Russian president Vladimir Putin has said he has no problem with Ukraine joining the European Union.

Addressing Ukraine's bid for EU membership during a press conference on Friday, Putin said: "We have nothing against it, this is not a military bloc."

Earlier on Friday Ukraine took a step closer towards joining the EU after the European Commission recommended it to be granted candidate status to join the bloc.

Putin claimed on Friday that the EU will lose $400bn because of heavy sanctions against Moscow following its invasion of Ukraine.

War could take years, but the West must not let up in supporting Ukraine – Stoltenberg

With modern weapons, Ukraine would be able to liberate the country’s eastern region from Russian invaders, but it could take years.

The relevant statement was made by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in an interview with Germany’s Bild, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“Ukrainians are bravely defending themselves against Russian invaders.

Although Russia is waging the war in the Donbas with increasing brutality, Ukrainian soldiers are putting up brave resistance.

With more modern weapons, the likelihood increases that Ukraine will be able to drive Putin’s troops out of the Donbas,” Stoltenberg said.

Meanwhile, according to Stoltenberg, nobody knows when the war ends.

The West must prepare for the fact that it could take years and must not let up in supporting Ukraine.

German howitzers to arrive in Ukraine in coming weeks – Ambassador

Germany will send new howitzers to Ukraine in the coming weeks. Artillery and MLRS supplies are also expected.

"In addition to howitzers, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive HIMARS systems, which are supplied together with Britain and the United States.

HIMARS are now being assembled in Europe, and the Ukrainian military learns how to work with them," German Ambassador to Ukraine Anka Feldhusen said during the nationwide telethon on Saturday, Ukrinform reports with reference to zn.ua.

Moreover, according to her, modern anti-ballistic air defense systems, announced by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, are expected to be supplied in October.

"They are still being made," the German Ambassador said.

Enemy has no significant breakthroughs in Sievierodonetsk, tries to get closer to Kharkiv

The situation at the front is very difficult but controlled by the Ukrainian military.
The Russians actually have no progress in key areas.

"I would say that the situation is very difficult, especially in Sievierodonetsk direction, but controlled.

That is, now we can say that the Russians do not actually have progress in key areas, they really wanted, once again tried this night, over the past day, tried to make it to Bakhmut–Lysychansk route.

They again failed, we repulsed them again.

And, in fact, they have no significant breakthroughs in Sievierodonetsk,” Vadym Denysenko, adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, said during the nationwide telethon, Ukrinform reports.

At the same time, he noted that the situation was quite difficult in the north of Kharkiv region as the Russians were trying to get closer to Kharkiv and turn it back into a frontline city.

Denysenko stressed that the Russians wanted to get closer to Kharkiv to be able to fire on it heavily.

U.S. Ambassador Brink: Ukraine won’t fail, and we will continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes

Ukraine will not fail in the war with Russia, and the United States will continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes.

The relevant statement was made by United States Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink in an interview with Voice of America, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“Ukraine won't fail, and we will continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes. And as I mentioned, this is obviously very important to Ukraine, and it’s also really important to European security. It’s really important to America, because, as President Biden has said, it’s both morally outrageous what has happened, this unprovoked, unjustified attack on a sovereign nation,” Brink told.

In her words, it is in America’s vital interest to have peace and security in Europe, as this is something that has repercussions that go well beyond Ukraine.

“And for this reason, we all understand very much what’s at stake. And that’s why we’re here to help Ukraine prevail,” Brink noted.

According to Brink, those who are such strong supporters within the U.S. government, within the American population, for Ukraine, support Ukraine because they see and understand the future that Ukrainians want.

“And that is a future where Ukraine is free, independent, prosperous, sovereign and gets to decide its own future. To us, as Americans, it really appeals to also who we are,” Brink added.

Morale issues on both sides in eastern Ukraine, U.K. says

Ukrainian and Russian fighters have been locked in intense combat in the eastern Donbas region for weeks, with little change in the front line, and are probably experiencing “variable” morale, the British Defense Ministry said in its latest assessment.

Ukrainian forces have probably suffered desertions in recent weeks, according to the assessment, but Russian morale “highly likely remains especially troubled.”

Russian commanders in eastern Ukraine continue to face dissent from troops, with whole units refusing orders in some cases and armed standoffs happening between officers and soldiers.

Russian morale continues to be affected by perceived poor leadership, limited opportunity for rotation of units out of combat, very heavy casualties, combat stress, continued poor logistics and problems with pay, the assessment said.

Russia’s room for legal action against dissenting troops is limited because Moscow defines its actions in Ukraine as a “special military operation,” rather than a war. Authorities there have cracked down on anyone who dares to speak out against the invasion of Ukraine and charged others with “discrediting the Russian military” or spreading “false information.”

Wartime rules under which troops would be court-martialed for refusing orders are not in force, however, because of Russia’s definition of the conflict.

Kuleba: MFA negotiating resumption of McDonald’s activity in Ukraine

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs negotiates the re-opening of McDonald’s restaurants in Ukraine.

As Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba posted on Facebook, with the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, McDonald’s, like many other companies, suspended the operation of restaurants in Ukraine for security reasons.

But the MFA believes that now there are conditions to resume their work, so the diplomats actively persuade the company to return.

"A few weeks ago, we contacted the Ukrainian office and then McDonald's headquarters in the United States. We also raised this issue during official talks with the U.S. Government as McDonald's is one of the most famous American brands. The process is moving," Kuleba said.

The first McDonald’s restaurant in Ukraine opened in Kyiv on May 24, 1997. The company has more than 100 restaurants in 25 cities of Ukraine. Currently, they are closed for security reasons.

