Russia says it has completed Kherson withdrawal says Russian Minister

3.52M subscribers

Russia's defence ministry said on Friday (November 11) it had completed the withdrawal of troops from the western bank of the Dnipro river in Ukraine's southern Kherson region.

In its daily briefing, the ministry said all Russian forces and equipment had been transferred to the left, or eastern, bank of the Dnipro.

It said the withdrawal was completed by 0500 Moscow time (0200 GMT) on Friday morning.

"The transfer of Russian troop units to the left bank of the Dnipro river has been completed," the defence ministry said in a statement.

"Not a single unit of military equipment or weapons have been left on the right (western) bank.

All Russian servicemen crossed to the left bank," it added, saying that Russia had not suffered any loss of personnel or equipment during the withdrawal.

Reuters could not independently verify those details.

Pro-Russian bloggers had reported late on Thursday that Russian forces crossing the river were coming under heavy fire from Ukrainian forces.

The ministry said Ukrainian forces had struck Dnipro River crossings five times overnight with U.S.-supplied HIMARS rocket systems.

Russia ordered the withdrawal on Wednesday, saying it had concluded that attempts to maintain its position and supply troops, including in the regional capital Kherson, were "futile" in the face of a mounting Ukrainian counteroffensive.

The speed of the withdrawal was faster than Ukraine and the United States had said they expected.

Video appears to show Russians abandoned positions across river from Kherson

KHERSON, Ukraine, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Images on Tuesday appeared to show Russian troops had quit a town in southern Ukraine on the far bank of the Dnipro River from Kherson, the city they surrendered last week, suggesting one of the biggest retreats of the war may not have ended at the river's edge.

Russia had said it was pulling its forces across the wide Dnipro River to more easily defended positions on the opposite bank.

But images posted on the internet on Tuesday appeared to show the retreat may not have stopped at the river's edge.

In video filmed in the town of Oleshky, on the opposite side of the Dnipro from Kherson across a collapsed bridge, there was no sign of any Russian presence.

A driver raced down the deserted main road for miles at high speed without encountering a single Russian checkpoint or flag.

Several bunkers set up along the road appeared to have been abandoned.

The location of the video was confirmed by Reuters based on visible landmarks.

Moscow said last week it was pulling its troops across the Dnipro to better defend positions on the east bank in Kherson province, which controls access to Crimea, the strategic Black Sea peninsula Russia seized in 2014.

Strikes put Ukraine in darkness; missiles cross into Poland

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia pounded Ukraine’s energy facilities Tuesday with its biggest barrage of missiles yet, striking targets across the country and causing widespread blackouts, and a U.S. official said missiles crossed into NATO member Poland, where two people were killed.

Polish government spokesman Piotr Mueller did not immediately confirm the information from a senior U.S. intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the situation.

But Mueller said top leaders were holding an emergency meeting due to a “crisis situation.”

Polish media reported that two people died Tuesday afternoon after a projectile struck an area where grain was drying in Przewodów, a Polish village near the border with Ukraine.

Poland explosion was Ukraine defending itself against Russia, says NATO

BRUSSELS — NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Wednesday that the explosions in Poland that claimed two lives were probably caused by a Ukrainian missile defending against Russian strikes.

The remark, made following a meeting of NATO ambassadors in Brussels, came after Western leaders urged calm and tried to curtail speculation about the risk of direct hostilities between Russia and NATO.

Stoltenberg said the incident is still being investigated but the blast was most likely due to a Ukrainian antiaircraft missile defending against a Russian cruise missile.

Still, he stressed, Russia is to blame.

“This is not Ukraine’s fault, Russia bears the ultimate responsibility,” he said at a news conference at the alliance’s Brussels headquarters.

A full picture of the incident, which occurred in the Polish village of Przewodow, about five miles from the Ukrainian border, is still emerging.

Poland said that the Russian-manufactured missile hit the village at 3:40 p.m. local time Tuesday, killing two Polish citizens.

But officials have said little else.

Two of Vladimir Putin's Tu-95 nuke bombers were reportedly blown up in a suspected Ukrainian drone attack at a high-security Russian airbase.
Shocking footage showed a huge flash at the Engels airbase in the Saratov region of Russia after the apparent early morning strike.

Two Tu-95s - known as Bears - were reportedly destroyed in the explosion.
The bombers have been used to blast targets in Ukraine with non-nuclear weapons, particularly in recent weeks as Putin continues to blitz the country's infrastructure.

Two Russian troops were injured and rushed to hospital after the suspected Ukrainian strike, Visegrád 24 reports.
Traffic was said to be at a standstill near the airfield on Monday as emergency services responded to the attack.

Ukraine appears to expose Russian air defence gaps with long-range strikes

  • Three killed at Russian base just hours from Moscow
  • One of bases hit was home to Russian bomber fleet

KYIV/NOVOSOFIIVKA, Ukraine, Dec 6 (Reuters) - A third Russian airfield was set ablaze on Tuesday by a drone strike, a day after Ukraine demonstrated an apparent new ability to penetrate hundreds of kilometres into Russian air space with attacks on two bases.

Officials in the Russian city of Kursk, around 90 km (60 miles) north of the Ukraine border, released pictures of black smoke above an airfield in Tuesday's early hours after the latest strike. The governor said an oil storage tank had gone up in flames, but there were no casualties.

On Monday, Russia said it had been hit hundreds of kilometres from Ukraine by what it said were Soviet-era drones - at Engels air base, home to Russia's strategic bomber fleet, and in Ryazan, a few hours' drive from Moscow.

Ukraine did not directly claim responsibility for the strikes, but nonetheless celebrated them.

In Washington, U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price said on Tuesday, "We are not enabling Ukraine to strike beyond its borders. We are not encouraging Ukraine to strike beyond its borders."

The New York Times, citing a senior Ukrainian official, said the drones involved in Monday's attacks were launched from Ukrainian territory, and at least one of the strikes was carried out with the help of special forces close to the base.

Ukraine strikes another Russian air base, showing vulnerability of defenses

RIGA, Latvia — A drone strike attributed to Ukraine rocked an airfield inside Russia on Tuesday, demonstrating once again Ukraine’s ability to reach into Russian territory one day after its forces struck two other air bases hundreds of miles inside Russia.

The two airfields struck by drones on Monday — the Engels-2 base in the Saratov region and the Dyagilevo base in Ryazan, a few hours’ drive from Moscow — are home to jet bombers that can carry conventional missiles used to target Ukrainian infrastructure but can also carry nuclear weapons and normally serve as an important component of Russia’s strategic nuclear deterrent.

Drone strikes Russian Kursk airfield sparking huge oil tank fire bordering Ukraine

A drone has attacked an airfield in Russia's Kursk region bordering Ukraine a day after Moscow blamed Ukraine for drone strikes at two other Russian airfields.
"As a result of a drone attack in the area of the Kursk airfield, an oil storage tank caught fire. There were no casualties," local governor Roman Starovoyt said, adding that they were trying to contain the fire.

Mr Starovoyt did not specify where the drone originated.
The attack follows what Russia's defence ministry said were Ukrainian attempts to strike the Dyagilevo airfield in the Ryazan region and the Engels airfield in the Saratov region on Monday with "Soviet-made drones".
The drones were intercepted but debris fell and exploded on the airfields, the ministry added.
