Whats the deal with people putting Slime in their tires?

First I heard of that.  I have a kit in my car in case of emergency, and used it once on my old school minibike (it worked fixing the flat), but why on a non-flat tire?

I put Slime in to my inner tube when I got tired of refilling the tire with air every week. It cut down on the number of times I had to pump up the tire to about once every six to eight weeks. As far as the ride goes -- absolutely no difference. My inner tube has a pretty bad leak now, and I'm waiting for a replacement inner tube and tire to come on the slow boat from China, but I'm satisfied with the effectiveness of Slime. I'll probably use the rest of the bottle when I install the new inner tube.

I was convinced to use Slime by other riders that swear by it. And I finally did it when @jrkline had a flat in his ACM and fixed the flat by pumping in some Slime (no tube change, etc.).

I bought a bottle from Amazon and Slimed my KS14C, ACM, and MSuper. I put 4 ounces in the ACM and MSuper tubes and 3 ounces in the KS14C.  I did this about 3 weeks ago and noticed zero change in handling, feel, etc.

Seems like cheap insurance against a flat.

Yes, the probability to have a flat tire decreases, to my reckoning by a relevant margin, and the time intervals for pumping to keep the tire pressure in the desired range increase.

I doubt that, I haven't noticed anything.

I got a snakebite last week when I foolishly filled my tire without using a pressure gauge. The slime did not work at first but then it started to. I put had put the slime in months ago.

One week later the tire is still full and hard, like a Viagra commercial.

I started sliming due to Marty's suggestion.

Good story. I had never heard the term "snakebite" before. I looked it up - very interesting.

Its definitely good insurance yo have some slime in your tires.  Got some in my truck tires with great results.  I used to constantly get nails and subsequently flat tires.  Since using slime I rarely put air in my truck tires.  Before I had to put air in at least once a week.

Well goddamnit this morning I went for a strip mall ride (where you ride to a strip mall out in the boondocks on some flimsy pretense) and got a small screw (not nail) in the tire.

Unscrewed it, the tip was green with slime, and gosh @Marty Backe is my hero because not only did I have the slime in the tire but also the Lezyne pump, the model Marty recommended, and some painful hundred pumps later (that's what she said) I was off.

I guess I could have Ubered it, or done something, but slimeing with the tinniest pump makes me feel like a self-reliant he-man, courtesy of made in China goods and a global supply chain.

Hey, fantastic story. It's really encouraging to read about Slime working in the field. Sure gives me added confidence. Thanks man!

EDIT: I love your story telling :D

Which one is that? Can you provide a link?

Hmm, I bought this one for $50 but the price went up a lot.

Lezyne 1-MP-DPRDR-V1S04 Digital Pressure Drive Hand Pump, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JKA39YE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_PGu0zbNWXZQM0

I bought the one with integrated psi which you don't really need but the convenience of having an integrated pump and psi gauge.

This one looks more promising.

INTEY Portable Bike Pump with Gauge 210 PSI High Pressure Bike Tire Pump Fit Presta & Schrader Valve https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074H7HHQZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_tPu0zbYQR9WJW

This electric pumps looks promising too.

Since we're on the subject, here's the stuff I carry on every ride.  Except for the mini-pump, it all fits into a quart-sized ziploc bag.  I like manual pumps over CO2 and electric types just for reliability.

  1. mini bike pump
  2. electrical splitter (allows two wheels to charge on one power outlet)
  3. tire gauge  (0-50 psi
  4. brass valve extension
  5. spare fuses for quick-charger
  6. spare tire valves
  7. valve stem tool

Plus, of course, a sealant like  Slime in the tires!  This kit covers all my basic on-the-road needs.  For anything worse than a flat tire, there's the cell phone.

These are great tools to keep available on the road.

I did buy a power splitter immediately.

You really shouldn't have said that

The slime so far has kept my wheel inflated to 43 psi over the past week. Impressive. And I've been easily doing 15 miles per day, every day.

I'm counting five punctures (2 snakebites, 1 screw) so far on this one tire in the KS16, and two punctures (1 snakebite) on my Inmotion V5F.

1 snakebite = 2 punctures.

My impression is that the Slime is a permanent fix.

You sure have had your fair share of tire problems. Maybe you're due for break from punctures for awhile :clap3:
