Paul A
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/06/16/ukraine-war-macron-scholz-zelensky/ June 16, 2022 Leaders of France, Germany and Italy make first wartime trip to Kyiv BERLIN — The leaders of France, Germany and Italy traveled to Ukraine on Thursday during a decisive moment in the war, as President Volodymyr Zelensky pleads for more weapons in the struggle to fend off Russia’s assault in the east. French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi traveled to Kyiv by train on Thursday morning — with air raid sirens in the city sounding shortly after their arrival. The three leaders “want to show their support for Ukraine and the citizens of Ukraine,” Scholz said on arrival in Kyiv, Germany’s DPA news agency reported. “But we don’t just want to demonstrate solidarity, we also want to assure that the help we organize — financial and humanitarian, but also when it comes to weapons — will be continued,” he said. The trip by the leaders of the European Union’s three largest economies comes as Ukraine is in negotiations to begin the process of joining the 27-member bloc. Paul A
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/06/15/nato-aid-ukraine/?itid=lk_fullstory June 15, 2022 U.S. to send $1 billion in military aid to bolster Ukrainian fight BRUSSELS — The United States will send an additional $1 billion in military aid to Ukraine, President Biden announced Wednesday, bolstering Ukrainian forces as they are pummeled by a Russian offensive in the country’s east. The massive arms package, which will include ammunition, artillery systems and, for the first time from the United States, mobile Harpoon anti-ship missile launchers, underscores the high stakes of Ukraine’s attempt to repel a powerful Russian assault in the Donbas region and fears that the Kremlin could still target port cities such as Odessa. “The United States, together with our allies and partners, will not waver in our commitment to the Ukrainian people as they fight for their freedom,” Biden said in a statement after a call with President Volodymyr Zelensky. The scale of the assistance, the United States’ single largest aid package for Ukraine to date, represents an acknowledgment that the war will probably continue for many months more, generating disastrous effects for the world economy and global hunger. To move forward, all 27 member states must agree. Even if they do, full membership could be many years away. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the “historic decision” and said the “positive” first step on his country’s “E.U. membership path,” would bring “victory closer” to Ukraine. Leaders of four European Union nations vowed to back Kyiv's bid to become an official candidate to join the bloc in a high-profile show of support for the country fending off a Russian invasion. Russian business people have rallied together, working diligently, conscientiously, and step-by-step, we are normalizing the economic situation.” He also accused Western powers of treating countries such as Russia as “second rate.” “This is the nature of the current bout of Russophobia in the West, as well as the regular sanctions against Russia,” Putin said.

Speaking out against Russia’s invasion is being criminalized, the ministry noted, adding that the war “has accelerated the state’s long-term trajectory towards authoritarianism” and that Russia’s parliament has moved to introduce 20-year jail terms for Russians who fight or take up arms against the nation. But among everyday Russians, the mood is changing, the ministry said. “Despite the majority of Russians telling pollsters they support the ‘special military operation’, elements of the population both actively and passively demonstrate their opposition,” it said. “Some high profile Russian officials have highly likely been side-lined after criticizing the war.” It said skepticism was “particularly strong” among Russia’s business elite, with migration applications indicating that some 15,000 Russian millionaires “are likely already attempting to leave the country.” Motivations for such an exodus include “personal opposition to the invasion and an intent to escape the financial impact of the sanctions imposed on Russia,” the ministry added.
Paul A
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/06/16/estonia-kallas-ukraine-allies-aid/ June 16, 2022 Estonian leader urges faster help for Ukraine amid signs of war fatigue Ukraine’s allies need to accelerate their military assistance and other forms of aid before war fatigue takes hold in the West and Russia makes territorial gains that could become permanent, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said. Kallas, who has emerged as one of Europe’s most outspoken proponents of a robust response to the Russian invasion, said it is vital for Europe and the United States to remain focused on helping Ukraine to win, despite waning public attention on the four-month-old war, which seems set to drag on for many more months. After Ukraine’s initial success in beating Russian troops back from around the capital, Kyiv, Russia has been making slow but steady gains against outgunned Ukrainian forces, who have been appealing to the West for deliveries of more-sophisticated weapons to help match Russia’s overwhelming firepower. Kallas said she is concerned by calls from some European leaders for peace talks, which would risk entrenching Russian gains at a time when it is the Russians who have the upper hand on the battlefield. Kallas declined to name any specific countries, but French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz have in recent weeks said they would like to see peace talks begin. On the eve of his visit to Kyiv on Thursday, Macron said it was his “wish” that Ukraine wins on the battlefield, adding that eventually negotiations are inevitable. “I worry that we hear calls for peace negotiations, which very generally means Ukraine should give away some of its territory. The big question has to be why Ukraine has to give up territory,” says Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, shown here in May. China's main way of projecting air power has been to create fortress islands which are cheaper and more resilient. I suspect this is more for show and prestige then actually challenging American Naval dominance. Air Craft carriers are glass cannons like tanks, which Russia has learned. Firepower just outpaces armor exponentially in today's world. Russia is now using Artillery instead of tanks. Honestly I thought they learned their lesson in Crimea The Javelin has made Russian tanks useless in Ukraine and modern C5ISR technology, anti ship missiles, submarines, and drones will probably do the same for carriers. They will sit in port like the battleship Yamamoto did during WW2. Too expensive to risk losing. Edited June 18, 2022 by Jswizzy84
