'Monster for Dummies' advice...?

@Marty Backe 'Ben Hurred' requires further explanation! Please tell me this did not happen up on BrokeBacke Mountain. :P

Actually, it did. @jrkline came upon me in my blindspot. The Monster will always win this encounter :D

Here are the pictures of the aftermath

EUC blood brothers!  Just noticed the diamond plate pedals on @jrkline's ACM.  Was there a how to on that modification?  And the digital readout under the handle, pretty cool mod.

Definitely with full protective gear! BTW how are you feeling? I'm sorry if I missed any follow up you may have posted regarding your trip to the ortho clinic.

I'm hurting a lot if not resting in just the right positions but I wanted to get out today & enjoy some of the nice weather. Not sure if I've cracked a rib or damaged muscle but I can't sit up/move using my left arm for chest pain or right arm for various damage to that.

I see the fracture clinic Monday morning for my arm/elbow. I'm not sure what/if they'll advise about work. I'm not looking forward to getting a bus with the various areas of pain & even sitting at a desk desk will be uncomfortable.

I have a few things I'm looking at on Amazon which use the D30 stuff. Soft & flexible normally but tough on impact. Ian used it for his 1000 miler & says it definitely helped him when his Monster cut out. I've plenty of time to decide as I won't be riding for a few weeks at least.

OMG that is a long time to wait before seeing a specialist! Sorry man! I don't want to sound disparaging about your country's health care system but you should not have to endure that kind of pain for 2 weeks! Hopefully the clinic will provide some much needed answers on Monday! Best wishes!

It's a week not 2, I had the accident on Tuesday of this week.

Our NHS is stretched to the limits & beyond. It doesn't help when our population keeps rising & they keep shutting A&E's & hospitals.

If I could afford it there's private health care where I would have been seen & sorted by now. I will look into it for my family soon and see if I can find funds as for my spine problems & times like this it would be great.

My company offers healthcare... Only I'm not on the right level to receive it. It sucks because I know & do more than some others that are. I can't push for it either as they are planning another wave of the redundancy bat!

Sorry about my time frame! Yes our country has different tiers of insurance. Interestingly many of my patients are on state sponsored Medicaid. Most practitioners hate the insurance but it is not the child's fault their parents are financially struggling. Also Medicaid provides me with authorization in 1 day compared to other insurance companies that can take up to 2 weeks. Totally unacceptable!

Apart from the wheel, the road/traffc condition is also the most important factor to put the rider into danger.

I would say that the Monster is heavy and relatively short-pedaled (pedal length divided by the wheel diameter, which determines the max deceleration), therefore is difficult to brake and difficult to turn. Plus, bigger wheel makes the rider feel less fast.

Therefore my advice is, slow down for anything that is not very clear ahead of you.

This is great, thanks. I've heard the Monster described as difficult to turn, but your explanation makes perfect sense why.

I took my Monster out on the road for the first time yesterday. After riding it for a while, I switched back to my KS14C for comparison. Lots of differences, of course, but the strangest thing was that after being on the Monster, the 14C felt so soft and washy. It's been on the same riding mode (middle hardness) for over a year and never bothered me, but it became so noticeable and unpleasant that I promptly switched it to the highest hardness setting. The Monster is on the softest mode for learning purposes.

I was just going to attribute it to the greater weight of the Monster, but this makes more sense; my leverage on the Monster is so much less that it naturally feels much harder. So less braking power plus added momentum will make for longer stopping distances. This is great advice; I will follow it!

The connector issue is a thing of the past.

The wire melting issue seems much less likely to appear on a Monster.  @Marty Backe's ACM died while the Monster riding with him simply did an overheat warning and is ok (thread). [@Sven did you check for possible heat damage inside?]

So I would not worry about that unless you're very heavy (over 100kg or even more) and do long, steep hills. You can open the side panel and check the wiring looks good once a month or so, if it calms you.

Not a bad idea, probably worth doing!

I remember seeing that video. This generation of GWs all use the same gauge of motor wire though, is that right (or am I misremembering... I really need to start taking more notes while I read these threads)? So is the difference the Monster's internal fan? Do all the GWs have that? Or is the Monster's motor slightly more efficient and produce less heat?

Of all the Gotway wheels that I've ridden, the Gotway is super soft. As much as I try I just can't ride it that comfortably. I have to stick with firm, which isn't all that firm.

We need body mounted air-bags, where is the technology when you really need it?

After some of the spectacularly self-damaging Monster crashes we've heard about, I'm wondering if this shouldn't go for the Monster itself. If it works for NASA...??

Congrats on the new wheel! First one? Or been riding a while and just new to the forum (welcome!)?

Newburyport is my favorite town on the North Shore. Haven't taken a EUC up there yet though... definitely something to put on the list!

Ugh... hope things start looking up and coming together for a speedy recovery.

I had a frustrating thought about our own health care system recently. My last two crashes both sent me to a local urgent care clinic in my town. It's brand new and beautiful, but it has no good reason to exist. It's a small town, and this is the second such clinic that's opened; there are also similar clinics in the small towns to the east and west, and a good-sized hospital system in the city to the north. The two times I visited the clinic, I was either the only patient waiting or one of two. The paperwork still takes forever the first time, but after that I was waited on hand and foot by nurses and radiology techs, and had the longest one-on-one conversations with a physician in my life. Not because I was special or critical or anything, but just because they had nothing else to do.

It benefits me personally, but I found it to be so ridiculous. There are vast areas of our country, mostly rural, that are essentially health care "deserts" where people suffer for years with untreated health problems because they have no access to medical care, dentistry, mental health, even optometry. Meanwhile my area has more health care capacity than it can possibly use. It's about money, of course. In my area, the population is relatively healthy and most have private health insurance, so it's seen as an easy money market. The places where the need is desperate are relatively poor and private insurance is rare.

Lots of flaws in both our system and yours, but I feel at least yours has its heart in the right place. Anyway, sorry for the digression.

First world problems where we complain about service that is too good.

Hey @OblyI first got an Airwheel X3 a few months ago and have been loving it once I got the hang it... It took a couple of weekends to figure it out but once I got the hang of it... I have been loving it! It was a process learning though. I have rolled along the pavement a number of times with this wheel!! I think I have more bumps and bruises than this thing but it actually takes a beating better than me... I took a nasty fall and banged my head and shoulder on the side walk looking ahead instead of down... The shoulder actually hurt worse but I was dizzy for a while. Nobody uses these around here and I seem to be the only one for now. I expect that will change...:) My V3s+ is sitting at UPS right now waiting and I can't wait to give it a go and see how that bigger wheel feels on some of these bumps... New to this forum and wish I discovered it earlier but I've been busy and I hope to see you out there sometime!! I'm actually in Merrimac but I catch the train in Newburyport to Beverly... Hope to see you out there and good luck with the new ride!!!

Make sure you are safe. Helmet, wrist-guards, knee-pads, elbow-pads... Better feel like a dork than discover the frailty of the human body :D

Thanks! Good to hear.

Wondering if it will always do the overheat warning before any cable damage occurs. But nice that the Monster did the exact same thing as the ACM that died and has no damage!

Though I'm surprised, the wheels usually are quite tight. So there should be no dust in there. But maybe the Monster is more open than my for-reference ACM?

I was surprised to see dust inside too.

But I'm just glad that's all I need to worry about :) i guess After all, it's not airtight and will collect some dust if you ride on trails alot

Thanks @KingSong69 ... It is a big step but one I'm looking forward too... I was just going to use my bike helmet (pictured) and my pads and wrist guard from my inline skating days... I'm a windsurfer at heart and used to falling in water but I've been whacked by a mast and boom a few times too... I might have to get some bubble wrap too I suppose... B)

  • 3 weeks later...

I ride my monster hard and fast 99% of the time. I use it for hills Up & Down and almost always dirt. If i ride on the street i only use the road and i ride at 25mph most of the time with burst speeds up to 31mph. That is not the top speed at all. The sound warning is not hitting for me at 31, so i think that it may have more to give. I live is south orange county and ride almost every day. The monster will hit the over heat warning very fast if you ride up and down steep dirt hills for any given time, but will cool down fast so your not waiting long. Here are 2 of my last rides from the past 2 days. If anyone is in the area and would like to ride let me know.

Ride to live!

After installing 3" louver on both sides. My monster doesn't overheat (hardly). Max temp recorded was 57 after 1 mile long 17% incline

If you live in area where you rarely get rain or know how to maneuver around puddle, this mod maybe for you.

Sadly, my monster's out of commission because of worn shims but...yeah can't wait to ride again ;)
