Russia using Soviet missiles against Ukraine due to lack of modern weapons - British intelligence

Since April, Russia has launched dozens of old Kh-22 anti-ship missiles across Ukraine probably due to the fact that it is running short of more precise modern missiles.

The UK Ministry of Defense said this in its latest intelligence update published on Twitter, Ukrinform reports.

According to the statement, since April, Russian medium bombers have likely launched dozens of 1960s era Kh-22 air-launched, heavy anti-ship missiles, primarily designed to destroy aircraft carriers, against land targets due to the lack of "more precise modern missiles."

When employed in a ground attack role with a conventional warhead, such missiles are "highly inaccurate" and can therefore cause significant collateral damage and civilian casualties, the ministry said.

At the same time, British intelligence noted that Ukrainian air defenses still deter Russian tactical aircraft from conducting strikes across much of the country.

Intelligence also said that as of 10 June, Russian forces around Sievierodonetsk have not made advances into the south of the city but "intense street to street fighting is ongoing and both sides are likely suffering high numbers of casualties."

Russian troops tried to establish full control over the Luhansk region by June 10, but, according to Serhii Haidai, head of the regional military administration, the Russian command has already called a new deadline - Russia Day, which falls on June 12.

Russia still seeking new combat units for Ukraine war, U.K. says

Moscow continues to seek reinforcements for its war effort in Ukraine, the British Defense Ministry said Sunday.

According to the ministry’s daily intelligence update, Russia is likely preparing to send third battalions — which are normally not deployed and often are not fully staffed — from some brigades to bolster its forces fighting in Ukraine.

Russia would probably have to rely on recruits or reservists to staff the units, the Defense Ministry said.

The plan to deploy more combat units to Ukraine is intended to offset Russia’s heavy losses, but it could ultimately reduce the ability of brigades to “regenerate combat power after operations,” the update said.

Speaking from near the frontlines, Mykolaiv Regional Governor Vitaliy Kim called for more support from U.S. and European allies, VOA News reported. He also indicated that, at least in his region of Ukraine, forces are running low on ammunition.

"Russia's army is more powerful, they have a lot of artillery and ammo. For now, this is a war of artillery... and we are out of ammo," Kim said. "The help of Europe and America is very, very important."

Russia’s ex-premier: If Ukraine falls, ‘Baltic states will be next’

Former Russian prime minister Mikhail Kasyanov described President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine as “a criminal war” — one that Ukraine must win or the “Baltic states will be next.”

Kasyanov, who served as prime minister from 2000 to 2004, was abruptly fired by Putin along with the rest of his cabinet in a move that culminated years of tension between the pair and blindsided much of the government, The Washington Post reported at the time.

Speaking by video to Agence France-Presse from an undisclosed location, Kasyanov, who is now one of the Kremlin’s most prominent critics, said he believes that the conflict could last up to two years and that Putin is not thinking logically, AFP reported Monday.

Russia using thermobaric weapons in Ukraine, Finnish president says

Russia is dropping thermobaric bombs in its war against Ukraine, Finland’s president said Monday, noting that both sides are using heavier weapons in the conflict.

“We are supporting Ukraine with increasingly heavy weaponry,” Sauli Niinisto said. “Russia has also begun to use very powerful weapons, thermobaric bombs that are in fact weapons of mass destruction.”

Thermobaric weapons, also known as vacuum bombs, create significant heat and pressure when detonated, causing longer, deadlier blast waves than conventional explosives.

Finland, along with Nordic neighbor Sweden, has applied to join NATO, abandoning decades-long military neutrality after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine raised alarm about Russian threats to other neighbors. Finland shares an 830-mile border with Russia.

Photos: Russia Day marked by protest and celebration
In Russia, June 12 is celebrated as the day the country declared its sovereignty in a document that symbolized the start of democratic reforms in 1990 and the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

But alongside celebrations, the day also sparked acts of protest inside and outside Russia denouncing the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

In Poland, members of the Russian diaspora marched to the Russian Embassy in Warsaw under the slogan “Russia’s Independence Day from Putinism.”

Protesters carried posters calling for an end to the war and to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime.

In one poster, the face of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was drawn on top of the country’s flag, with the phrase “We are with you” written in Polish.

In Moscow, antiwar artists placed a banner outside the headquarters of the Russian armed forces’ General Staff, a Reuters photo showed.

“This is not our day,” a slogan on the flag said.

NATO allies to send Ukraine all weapons it needs to prevail - Stoltenberg

NATO allies today will decide on how to deliver to Ukraine the weapons it urgently needs to stop Russian invasion and win this war, unleashed in Europe by Russia.

That’s according to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who spoke at a press conference ahead of the meeting of NATO member states’ defense ministers, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“Tonight we will meet with Ukraine, Georgia, Sweden, Finland, and the European Union. This will be an opportunity for Defense Minister Reznikov to update us on what Ukraine urgently needs. And for NATO Allies to make new announcements of support to Ukraine. Allies are committed to continue providing the military equipment that Ukraine needs to prevail, including heavy weapons and long range systems,” Stoltenberg stressed.

He noted that NATO allies and partners had been providing security assistance weapons worth billions of dollars, alongside economic and humanitarian support.

Austin to host defense leaders from 50 countries that support Ukraine

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will meet with defense leaders from some 50 nations Wednesday to discuss future military assistance for Ukraine.

The meeting, which will take place in Brussels alongside a gathering of NATO defense ministers, comes shortly after Washington pledged to send four advanced M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, to Ukraine.

Weapons handling training for Ukrainian soldiers is now a priority, according to the Pentagon.

Learning to operate the HIMARS, for instance, takes at least three weeks.

Ukraine has repeatedly asked for more sophisticated weapons as it goes up against Russia’s superior arsenal.

Ukrainian troops exhausted, outgunned, need training, U.K. official says

British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said Wednesday that Ukrainian troops on the front lines are “exhausted” and outgunned, and he argued that the West’s focus should be on training them rather than on giving Ukraine more weapons.

Wallace made the remarks at a news conference with Norwegian Defense Minister Bjorn Arild Gram in Oslo, on the margins of a meeting of the Joint Expeditionary Force, a defense coalition of Northern European nations.

This involves giving Ukraine not just ″equipment” but also “the vital software, the know-how, to make sure they can make the maximum use of it,” he added.

Some Ukrainian soldiers fighting in the east have been there for 90 days and ″are exhausted,” Wallace said. “They are often, in artillery terms, outnumbered at very, very high ratios.”

He argued that the West needs to show Ukraine how “to replace people on the front line” and how to develop a strategic counteroffensive.

Amid Official Silence, Russian Soldiers’ Families Get Answers From the Enemy

Ukrainian volunteer groups, under the loose name of an “IT Army,” work to spread information and photos of deceased Russian military personnel on social media – particularly on Vkontakte and messaging app Telegram – to inform their families in Russia.

......including Cargo 200, which posts pictures of dead soldiers and prisoners, and Gorushko, which re-posts public information about dead servicemen.

The Ukrainian government has also established the “Come Back Alive from Ukraine” hotline for relatives of Russian soldiers seeking information about their loved ones.

While the work of Ukraine’s “IT Army” fills an information vacuum about military casualties, publishing pictures of the dead soldiers online and sharing them with family members raises many ethical questions, according to expert Ashbridge.

Mistaken identifications could become more common as the fighting in Ukraine continues into the summer and higher temperatures mean decomposition occurs faster, she said.

IKEA to Scale Down Operations in Russia, Sell Factories – RBC

Swedish furniture retailer IKEA will scale down its business operations in Russia and sell all four country-based factories, the RBC business daily reported Wednesday, citing the company’s press service.

IKEA, which employed some 15,000 people in Russia, temporarily closed its stores and suspended operations of its factories there in March amid the international fallout from Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

IKEA said it will also hold a sale of all home goods currently stocked in its Russian warehouses.
