Andrei Kelin said that according to Russian military rules, such weapons are not used in conflicts like this.

On the use of nuclear weapons, Mr Kelin said Russia has very strict rules for their use, mainly when the state's existence is threatened.

"It has nothing to do with the current operation," he told BBC One's Sunday Morning.

Biden confirms U.S. is sending advanced rocket systems to Ukraine

President Biden on Tuesday confirmed that his administration is sending medium-range advanced rocket systems to Ukraine, responding to a top request from Ukrainian officials who say the weapons are necessary to curb the advance of Russian forces in the east.

Biden said the more advanced rocket systems and munitions, which can pinpoint an enemy target nearly 50 miles away, will enable Ukraine “to more precisely strike key targets on the battlefield.”

Ukrainian officials provided assurances they would not use the weapons to strike targets inside Russia, a senior U.S. official said.

Such a move could risk an escalation in the conflict, potentially provoking Russian retaliation against U.S. forces or allies.

The United States is sending the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, which will extend Ukraine’s reach in the ongoing artillery war with Russia, a senior administration official said Tuesday.

The United States will not provide the longest-range munitions for the system to Ukraine, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive military matters.

The tank was firing on Ukrainian positions before running over the landmines.

Miraculously, two crew members appeared from the burning tank seemingly unharmed.

Denmark to vote on joining E.U. defense framework

Danes head to the polls Wednesday to decide whether Denmark should join the European Union’s Common Security and Defense Policy, which would allow the country to participate in E.U. military exercises and operations.

The referendum was announced in March amid the war in Ukraine. Denmark opted out of the defense framework some 30 years ago and is the only country in the 27-nation bloc that is not a part of it.

Should Denmark opt in to the framework, it would mark another significant shift in the region’s defense policy as the ripples of the war in Ukraine continue to spread across Europe.

Sweden and Finland last month ditched years of military neutrality when they applied to join NATO, citing concerns over rising Russian aggression.

Denmark is a founding NATO member.

U.S., allies are looking for solutions to free up millions of tons of grain stuck in Ukraine

The U.S. administration, together with allies and partners, are working out options to ease the fallout of the food crisis that is unfolding over the ongoing war Russia is waging against Ukraine, to unblock Ukrainian seaports and help Ukraine export its grain intended for global markets.

That’s according to CNN citing administration officials, Ukrinform reports.

UN and Turkish officials are preparing for separate rounds of diplomatic talks with Moscow coalescing around a new plan to try to open up sea routes for Ukrainian grains, sources say.

Meanwhile, millions of tonnes of grain remain stuck in Ukraine, stored in silos and at the port in Odesa, leading to a dramatic spike in global food prices that’s likely to worsen as the war continues.

Denmark votes to join E.U. defense framework as Russia cuts more gas shipments

Denmark on Wednesday voted to join the European Union’s Common Security and Defense Policy, a move that further signified the desire for stronger defense ties on the continent in light of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

In a national referendum, nearly 67 percent of voters chose to end Denmark’s three-decade policy opting out of the E.U. security framework.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen welcomed the outcome, saying she was “very, very happy” with the majority’s choice, according to the Associated Press.

“With the decision we have made, we show that when [Russian President Vladimir Putin] invades a free and independent country and threatens peace and stability, we will move closer together,” Frederiksen said after the vote.

Russia says it will protect safety of ships carrying grain from Ukraine

The Russian Defense Ministry said Thursday that grain can be exported from Ukraine’s ports in the Black Sea using humanitarian corridors, amid concerns that a Russian blockade could threaten the global food supply.

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin also said his country’s armed forces are willing to ensure the safety of ships carrying grain out of Ukraine. He added that Moscow will not use the humanitarian situation for what it calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

The comments came during a meeting in Moscow with Martin Griffiths, the United Nations’ undersecretary general for humanitarian affairs, according to a readout from the Russian Defense Ministry.

U.S. intelligence reports have shown that a Russian naval blockade has halted trade at ports in Ukraine, the world’s largest exporter of sunflower oil, fourth-largest exporter of corn and fifth-largest exporter of wheat.

Western officials have described Ukraine’s exports as essential to global food security and accused Russia of using food as a form of blackmail.

The Russian navy effectively controls all traffic in the northern third of the Black Sea, according to U.S. intelligence assessments.

Beijing chafes at Moscow’s requests for support, Chinese officials say

Russian officials have raised increasingly frustrated requests for greater support during discussions with Beijing in recent weeks, calling on China to live up to its affirmation of a “no limits” partnership made weeks before the war in Ukraine began.

But China’s leadership wants to expand assistance for Russia without running afoul of Western sanctions and has set limits on what it will do, according to Chinese and U.S. officials.

Moscow has on at least two occasions pressed Beijing to offer new forms of economic support — exchanges that one Chinese official described as “tense.” The officials familiar with the talks spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the matter’s sensitivity.

They declined to share specifics of Russia’s requests, but one official said it included maintaining “trade commitments” predating the Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, and financial and technological support now sanctioned by the United States and other countries.

“China has made clear its position on the situation in Ukraine, and on the illegal sanctions against Russia,” said a person in Beijing with direct knowledge of the discussions. “We understand [Moscow’s] predicament. But we cannot ignore our own situation in this dialogue. China will always act in the best interest of the Chinese people.”

China is in a bind as it seeks to help its most important strategic partner, which started a war that Beijing did not anticipate would now be entering its fourth month, Chinese and U.S. officials said.

They said that President Xi Jinping has tasked his closest advisers to come up with ways to help Russia financially but without violating sanctions.

Baltic states reach accord to snub Russian electricity

Baltic energy system operators – Estonia's Elering, Latvia's Augstsprieguma tīkls (AST), and Lithuania's Litgrid have signed an agreement to stop buying electricity in Russia.

This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to AST.

According to the Latvian company, the Baltic electricity market will be connected only with Poland and the Scandinavian countries from June 1.

One of the reasons for this decision in AST called problems with payments: several banks, through which money was previously transferred to Russia, are now under sanctions.

The changes introduced by the electricity transmission system operators will reduce the dependence of the Baltic States on the Russian energy system, and will contribute to ensuring the balance of electricity of the Baltic power system with the balancing capacities in the Baltic Sea region.

Previously, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania used the services of the Russian energy company Inter RAO to this end.

According to the report, war criminals bring ships of the merchant fleet to the roadstead of Sevastopol with the AIS identification systems turned off so that they cannot be recognized as civilian ships.

Fifty embassies now operating in Kyiv, Zelensky says

Fifty embassies are now operating in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his nightly address Thursday, marking a symbolic and diplomatic milestone for the war-torn country.

The newly appointed U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Brink, assumed her post this week, presenting her credentials to Zelensky at St. Sophia’s Cathedral in Kyiv alongside her Indian and Moldovan counterparts.

Ukraine has not had a U.S. ambassador since 2019, when President Donald Trump removed Marie Yovanovitch from the position.
