level9
At this point there are some serious competency concerns with regards to the Russians. If they're going to accidentally get everyone killed anyway.. then their nuclear deterrent is now without teeth and the EU, UK, NATO and/or the US may as well join the war and we'll get this over and done with right quick. Paul A
Hopefully motive for the Russians attacking the nuclear power plant, is to control/disable/deny, electricity to Ukraine. Not to create another Chernobyl meltdown. The Zaporizhahia nuclear power plant is the largest in Europe, supplying about one quarter of Ukraine's electricity. ________________________________________________________ https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russia-blames-attack-nuclear-power-station-ukrainian-saboteurs-interfax-2022-03-04/ March 4, 20228:57 PM GMT+11 Russia blames attack at nuclear power station on Ukrainian saboteurs MOSCOW, March 4 (Reuters) - Russia's defence ministry on Friday blamed an attack at the site of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine on Ukrainian saboteurs, calling it a "monstrous provocation". Ukraine has said Russian forces attacked the plant in the early hours of Friday, setting an adjacent five-storey training facility on fire, in an incident that provoked international condemnation of Moscow, eight days into its invasion of Ukraine. Reuters could not independently verify either the Russian or the Ukrainian account of the incident. The account was diametrically opposed to Ukraine's version of events. Earlier, a video from the plant verified by Reuters showed a building aflame, and a volley of incoming shells, before a large incandescent ball lit up the sky, exploding beside a car park and sending smoke billowing across the compound. __________________________________________ Website for the Russian Defence Ministry is: https://eng.mil.ru/ It is offline. He said Russia saw no need to aggravate tensions with other countries, claiming that Moscow’s actions in Ukraine only came “in response to unfriendly actions toward Russia.” “We have no bad intentions. There is no need to escalate the situation, impose restrictions. We fulfill all obligations,” he said. “If someone does not want to cooperate with us within the framework of single cooperation, and by doing so harms themselves, they will, of course, harm us too.”
Popular Post level9
I do believe Putin just blinked. From what I'm hearing in the financial news what's going on in Russia is akin to when the Soviet Union collapsed. It's getting pretty bad.. 4
Popular Post Paul A
Yes, think Putin is succumbing to the pressure. He initiated the call to Macron. The statements made by Putin would appear to show he is cracking. Russian jets are being shot down, no air superiority or dominance. Convoy to Kyiv is still immobile after so many days. Russian reserves have been called up. Belarus does not appear to be participating. Numerous columns of Russian armour are being ambushed and destroyed. Numerous captured Russian soldiers giving insights to the low morale, deception, treatment, lack of belief/will to fight in the cause. Turkish drones used by Ukranians are having devastating effect. Incredible amount of military aid en route. Incredible amount of support from countries, multinational corporations, sanctions, punishments, the list just goes on and on. 2

It was supposed to be part of a cultural exchange programme. But on the opening day, the only things being swapped were thinly veiled barbs. As Vice-President Richard Nixon and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev shuffled past gleaming cars and model kitchens featuring dishwashers and TV dinners, they couldn’t help themselves. Nixon bragged about higher standards of living in the US. Khrushchev pointed out that the average American couldn’t afford any of this stuff and, besides, the average Soviet citizen would have it all before long. Then he made a promise: “When we catch you up, we will wave to you as we pass you by.” Khrushchev and Nixon talk kitchens Howard Sochurek/The Life Picture Collection/Getty 1

Richardo
I found some analysis from outside the sort of 'approved' messaging that is making me think a lot. https://patrickarmstrong.ca/2022/03/04/russia-ukraine-2/ Very different take than what I'm reading in the news, touching on some big ideas. Please don't read this if you will have a negative emotional reaction to someone saying Putin and Russia are not insane. Also, don't think that just because I shared an article I agree with it. I'm not a geopolitical scholar and don't have set opinions about any of this stuff.

Popular Post meepmeepmayer
That's not "another viewpoint", that's just plain delusional. Not sure if that is actually a real person or some really dumb propaganda (because there are a lot of the standard nonsense buzzwords and talking points in there). Reminds me of the pre-prepared "What an amazing quick complete total victory, Putin totally showed the West who's boss, new world order!" article that got released in Russian media (and quickly deleted) right after it was clear that the opposite of all these claims did happen. Anyways, the people who want to believe that Russia's "real" army is just waiting to get started... sure I would love to bet money against them, but sadly (for my wallet) I don't think they're real people. meepmeepmayer
If you want to follow this war, here is what I'm looking at: Some kind of Reddit live stream thing. It's just a timeline of tweets: https://www.reddit.com/live/18hnzysb1elcs/ For a reasonably follow-able overview with enough current info (but not too crazy much) and some discussion (but not too much, mostly) I found this (just go to the currently last page and then back from there): https://www.resetera.com/threads/russia-has-begun-a-full-scale-invasion-in-ukraine-read-staff-posts.556366/ It's better as an answer to "What is going on right now?" than a bunch of disconnected tweets. Not sure how good this map is, but it's the one I can find that has some kind of precision: https://liveuamap.com/. Wikipedia has a good map, too. Any other useful sources you know? Anyways, further good luck and good fight (sounds stupid to say this, but what else can they do) to the people of Ukraine.
