Reflecting on my first EUC, and about 10k kilometers later

My records show the following distances:

Step n Roll : estimated 150 miles

Ninebot One E+ : 8,021 kilometers 

Gotway Monster : 1,849 kilometers

I bought a 'Step  n Roll' in late Nov 2015 and started riding it in early Dec 2015. Almost immediately I face planted on training wheels while going down a moderate incline. Probably a 'cutout'. I lodged a stone into the shell and unknowingly sent it back telling the seller that the motor was stuck. Dismounting with a power uneven step lurched the 24 inch wheel about a half foot, cracking the plastic shell. Clipping a curb with pedals sent the unresponsive machine back again for repair. I was frustrated with the fourteen inch wheel and bought a 16 inch wheel - Ninebot One E+ in June 2016. After a few rides the Ninebot started to buck and not move forward. Incomplete firmware upgrade was diagnosed and the problem never reappeared. I rode the Ninebot One E+ until last fall (2017) before riding a newly purchased Gotway Monster on Nov 1. I really like the large diameter (22 inch) wheel and wide tire. The 1600 wh battery adds a new dimension to riding by eliminating the running out of battery issue that Ninebot One E+ is known for. Breaking a shoulder while riding the Ninebot in March 2017 was regrettably memorable and a never ending lesson in pushing these self balancing vehicles too far (temperature, speed, terrain unevennesses, general skill level).

Shin swelling is no longer the serious problem it was on the Step n Roll and during the early days of Ninebot One E+ (before padding application to the shell). For me a 25 mile ride on the Monster is with few problems in fatigue, soreness or EUC riding health troubles. I still get tired of riding the Monster after twenty miles but getting off of it , sitting down and having a coffee usually restores a good feeling in the lower legs. The Ninebot One E+ on rides of 20+ miles was always a matter of tolerance of leg and knee fatigue in the rough New England sidewalk and roadway surfaces found locally. 

I like riding the Monster at night since minor terrain surprises are easily absorbed by the large wheel and wide tire.

Total: probably a good 10k km or more with one major crash in March 2017.

Note I rode to Gloucester , MA and back today. (Google map=34 miles)

Google Maps calls the ride 34 miles (54 km) but Gotway's App with Monster records 45 km.

(45/54)*100%=83%

of Google maps distance.

Generally I've noticed lower Gotway App with Monster mileages than the Google Maps mileage perhaps 85% in a good predictor of comparison.

Thank you for your call. The issue seems to be resolved. The firmware version (v1.4) which I've used since my first ride and the lock unlock icon toggle for the phone app are harmoniously in synch again.

   Your assistance in 'de-escalating' the problem is very much appreciated.

    I have about 150 rider miles on a 'generic 14' EU purchased from 'Kidsatvparts' in Houston TX, and wanted to ride a larger diameter wheel (16"), stronger motor (frost heaves in sidewalk in Salem, MA and higher capacity battery (320 Wh)/than the generic, hence the Ninebot purchase.

    Since the Ninebot issue occurred mid ride , it is possible the app was somehow triggered my phone was in my pocket otherwise it was 'uncommanded' on my part.

    Shin bruising and inflammation of the shin bone was an issue on my 14 " wheel but resolved with padding. Shin bruising is a minor but significant issue with Ninebot to which I've purchased shin pads as a likely solution:

    Thanks for the fast return of the EU that contained a small rock wedged into the wheel shell. The rock was removed at your shop in Texas. 
 
Up until the return of the EU I had been using the training wheels. 
 
I have found both an Android Google Playstore app called:
'eunicycle'
and a web based forum at the url:

I personally have ridden the 'step n roll' EU with training wheels at best for several miles, one half mile at a time without dismounting. Taking off the training wheels made the task of riding my EU very similar to the experience of EU owner#2.The transition from stationary to rolling faces three challenges:
 
first:
The transfer of the stance on the EU from one foot on one pedal to one foot on each pedal.
 
second:
Making a convincing body position which causes the EU to move forward.
 
third:
Dismounting the EU after a ride without causing a torqued path of motorized movement that can occur when one foot only remains on the non perpendicular positioned EU.
 
 
One Youtube video for 'airwheel' shows a trainer demonstrating a one foot 'push off' from stationary to a rolling two footed mount, similar to mounting a skateboard. The task of leading the EU's-position-sensor into forward motion while using a one foot stance on the EU is a task which I've not yet mastered. In the interim, using a stone wall of hip height allowed me to mount the EU with both feet and attempt to move forward. The issue with my attempt is the abnormal torque signal sent to the electronics when one foot finds itself no longer upon its pedal and the other foot on the remaining pedal rotates the EU sidways while dipping forward. The result is the EU applying a burst of current to the motor while the EU is nearly turned on its side. The rotation of the wheel, which can be significant in terms of the torque required to propel a 220 pound rider, causes the EU to make a short arcing track of one or so feet until the electronics turn the spinning EU wheel off. In my case the EU torqued into a small curved path of a foot or so and impacted the stone wall (one foot to my left) with a loud bang and resultant 4 inch crack to the plastic shell along seam where the screws join the halves together. The sturdy make of the EU survived the whack as a whole but a crack in the shell resulted from the wall which it impacted.
 
The cause of the abnormal torqued path was one foot residing on the EU while the other was not, creating an out of balance but forward inclined pedal position. One correct mounting technique, short of using (training with) a staionary object, is to mount the EU with one foot and then performing a striding mount described by 'airwheel'. This maneuver requires some muscular positioning such that the mounted foot can support the riders full weight while riding the EU forward in a straight line. After pushing along with the unmounted foot the rider returns the unmounted striding foot to the EU pedal. I am sure that, like all other aspects of EU riding, the sense and strength of how to do it will become acquired.
 
Taking the 'step n roll' EU (without training wheels) to a smooth level vacant parking lot, complete with waist high concrete streetlight bases I used the concrete base to do a one handed assisted mount of the EU to a stationary mounted position with one foot on each pedal. In a hesitating (at first) lean forward I slowly launched myself along a wobbly path of motion. After a few tries, before becoming tired, I was doing a less wobbly but slow circumvention of the empty lot over a two footed mounted distance of several hundred feet. At very low speeds short radius turns were started. Once again, the dismount can lead to an awkward torque inducing twist of the EU as one foot only resides on a pedal pushed to the ground. The nylon belt was very useful in not allowing the dismounted EU to get away and fall over.
 
I look forward to using a more 'one footed skateboard' type of mount where one foot on the motorized EU supports the riders weight while the other foot strides along and then mounts the vacant second pedal. My shins, which turned off color during fifteen minutes of attempting to ride the EU without training wheels, look forward to the extra padding that foam tape (from eBay) applied to the shell will provide. I think my skill as a rider, without traing wheels,  from a staionary support will improve but my gut feeling about a two footed mount (stationary) or the rolling one footed mount is that it will take some time to learn or adapt a stance with the EU below me.

First try:
 
12-2_15 (Wednesday night):
A_Wet asphault...shoes slip off pedals
B_face plant  to asphalt going fast
C_left wrist-palm bruise and abrasion, right palm bruise, left knee bruise
D_ankle bone tenderness from grip stance
E_roller blading wrist and knee pads would have helped
F_helmet a good idea going fast
 
Thoughts:
Dual tire would have been better, long distance not very interesting to attempt. Training wheels helpful but turning practice needed. Battery recharge took 120 minutes
 
 
Second try:
12-4_15 at night
No crashes. 110 minutes recharge time. Leg strength improving but desire to cruise downhill is missing. Confidence in longer rides might help. Made GPS track of over 1000 ft in length. Ambulance passenger seat occupant did not look happy when he looked at me.
 
Third try:
12_6_2015 @9:30 pm
No crashes. Used lot behind Bertini's and CVS. Rounded Bertini's twice without falling off. Big left hand turns. Trouble making right hand turns. Stopped after training wheel loosened up. 105 minutes to recharge battery afterward. Distance unknown but probably several thousand feet.
 
Fourth day:
12-7_15 8:00 pm at night to 9:00 pm

2.3 + miles along the SSU part of the rail trail. Ended with a left handed chest to the trail surface. Developed good directional control while up and made longer runs without stopping. Pedestrians look wary. Left thigh tense and lower legs shaky when tired. Trying to slow down and recover directional control helps but needs to be done carefully . Left wrist took another hit but was wearing gloves. Made an Android GPS track of the ride.

Damp surface conditions
Ten minutes - no training wheels
Unable to mount without a hand assist support at right hand. Left foot on device but wet conditions create a slip off result. Mounted briely, stationary and with waist high hand support. Mounting tension from left leg-calf against side of device not attainable. Dry weather a must for next try. Did not recharge unit.

Very unsteady. 50 feet without touching wall as best ride, wobbly though. Faster speed might improve wobbly ride characteristic . Unable to mount vehicle without hand placed on wall. Cracked shell in wall impact.
Recharge time was about 15 minutes.

At SSU parking lot near main campus. Several hundred feet per ride. A little unstable but controllable. Leg fatigue after rides. Short radius turns at very low speed. Unable to confidently mount without hand assist support from concrete light base. Several awkward twisting vehicle dismounts . Sore shins. No major falls or crashes.
Recharge time was ?

Ordered spongey tape to protect shell from damage when dropped as well as to protect shins which contact the EU in an abrasive way causing black and blue skin.

f- last route passes through the college campus of my former spouse, who decades ago , called the shots 

g- the route goes in the opposite direction of a state cop who virtually drove to and blocked my path in Revere as I was passing through a Mall parking lot while headed for coffee a block away on the sidewalk section

h- the return route from Gloucester on EUC rather than MBTA rail comes a day after an MBTA asked 'what is it, what stop are you getting off, I want to 'watch you ride it'

i- riding and posting gives 'Meep' a higher purpose

j- riding Monster at speed limited 24 kph reinforces the notion that high speed EUC riding is fundamentally unwise

k- I'd rather ride 25 miles than attempt to ride an EUC backwards

l- visually working through the mechanics of following an EUC path are more rewarding ( gets me somewhere) to me than visually working through hours of DNA sequence analysis (static monitor display) for someone who ultimately terminated the job and declared while announcing a $95+k salary (2005) that 'we all have to go through this (job relocation) from time to time in our lives'. 

j- riding provides an outlet from considering gift funding in response to multiple fiscal fund drives (by mail) when the institution requesting gifts is a physical address of a former employer and the site of received 2017 broken shoulder first aid and a meal the next morning

k- not riding past the casino project in the Boston area reduces the psychology of a fist sized rock landing feet away from me ,a bunch of construction workers and a passing bus or truck near the roughed up asphalt

l- riding upright on the Monster defeats the Monster seat idea

Arthritis in left knee??  Maybe more!?

Just rode a 25 mile route to Boston at night. On the train back now. A few more Monster km to reach 2,000 km. Sort of an arbitrary goal I guess.

In the 1970s I dated a Catholic woman who was a graduate student as well. She had a four year old daughter and was going it alone as they say. She graduated, I didn't. Towards the end of the relationship she said 'I have a few pokes in the fire'. Now that's a dry sense of humor. With social media being what it is the four year old daughter is now a Georgetown Univ. graduate, married and the mother of several.
