Mortal Coil
I know. I’m fantasising. But imagine a world where EVERYONE owns and uses an EUC. Like cars in our world today. What would our cities and towns look like? What would daily life be like? Discuss. Indulge me. No “this would never happen for reasons XY and Z”. Put yourself into this fantasy world and imagine...
LanghamP
Had to use or had the option to use? There's somewhat of an arms race dating back over a hundred years for ever larger vehicle sizes, of which today the average and median vehicle size is the biggest it has ever been. Starting in the 1950's, the Federal government specified fast and wide roads for suburbs or else they didn't get subsidized housing loans. This policy is still in effect. A lot of Western European cities have banned cars entirely from the city centers (Barcelona, Brussels off the top of my head), and so we need only to look at them to see a world with just EUCs. I'd guess way less parking, way less pollution, and something that looks like the city center of Leipzig.

Popular Post meepmeepmayer
There would be a lot of super smooth and very obstacle-free "bike" paths everywhere. Causing an obstacle on these (trash, ...) would be a serious crime that everyone frowns upon.

Mortal Coil
People learn to ride at 5 or 6, and are far more skilled than anyone here. People prefer to ride to the extent that there are public health campaigns trying to convince people to “get off and walk” People even ride inside public places like shopping centres and Supermarkets. Supermarkets have trolleys with large wheels that can be pushed at 40kmh and for a deposit you can push them home!
Popular Post alcatraz
They'd be allowed in malls/train stations. There'd be euc cops. Stairs would have a flat incline section for riding. There'd be indoor riding lanes. Edited January 26, 2020 by alcatraz
Popular Post atdlzpae
It would be a horrible dystopia with total government control and overbearing police. Imagine a world where you have to ride at least 1km every day (verified via a GPS), or your house gets raided by police... You said EVERYONE which implies a government mandate to own and use one or to suffer in some legally imposed way. Also, babies would be !@#$%^. I imagine a special EUC stroller that allows a baby to safely travel this one km. Or elderly... Blind people would also have a huge problem with this ridiculous government mandate. And let's not even start with quadriplegics... Well, you said EVERYONE. EVERYONE is EVERYONE. Edited January 27, 2020 by atdlzpae
mike_bike_kite
Jonathon and Ian captured what life would be like if you were totally reliant on an EUC in this episode of wheel life where they pick up a flatpacked bookcase from Ikea. I was particularly impressed by the wine glasses.
Popular Post Biped Phil
Parking lots for automobiles would be returned to pasture for sheep and toads. Paths and roads would be paved with forgiving cork or rubber. School and work would be called off when high wind was forecast. All clothing would be padded. Sale of bottled drinks at the grocery would decline. The stuff is too heavy to carry. Corridor floors would be textured, so you could spill a Coke without causing a 100-vehicle pile-up.
Old Glider
Amazon et al would deliver by way of carts propelled by dual Gotway Monsters. Hopefully not with Gotway designed autonomy though!
Popular Post yoric
Funny topic. I'm glad I'm not the only one fantasying about everyone on earth having an EUC At first, it may looks like a dream, but what about traffic jam in EUC? Having watched Youtube videos with more than 30 EUC at the same place, it doesn't look appealing to me. EUC is very cool when you have space, it's freedom at its best. But imagine following each other in a straight line like wagons: no freedom to go your speed, to accelerate or pause without impacting your peers. In a way we're lucky to belong to this emerging "EUC era", because we're still marginal enough to enjoy not so crowded lanes, and pedestrian spots. We also don't have lots of overwhelming laws. Wait, it's coming (speed limitation, insurance, special equipment, driving licence?) What about automatic EUC renting station, like they do with bicycle ? You could ride from station to station for a very cheep fee, and the EUC get charged automatically when putting it down to a station. In an ideal world, cities would ban individual car. There would be only public transportation (buses, tramway, metro) and gaz free individual transportation devices (bicycle, e-scooter, e-unicycle...) Lanes would be split by speed range (0-5 mph, 5-10 mph, 10-20 mph, 20-30 mph...) We're still in the prehistoric time of the EUC era. it's only 10 years old! They will become more secure, batteries will perform 10x the range they do today with lighter weight. More EUC models will be developed for younger / older population. The Paris mayor plans to ban all cars within a decade, and she has the support of most Parisians. This will be interesting how it turns out, as drivers are the most vicious of all people when they see their road usage and free parking eliminated. The current mayor (Anne Hidalgo) is well known to be pro cyclist and against car (to simplify), but not up to the point of totally forbidding cars. Her program for the incoming election is to limit further the access to the very center of Paris only to local cars, taxis, emergency vehicules and public transports. As of today she is the front runner despite being controversial (due to her transport policy and financial management). Fun fact: one of her main opponent just fall because of a sex video scandal.
