Hunka Hunka Burning Love
With all the accidents related to EUC riding, I thought it would be a good idea to start a post about protective gear. I recently bought a motorcycle jacket which has elbow, shoulder, and back pads that can be inserted inside. Wearing it I feel a lot more confident and protected plus it just looks cool. I got one for summer use so it is made of mesh and allows air to flow through keeping you pretty cool. Here's a couple of suggestions - there are plenty on AliEx if you search for "motorcycle jacket." If you are in the US or Canada, be sure to go through Ebates (.com or .ca) to get some cashback. Keep in mind that a medium in China is like small in North America. I'm a medium usually for jackets, and I ordered a large as I'm a medium build. My jacket just fits exactly right. Some listings have measurement sizes or a sizing table so be sure to check those. If you have a large belly, have a long upper body or are heavy set you have to be very careful shopping for these online as the fit might not be right. The jackets tend to be slightly shorter in length I find. Please note I haven't checked out these sellers so you have to do some due diligence and confirm feedback scores yourself. Also make sure they come with a set of 5 padding inserts! http://www.aliexpress.com/item/FREE-SHIPPING-Dunham-summer-ride-motorcycle-clothing-motorcycle-jackets-automobile-race-jackets-racing-jackets/32413297176.html http://www.aliexpress.com/item/FREE-shipping-2015-spring-and-summer-off-road-motorcycle-ride-jackets-breathable-mesh-automobile-racing-jackets/32315011136.html Take note PU is not leather. The Fat Unicyclist
EUC protection is an odd thing (I think anyway) - it is subtly different from the "defined disciplines," and that makes it difficult to find (or know) the best options. I have been looking at Dianese - http://www.dainese.com/we_en/bike.html - which uses a soft cell to absorb impacts, in a way that (I think) might work quite well with EUC type spills. As for helmets... I currently have a standard "skater style" helmet, but I have been looking at MIPS options (http://www.mips.technology), which could be beneficial considering we're starting our fall from a higher altitude. In particular the Bell Super 2R (http://www.bellhelmets.com/en_eu/cycling/helmets/super-2r-mips-equipped#), which has a removable chin guard - making it ideal for both urban and off-road use. Hunka Hunka Burning Love
That Bell helmet looks awesome. I wonder though whether during a faceplant if the chin guard might deflect the head sideways twisting the neck. It does look springy though so it might just squish inwards absorbing forces. I've seen some Dianese jackets on AliEx, and they have some cool looking designs. Duhan also has some winning styles.

There's a few videos showing both the Bell testing and the chin guard impacts. Once again though, as this is designed for a different discipline we don't know how it would work with EUC. But then, standing up is much closer to the ground than a big MTB jump anyway...

One thing with the Dianese - the smaller components (e.g. elbow / knee guards) can be worn under clothing - which could be good if you don't want that EUCExtreme / Terminator look. Forester
I think for EUCs it's enough to apply these protecitve gear stuff: https://www.google.at/?gfe_rd=ssl&ei=Dwx5V8G_Ds2DaOGOiMAC#q=skateboard+protective+gear
dmethvin
If you want the pads to be a little less obvious, you can get motorcycle jeans that have pockets for removable pads. That way you could put them in while riding and take them out when you get to your destination. http://www.aliexpress.com/item/KOMINE-PK-718-motorcycle-men-pants-off-road-women-trousers-outdoor-men-jeans-cycling-have-pads/32620761224.html There's are some jackets with removable pads as well, they seem light for actual motorcycle use but probably plenty of protection for an EUC. http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2016-newest-Professional-Motorcycle-Jacket-with-Shoulder-Elbow-Protective-Pads-JK21/32656138563.html http://www.aliexpress.com/item/PRO-Biker-New-Men-Professional-Motorcycle-Jackets-Sportswear-Motocross-Auto-Racing-Cycling-Breathable-Reflective-Safety-Jacket/32240978453.html
thefork
I recently bought this MIPS helmet for use with my (yet to arrive) Inmotion V5F+: http://www.giro.com/eu_en/sutton-mips-9.html/ For wrist protection maybe something like this might work: http://www.xsportsprotective.com/collections/skateboard-longboard-wrist-guards/products/triple-eight-hired-hands-protective-gloves-pair That's probably all I'm going to wear (plus clothes...) for commuting at < 30 kph. Hunka Hunka Burning Love
I posted these elsewhere before, but I thought I'd consolidate them into this thread for easy reference. I don't know much ankle support they provide. Motorcycle Shoes/Boots: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Motorcycle-Boots-Pro-biker-SPEED-Bikers-Moto-Racing-Boots-Motocross-Motorbike-Shoes-40-41-42-43/1388498766.html When I was riding my generic 14" wheel I wasn't going over 11 KPH so I didn't feel a real big need for any protection. After reading several other people's experience with accidents and now riding my NB1E+ I wear a helmet, protective jacket, gloves, and I'm waiting for some knee pads to give a little more security. Nothing's going to prevent broken bones of course unless you wear padded full body armor, but at least it might help a little. Considering it's just one wheel that you're riding, these EUCs can be more accident prone than BMX bikes or motorcycles which at least have two wheels. Cloud
@HunkaHunkaBurningLove i just pulled the trigger on the iron man helmet you listed above lol. I found it on ebay slightly larger size and a bit cheaper. Maybe i can even use it for my tron costume i am planning to wear this helloween. Rest of the time i can be iron man which will make a nice combination with the under pedal ligts i got following another post here. In the dark, the helmet and the lights will make a nice combination. I might make the helmet's eye light up also, with some leds.
Hunka Hunka Burning Love
On AliExpress it can be difficult to size a helmet properly so people should use caution when ordering especially if the helmets are for children and not adults which might not be listed in the sale. Be sure it says adult, and try to check sizing if possible. Also be careful as some helmets are more for looks than function so they might not protect you as well as a certified one bought locally. @Cloud I almost bought one of these jet pilot helmets, but I thought ahhhh I seem to draw a lot of attention already rolling around. People might think it's a little too weird. I got a regular bike helmet instead to try out. http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Cool-Fashionable-TK-Chinese-Military-Air-Force-Jet-Pilot-Open-Face-Motorcycle-Helmet-Visor-SIZE-M/459667248.html

I found one of ebay that said 59-60cm and it was $39 with shipping. The reason i liked that iron man design is because it didnt look like amotocycle helmet - i didnt want to carry around something as massive looking,. It looks more lije a skateboarder's helmet. Also, i got the black version as it is not too flashy - i didnt really want to look exactly like iron man - it needs to be suitable for every day riding too, but when / if i wear a costume it needs be be within the overall fabric/ image of whoever i am portraying. I fugured whether its iron man or tron - this helmet woukd work, We will see if its any good when it arrives. http://www.ebay.com/itm/331841318249 the one you listed looks too military - too chinese or too russian-like, so yes you woukd be drawing too much attention, but it sure would be cool to ride around wearing that for a while
Hunka Hunka Burning Love
I think some of the Vespa partial coverage helmets are nice. I know what you mean about the full motorcycle type ones. My skater helmet is not too bad, and it has open ear areas so I can hear traffic and peripheral sounds better. Let us know how the Ironman one works turns out. It definitely looks like a fun theme helmet. I have seen some studies suggesting that helmets and mouthguards don't prevent concussions, but at least they might help avoid skull fractures and some lacerations... If money was no object... check out this gorgeous helmet: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cromwell-Hurricane-Classic-British-Motorcycle-Luxury-Vespa-Helmet-Cream-Medium-/201607104530 Also cool looking: http://www.ebay.com/itm/AGV-Blade-FX-Open-Face-3-4-Vespa-Scooter-DOT-Mens-Womens-Street-Helmet-/181797412714 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Momo-style-city-demi-jet-DOT-Helmet-for-Vespa-Motorcycle-Whites-blacks-/142020604373
Cloud
Yes these are nice. They are too motorcycly though, for the euc use. The first one looks a bit like its a world war 2 pilot's helmet. I like the third one the most. i dont think any helmet can prevent concussion.
thefork
After doing some research on wrist protection, I just ordered these: http://ennui-brand.com/portfolio/city-brace-2/ And I now have my MIPS helmet as well, fits like a glove (well, you know what I mean): http://www.giro.com/eu_en/sutton-mips-9.html/
Hunka Hunka Burning Love
Do these wrist protectors work well? I've tried some, and they never felt that natural to me as they really limit your hand movement. When falling, I'm not sure if tucking and rolling alone works best or using the hands and arms as a shock absorber would be better. Without using the arms or hands, I'd be afraid that collar bone fractures might be more common. Check out this guy's roll technique:
thefork
Well, my thinking is that I'm not going to have time for a conscious reaction, and the instinct is to use my hands to catch myself. And I would rather use my hands than my face, which would be the likely alternative if I were too afraid to use my hands.
steve454
Dang @HunkaHunkaBurningLove where do you come up with all these great, informative videos? I can imagine if I had a cutout on the wheel that I could do a tuck and roll. Good information to have. Getting more confident riding gravel trails now, found a big trail system near me, rode 2 1/2 miles yesterday, 1 1/2 today, lot of people walking dogs or running. Usually I stop and pretend to look at my phone, but a couple of times just rode on by and said howdy.

Hunka Hunka Burning Love
Looking at some wrist guard effectiveness information online, it does look like there were significant decreases in wrist injuries while using a good wrist guard. @steve454 Google is my best friend. I also attend Youtube University classes on a regular basis. @Rehab1 that Airwheel helmet looks interesting with the built in camera, but whoa it looks so like the helmet from Tron! Your brain is sloshing around in liquid inside your skull, it's still likely going to bang against the skull on a sudden stop (head hitting pavement), whether there's a helmet or not. So yes, concussion can still happen, but you have much lower chance of cracking your skull open EDIT: I don't care that much about looks, still going to go with this:
