to directly initiate the launch of land-based missiles, bypassing all the immediate command posts.

DID PUTIN'S 'HIGH ALERT' ORDER MAKE A LAUNCH MORE LIKELY?

Putin said at the weekend that the nation's nuclear forces should be put on high alert. The following day, Russia's defence ministry announced that its nuclear missile forces had been placed on "enhanced" combat duty. read more

The phrase enhanced, or special, combat duty does not appear in Russia's nuclear doctrine, leaving military experts puzzled over what it might mean. read more

Pavel Podvig, a senior researcher at the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research in Geneva, said on Twitter that the order might have activated Russia's nuclear command and control system, essentially opening communication channels for any eventual launch order. Alternatively, he said it might just mean the Russians added staff to their nuclear facilities.

DO THE RUSSIANS HAVE RULES ON NUCLEAR LAUNCHES?

The 2020 doctrine presents four scenarios which might justify the use of Russian nuclear weapons:

-- the use of nuclear weapons or weapons of mass destruction against Russia or its allies;

-- data showing the launch of ballistic missiles aimed at Russia or its allies;

-- an attack on critical government or military sites that would undermine the country's nuclear forces response actions;

-- the use of conventional weapons against Russia "when the very existence of the state is in jeopardy".

WHAT NUCLEAR CAPABILITIES DOES RUSSIA HAVE?

The Federation of American Scientists estimates that Russia has 5,977 nuclear warheads, more than any other country. Of these, 1,588 are deployed and ready for use. Its missiles can be fired from the land, by submarines and by airplanes. Putin oversaw a coordinated test of Russia's nuclear forces on Feb. 19 shortly before ordering troops into Ukraine. read more
