Suggestions on a helmet

Michael Anthony

Recommended Posts

I should receive delivery of my new EU in a couple of weeks from China... fingers crossed. I want to get a helmet and some protective gear. Any suggestions? I I already have a bike helmet but really not too fond of it. I was thinking of a skate helmet instead. Any feedback would be apprecitated. Links to the actual helmet would be great as well.

Thanks,

Michael

I wear this one which doesn't look as totally dorky as the bicycle helmets with the chin straps. .

It would probably fall off in a serious fall, but then again I try to avoid serious falls.  If a softball hit you in the head, however, you would be good to go.

That one is nice. I personally own two skateboard helmets (for color variety) as they make a lot of sense for unicycles, as euc falls are more like skateboard falls than bucycle falls. Plus skateboard helmets look cools, whereas bicycle helmets are dorky. B)

I should post questions like that.  Just got back from Wal-Mart.  The one I picked up looks like SirGeraints. $24. If I was in a crazier mood, they had ninja turtle, Spider-Man and Minions as well.  I am getting better but that also means I'm pushing more.  2 bloody elbows, bruised rib and real sore bumm.  Decided today to cover the other end.  Pads are do in soon.

I use these wrist protectors:

with bicycle gloves over them.

I have used a motorcycle helmet, a bike helmet, and a snowboard helmet like this one:

http://www.backcountry.com/giro-combyn-helmet

The snowboard helmet is great for cold weather because of the removable ear pads, and the strap to keep goggles on.

It is nice to wear boots, thick socks, and long pants.

I don't wear elbow or knee pads, but many recommend them.

@esaj that gear looks like great protection that would even give you an edge for high speed dismount or EU vs. Car. Plus with the cold that helmet seems like a toasty head home.

I forgot to add, when I was first learning I wore leather to help me keep my skin, and lots of people have advised using shin guards (like soccer/futbol) players but turn them inward against the wheel to save you the inner calf bruises of a beginner.

Wow. So much to think about. A lot of great suggestions so far. The full face helmet that Esaj suggested looks great during the Winter although it might be tough during the Summers here in NYC. I think I'm leaning towards a Triple 8 helmet like SirGeraint suggested. I'm looking at maybe the Gotham model or even the Gotham Snow version like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Triple-Eight-Gotham-Helmet-Medium/dp/B00MUH8X5U/ref=sr_1_14?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1444580785&sr=1-14&keywords=Triple+8+helmet+gotham

I'm hoping it's basically the same as a regular Gotham helmet with removable ear pads, which would be nice during the Winter. I like the snow version Giro helmet that Villac suggested as well.

I will definitely get some knee and elbow protectors but not sure how long I will use them.

Absolutely have to get some wrist protectors and the double-sided version that Esaj suggested looks like something I should think about.

Ok, needing hard love here. Found and ordered a pad and wrist set from bang good.  It came up during a electric unicycle search.   Hard love time guys, did I wasted the little money I spent?  Or is it good enough?  Should I look to replace them even before they get here?

Cant advise on a helmet (too stupid and proud to wear one) but I bought myself these Gloves:

http://www.amazon.com/Hillbilly-Wrist-Guard-Gloves-Finger/dp/B0046EZ37Q
Very comfy, since they're made of goat-leather, but for the next summer I probably will get the same ones with half-fingers. I didnt wear the full fingers often with the weather being nice and hot...

Hard to say without knowing what you've bought.  If it was something like this:

http://www.banggood.com/6pcs-Knee-Pads-Elbow-Protection-Electric-Unicycle-Practice-Gear-Guard-Pad-p-983122.html

then the elbows and knees might be ok for very gentle impacts (skinned knees type stuff), but you really want some proper wrist guards.

Yap, those are the ones.  Really good price.  But looking at what everyone else has, I worry they might just be Cheap.  Cheap is OK if your going for a "look".  I don't care if I look like I'm wearing gear.  I want it to protect me.

Hi Jag_Rip,

Just wanted see what your experience is with the dye on these gloves. The Amazon reviews and some pics makes it look like a pretty serious issue. Maybe the company addressed it. What's your take? Also, does it seem that the one splint will protect from a wrist break? I've seen some work a front and back hand guard.

Thanks,

Michael

My answer in your PM, I guess its worth for all to read :):

Dye issue? I havent had any or read about them. I wore them several times now (not in pouring rain though, but was sweating several times in them) and did not feel they are giving off color, so either they have fixed it or I didnt wear them long enough yet or it wasnt a general problem.

I just went back to read the reviews and it indeed looks horrible on that photo! Will do a test on the weekend by soaking them in water and let you know, I want to be able to wear them during rain and still be office compatible. :) So far I cant confirm the mentioned bad quality of the velcro sewing.

I can confirm though, they have two splints each, front and back, the one on the back is hidden inside the glove. The velcro strips hold both in position.

Update of purchases:

Thank you all for your input. I thought I should do an update as to what I actually ended up getting. I finally decided on the Bern Watts HardHat skate helmet. It is NOT a bicycle helmet or really intended for that use... more for multiple impacts at lower speeds than one big impact at a high speed. It is NOT the the EPS version but rather the HardHat model. What I particularly like about it was the way it sits lower on my head. I found a lot of other helmets felt like they were sitting on top of my head. The HardHat design sits lower on the head... I believe it is actually designed slightly deeper for that reason. It definitely feels less dorky. Also the Watts style has a brim at the front that just gives a better overall look and a little bit of protection before your nose meets the cement. The price seemed reasonable ($49 but then got a 20% discount on top). It's part of their line called "All Weather"... I think that's the term. It basically has different inserts you can switch out like ear muffs for Winter, etc.

Bern Watts Summer Hard Hat, Matte Black, Large

Ah, and I also went with the Hillbilly gloves recommended by Jag_Rip. I went with the full finger version since the weather is turning colder here in NYC and I figure I can cut the finger tips off by next Sping/Summer. The reviews sound pretty good as far as wrist protection.

Now that i am wearing them daily i can say they dont insulate a lot. The top fabric lets wind through, so they arent all-weather. I try wearing a wollen glove beneath them soon if it stays that cold...