German railway may help with Ukraine’s grain exports from July

The German railway is planning to assist with Ukraine’s grain exports, and relevant trial operations are expected to be completed in July 2022.

The relevant statement was made by Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Ukraine Anka Feldhusen during an online briefing, an Ukrinform  correspondent reports.

According to Feldhusen, Ukraine’s grain exports via Odesa ports are impossible now, and different export solutions via the Ukrainian-Polish border are being developed.

“We want to help. The German railway is actively working with Ukrainian partners to carry out trial operations. I really hope we will complete such operations in July and will be able to export [Ukrainian] grain on a daily basis,” Feldhusen said.

Ukraine exporting by land about 1.5 million tonnes of grain a month

Ukraine has recently exported by land an average of 1.5 million tonnes of grain a month.

"In recent months, we have exported an average of 1.5 million tonnes of grain by land – by rail and by road," Olha Trofimtseva, Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Coordinator of the Exporters and Investors Council, said at an online briefing on Monday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

She noted that European infrastructure and logistics were not ready for the amount of grain exported by Ukraine.

In this context, the diplomat praised the efforts of Poland, Germany and other countries to build transit hubs on the borders, accelerated passage of trains with Ukrainian grain between countries to ports where it can be loaded on ships.

"We have recently heard President Biden saying that the United States will also build temporary grain storage facilities in Poland near the Ukrainian border to relieve Ukrainian grain storage facilities before the 2022 harvest," said the coordinator of the Exporters and Investors Council.

As reported, 7 million tonnes of wheat, 14 million tonnes of corn grain, 3 million tonnes of sunflower oil, and 3 million tonnes of sunflower meal have not entered the world market due to Russia’s blockade of Ukrainian seaports.

This has already led to a record rise in world market prices and will inevitably result in a global food crisis and rising inflation.

Biden says Ukraine's membership of EU 'very likely'

U.S. President Joe Biden has said that it is "very likely" that Ukraine will gain full membership in the European Union.

He said this on Monday during his trip to Delaware, Ukrinform reports, citing the C-SPAN TV channel.

"I think that's what could very likely happen," Biden said when asked if he was confident that Ukraine would join the EU.

Biden also said it was unlikely that he would visit Ukraine during a trip to Europe this month to attend the G7 and NATO summits. He also noted that he and his administration are in constant contact with the Ukrainian leadership.

Earlier reports said that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin paid an official visit to Kyiv in April.

Charles Michel invites EU leaders to attend summit that could become historic for Ukraine

European Council President Charles Michel has published an invitation letter to the members of the Council ahead of their meeting in Brussels on June 23-24, 2022, that Michel believes could be of a great significance for Ukraine’s European integration.

The letter was published on the Council’s webpage, Ukrinform reports.

“With war back in Europe, we have taken unprecedented action, projecting the EU's  geopolitical clout. We now need to take further steps to strengthen our continent’s security and stability. This will be the main focus of our European Council meeting on 23-24 June. Now is the time to acknowledge that the future of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia lies within the EU. I will invite you to grant candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova. In parallel, we will continue to provide Ukraine with strong humanitarian, military, economic and financial support,” the letter reads.

The Western Balkans are important to the EU, and the EU is important to the Western Balkans, Michel said, adding that the EU must therefore re-energize the enlargement process and advance the integration of our Western Balkan partners. “We will meet them before our formal European Council,” he wrote.

Nobel Prize auctioned to help Ukrainian children sells for record $103.5 million

The Nobel Peace Prize auctioned off by Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov to support children displaced by the war in Ukraine sold for $103.5 million, Heritage Auctions confirmed Monday night.

The auction set a record for the most money ever paid for a Nobel Prize medal.

All of the money raised will be donated to UNICEF’s humanitarian response to help displaced children in Ukraine and neighboring countries.

Muratov, the editor of Russia’s last independent newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, received the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize alongside Filipino journalist Maria Ressa for their work in promoting independent journalism in the face of growing threats and authoritarianism.

The front page of Novaya Gazeta’s first issue after Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine showed the words “Russia is bombing Ukraine” in Russian and Ukrainian.

Just over a month later, however, the newspaper announced it would suspend its operations until the end of the Ukraine war, having received a second warning from Russia’s communications regulator.

Ukrainian defense prevents Russia from establishing control over Black Sea near Odesa - British intelligence

The coastal defense of Ukrainian forces has neutralized Russia's ability to establish control over the northwestern part of the Black Sea.

According to Ukrinform, the UK Ministry of Defense said this in its latest defense intelligence update on the situation in Ukraine.

"Ukrainian coastal defense capability has largely neutralized Russia's ability to establish sea control and project maritime force in the north-western Black Sea.," the ministry said.

It added that this has undermined the viability of Russia's original operational design for the invasion, which involved holding the Odesa region at risk from the sea.

On June 17, the Ukrainian Navy struck the Russian tugboat Vasily Bekh in the Black Sea, affecting up to 70% of the crew.

Russia is conducting simulated missile attacks against Estonia

Tallinn Says Russian War Games Simulate Attack on Estonia (1:00 p.m.)

Russia is conducting military exercises that simulate missile attacks on Estonia, the Baltic country’s Defense Ministry said.

Provocative behavior on the Estonian-Russian border has escalated in recent days as NATO prepares to hold a summit in Madrid next week, the ministry said in an emailed response to questions, without providing more details on the location of the exercises.

Earlier, the Estonian Foreign Ministry summoned the Kremlin’s ambassador to Tallinn, saying that a Russian military helicopter flew into its airspace on June 18 in the first such instance since the February invasion of Ukraine.
