MCM5 V2 knobby options?

Scottie888

Hey guys, I just ordered the MCM5 V2 for use a my primary winter wheel. Being that, a knobby would seem more ideal than the standard road tire. Anyone has done such & have experience with knobbies that will fit?

Would this fit?- https://www.amazon.ca/Wingsmoto-2-50x10-Knobby-2-5-10-SDG107/dp/B07JMSQ6SM/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=motorcycle+tire+250+-+10+10x2.5&qid=1608332206&sr=8-6

Thanks

  • Scottie888 changed the title to MCM5 V2 knobby options?

I'd say it would work but I have no experience with it, I looked at the clearance between my tire and shell on my V2 and it looks to be around 3-4mm on each side, the side knobs don't stick out much on the one you picked out so that will help, plus with that generous lug spacing, it should do a good job at self cleaning, wish I had experience with it, it looks like a good candidate.

No clue, but you might wanna investigate real tires, not cheap Chinese ones, considering there are a bunch of legit options at that size. Plus, BikeBandit will answer questions on real outer diameter; my 3" MCM5 mod required quite a bit of cutting the undershell edges with a Bridgestone HOOP measuring a true 15.5"-ish outer diameter, just about at the limit of free spin. Either way, you'll probably need to Dremel off a little under-shell, as the lower corners of the MCM5 undershell (not so much the top) tend to catch on bigger tire diameters.

Since i love the CST C-186 ("the Sherman tire") on my MSX, i did order a CST C-183A in 2.50-10 size for my newly arrived MCM5 V2. I'll mount it as soon it arrives and report.

All right! Please let us know how that goes. IIRC the Sherm knobby has decently thick rubber on the knobs so it might be good enough to screw in some studs for real ice riding.

I've seen videos with people running this tire on 16 inch wheels like the V8 in this video.

These are also available in 14inch×2.125in. https://www.bmxguru.com/products/14-x-2-125-comp-iii-all-white-bmx-tire-by-kenda

What do you guys think?? It seems cheap and might be a good fit.

@btl that's a sweet setup. I'm gonna do that on my M5. Not sure I can get the CST tires here but I'll put knobbies of some kind. I've no doubt it'll do great offroad so let us know how it handles on streets v the ori tires. Thanks bud.

I'll give the tire at least 200km before a final judgement

Any updates? Thinking about swapping over to a knobby on the mcm5v2 and making it an offroad beast but I'm not sure if I want to sacrifice a pleasant road riding experience. If you wear down the tire does the gyro effect come back?

If you're gonna slap on an offroad dirt knobby, then for sure road riding will suffer, likely very squishy loosey in the turns. Both best of both but master of none, look for dual sport like the Kenda 262 (Sherman's tire), CST C186, Shinko SR241/244 &or Duro HF307.

Unfortunately, dual sport knobbies are hard to find to fit the MCM5v2. The Wingmoto shown in the pic looks more like a dirt knob.

Put this knobby on and its feeling pretty good! Eats up the grass like it's nothing. I did thin the edges of the inside shell just a little bit.

Nice that looks great for offroad. I think the reason why you had to shave off the shell is cos it is a 2.75.

I've been hummin & hawin about this tire. Its got a tighter (to my eyes) tread pattern than the pure dirt knobs but not quite like the Kenda k262 or Duro 307 dual sports.

Definitely agree. I also shaved down the side knobs on the tire a bit and now the tire doesn't seem to be rubbing much. Turning this mcm5 into my offroading single track wheel. This tire didnt feel to bad on the pavement either. Still very agile and responsive turning.

I just put this on: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08T77TVQQ

I installed it tubeless using a mten3 valve stem, had to grind the edge of the motor to make clearance.

Had to grind the body shell pretty much exactly like this post

Handles very good off-road.  On-road, the initial turn-in is very aggressive, almost unstable.  After a coupe dozen miles I got used to it but it might be annoying on a commuter.

PS, does anyone know how to make these picture show up in the post?

Was the motor soft enough to grind with a filer by hand or did you use electrical tools? Got a link for those Mten3 valve stems?

Might eventually try this. Looks good.

You can find the valve stems on ebay or amazon by searching "m365 valve stem".  I would get a 2 pack because I tore up the first one after I had to remove it because I didn't grind the motor deep enough.

I used a dremel with 1/2in 120grit sanding drums.  Since I only removed aluminum and didn't go deep enough to hit the steel magnet ring, it only took about 10minutes of sanding.

I have about 800 miles on the tire now.  The center knobs have worn down more than the side knobs making the profile a little less round.  It is no longer super twitchy but that makes it a little harder to do sharp turns on pavement.  Off-road handling is still pretty much the same.

Against my better judgement, I bought a used mcm5v2. Don’t know why. I just couldn’t help myself. So now I’m thinking of putting a knobby on it. All the links in the thread are dead. There’s no good tear down vids. The v1 tear down vids suck !

Anyone still rockin one of these on a knobby ? Anyone ever go for a 3” wide knobby ? There’s one vid of one with a three inch tire, but I don’t think it’s a knobby.

Couldn’t find my more recent thread, so I’m re booting this one…

Bought a Kenda K760 Trackmaster II (2.50-10) knobby for my buddy’s mcm5v2. I think I like it better than the Shinko 2.50-10 m/c 33j.

Havent rode the Kenda yet, but it didn’t rub the wheel well, so didn’t have to raise the shell this time. They’re both 6ply, heavy tires.
I’ve enjoyed riding the Shinko, tho. Perfectly fine tire.
