Ukraine forces wipe out almost entire 35th Combined-Arms Russian Army in Izium - Yermak

The Armed Forces of Ukraine have destroyed almost the entire 35th Combined-Arms Army of the Russian Federation in Izium, Kharkiv region.

The head of the Ukrainian President’s Office, Andriy Yermak, broke the news on Telegram, Ukrinform reports.

"Almost the entire 35th All-Russian Army was destroyed in Izium," he said.

A Russian milblogger published a lengthy message on June 3 claiming that nearly the entire 35th Combined Arms Army has been destroyed in Izyum due to incompetent Russian commanders.

A Russian milblogger under the pseudonym Boytsovyi Kot Murz said that Russian commanders did not account for combat challenges in the Izyum woods, leading to significant losses in the 64th and 38th Separate Guard Motor Rifle Brigades, which he reported now have less than 100 servicemen in total.

Boytsovyi Kot Murz claimed that Russian commanders failed to provide necessary equipment to units fighting in wooded terrain and did not repair Russian heavy artillery in a timely manner.

Russian forces also reportedly lacked effective communication with command centers and relied on messengers due to the shortage of encrypted phones.

Boytsovyi Kot Murz noted that the lack of communications between Russian units and commanders allowed Ukrainian forces to strike Russian advanced positions with drones.

Russian private military company servicemen from Wagner also refused to participate in combat, leading to a significant lack of advances on the Izyum axis.

While ISW cannot independently confirm these reports, they are consistent with previous reports of Russian operations and high casualties on the Izyum axis.

Finland and Sweden joining NATO would put Russia in a difficult military position in the Baltic Sea, top U.S. General Mark Milley said on Saturday (June 4) during a visit to Stockholm ahead of a military exercise.

The two Nordic neighbours, which both have long borders on the Baltic Sea, applied last month to join the military alliance amid security concerns after Russia invaded Ukraine in February, although they face objections from Turkey.

Their joining would mean the Baltic Sea's coastline would, bar short strips around Russian cities Kaliningrad and St Petersburg, be encircled by NATO members.

"So from a Russian perspective that will be very problematic for them, militarily speaking, and it would be very advantageous to NATO," said Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

"The Baltic (Sea is) very strategically important, it's one of the great seaways of the world," Milley added.

Ukraine war: Another Russian general killed by Ukrainian forces - reports

Russian state media has confirmed the death of one of Moscow's top generals during heavy fighting in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region.

Maj Gen Roman Kutuzov was killed leading an assault on a Ukrainian settlement in the region, a reporter with the state-owned Rossiya 1 said.

Alexander Sladkov said Gen Kutuzov had been commanding troops from the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic.

Russia's defence ministry has not commented on the reports.

"The general had led soldiers into attack, as if there are not enough colonels," Mr Sladkov wrote on the Telegram social media app. "On the other hand, Roman was the same commander as everyone else, albeit a higher rank."

Ukraine's military also confirmed the killing of Gen Kutuzov, without offering further details about the circumstances.

His death comes as rumours circulated on social media that a second senior officer, Lt Gen Roman Berdnikov, commander of the 29th Army, was also killed in fighting over the weekend. The BBC cannot independently verify the claims.

Russian commanders have been increasingly forced to the front in an attempt to drive forward the invasion and Moscow has confirmed the deaths of three senior generals.

Kyiv claims to have killed 12 generals and Western intelligence officials say at least seven senior commanders have been killed.

Russian FSB admits losing information war - disinfo watchdog

Russia's Federal Security Service acknowledges in its documents that Kremlin propaganda has insufficient influence on the population and is losing the information war.

That’s according to the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Ukrinform reports.

The Center says Russia's special services have developed an action plan to properly "zombify" the population in the occupied territories, which eventually failed.

The plan called for the use of the image of "polite people," as applied in 2014 (circulating videos, photos of rescued animals, photos of veterans crying from happiness of reunification, videos of joint actions of Russian and "the right kind” of Ukrainian soldiers against Ukrainian "Nazis" and “Banderites," as well as videos of soldiers bringing peace to people in the form of new textbooks for schools, as well as medical equipment, etc.

Numerous appeals by Ukrainian and Russian veterans to stop Nazism in Ukraine and prevent it in Russia and around the world were also supposed to be used.

The plan also included engaging with those who, due to the specifics of their jobs, are in contact with large groups of people – teachers, taxi drivers, service workers, and others.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, referring to the Minister of Culture and Information Policy, Oleksandr Tkachenko, more than 200,000 “cyber troops” in Ukraine are helping the country promote Ukrainian narratives and fight Russian disinformation.

Sweden to provide Ukraine with AG 90 anti-materiel sniper rifles, AT4 anti-tank weapons

Sweden will provide Ukraine with AG 90 anti-materiel sniper rifles and ammunition, and an additional 5,000 Swedish AT4 recoilless anti-tank weapons.

That’s according to Army Recognition, Ukrinform reports.

“The Government proposes that Sweden donate additional defense material to Ukraine in the form of the RBS 17 anti-ship missile system, AG 90 anti-materiel sniper rifles and ammunition, and an additional 5 000 Swedish AT4 recoilless anti-tank weapons,” the defense ministry’s statement reads.

Sweden also intends to contribute SEK 60 million to the fund set up by NATO intended to support the Ukrainian armed forces.

Earlier this spring, Sweden donated around EUR48 million to the National Bank of Ukraine’s special fundraising account to support the country’s armed forces.

The Government now proposes that Sweden make an additional financial contribution of EUR55 million to the fund.

In terms of weapons, since the beginning of the war, Sweden has already delivered 10,000 AT4 anti-tank weapons.

The AT4 is a series of 84 mm unguided rocket, man-portable, single-shot, disposable, recoilless smoothbore anti-tank weapons manufactured by the Swedish company Saab Bofors Dynamics.

The AT4 can be operated by a single soldier and depending on the rocket model, it has a firing from 200 to 600 m and can penetrate armor up to 460 mm.

The AG 90 is the Swedish designation of the American Barrett M82 12.7mm anti-materiel sniper rifle.

The maximum effective range is around 1.8 km.

Lavrov cancels flight to Serbia after countries close airspace, Interfax reports

LONDON, June 5 (Reuters) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's visit to Serbia has been cancelled after countries around Serbia closed their airspace to his aircraft, a senior foreign ministry source told the Interfax news agency on Sunday.

The source confirmed a Serbian media report that said Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Montenegro had closed their airspace to the plane that would have carried Moscow's top diplomat to Belgrade on Monday.

"Our diplomacy has yet to master teleportation," the source said.

There was no immediate comment from the Russian foreign ministry.

After Russian threat, U.K. says it will send Ukraine rocket launchers

Britain on Monday said it will send Ukraine multiple-launch rocket systems that can strike targets up to 50 miles away as Ukrainian forces seek to fend off Russian attacks in the country’s east, which followed a vague threat from Russian President Vladimir Putin about long-range weapons.

The rocket systems “will enable our Ukrainian friends to better protect themselves against the brutal use of long-range artillery which Putin’s forces have used indiscriminately to flatten cities,” British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said in a statement, according to Reuters.

The BBC reported that the pending shipment of three such systems was coordinated with the United States, which last week announced that it will send advanced rocket systems with a range of about 45 miles.

In a televised interview this weekend, Putin threatened to order wider attacks in Ukraine if the West sends long-range weapons, though he did not elaborate further.

The United States previously chose not to send Ukraine specialized rocket systems that have a range of up to 186 miles.

UK Outraged After 2 British 'Mercenaries' Handed Death Sentences By Pro-Russian Donetsk Court

Initially reports suggested that a pair of captured British foreign fighters in Russian military custody faced 20 years in jail, but the final ruling in what Western observers have condemned as a "show trial" has ended up shockingly worse. On Thursday 28-year old Aiden Aslin and 48-year old Shaun Pinner have been sentenced to death by a court in the pro-Russian breakaway republic of Donetsk.

The British nationals had been serving in the Ukrainian military, but were captured in April while fighting in now Russian-conquered Mariupol. They appeared in a Donetsk court this week on charges of "terrorism" and "being a mercenary". On Wednesday Russian state RIA Novosti aired footage of the men pleading "guilty" to the crimes, which critics say was coerced. A captured Moroccan national fighting for the Ukrainians, Saaudun Brahim, was also sentenced to death in the same proceedings.
