Popular Post gena
This is my personal review of the msx and 18xl. This is from a perspective of someone not into the technical stuff, just a lazy "entitled" user. I posted a review of the 16s a few months ( years ? time flies ... ) ago, I was very happy with it, after putting some good many kms on it. I replaced it with the msx and 18xl, because I ride quite a lot as the eucs are my only mode of transportation. The transition: going from 16 inch to 18 inch has been smooth, no big deal at all; I thought the new wheels would be less nimble; maybe they are, but for my use, which is commuting a few dozen miles a day and chilling on eucs on weekends, I did not encounter any issues there. The ugly 1: the msx battery cannot charge above 83.0v anymore. To be honnest I don't know if it ever could, as I never checked before, but that is something I have seen these last days, and it got me worried a bit. I use the original 1.5A slow charger to 100% and the radwerk's rapid charger to sometimes 80% sometimes 90% with different intensities. The ugly 2: the 18xl has the tire shuffing on the shell, I don't know why; I have to look into this. The ugly 3: these last few days, the 18xl beeps 4 times when I start getting some speed. I don't know why, I have to look into this. The bad 1: not so bad, but still, annoyances. I had to open the 18xl four times in 2 years of ownership. First two was to replace the tires because they got flat. I use slime but apparently when the hole is on the side of the tire it does not work that well. Or maybe I did not put enough or too much slime, who knows. The other two times was because I changed the inner shells both sides. I am not sure if that was really needed, but I saw they cracked where the bolts are bolted onto the wheel, and I experienced some shuffing of the wheel onto the shell on one side. The bad 2: not so bad again, but here you go. The msx trolley snapped ( the plasticky thing got broken at the junction with the rods ) once when I mishandled the trolley ( to be honnest I did not understand what happened, I just turned on the left and the wheel went bezerk ). So I had to replace the plastic handle with a 3D printed one from thingverse. The normal: I had to replace the trolley handle for my 18xl, because the wheel fell on a wall while the trolley was extended, thus bending the rods. The good 1: I never had to open the msx, no need, no flat tire, nothing. I don't remember if I put slime in the tire, I suppose I did, because I intended to do that for all my wheels. The good 2: I use the euc bodyguards from roll.nz, thanks @The Fat Unicyclist. Great gear; since I put them on, no new damage to the shells. I asked for personal customization, that was done very very well. I ranted a bit here some time ago about a minor thing, but that was an overreaction, maybe some bad coffee I drank that day or something.. Overall very happy with the gear, it adds protection and personnalization. The good 3: I have clocked 10000 km on the msx, bought and used since around january 2019, 6500 km on the 18xl, bought and used since maybe may 2019. They have replaced my car, my use of public transports, and some of my hobbies. Overall, I am very happy with those wheels, they performed well above my expectations, they did not cut out or do anything like that. Once I fix the uglies above, I will send them to retire in Africa for when I go on holiday there. I intend on replacing them with the sherman for long distance riding and commuting, and maybe with the 16x for fun riding in the city.
mike_bike_kite
Which wheel do you find better for commuting? and why get 2 wheels to replace the 16S?

As I really abandonned any other mode of transportation, I needed a permanent backup to any wheel I use for commuting. For my commute, which lasted more than one hour, the faster the better, so the MSX suited me better. But they both were reliable, so basically I alternate between them, with the MSX being a tiny bit less troublesome in the long run. But when it rains, I systematically use the 18XL, because the mudguard was a bit more effective.

Lol I could not use the 16s that much anyway, as my commute got longer, and I wanted to be able to come back with the wheel even when I forget or cannot charge it at the office.
mike_bike_kite
No issues in the rain then? Do you have many issues regarding the law? Any tips to avoid being stopped?
gena
Just now, mike_bike_kite said: No issues in the rain then? Do you have many issues regarding the law? Any tips to avoid being stopped? No issue with the rain whatsoever, even when the whole commute is under heavy rain. The euc bodyguard I suppose helps a bit as well, because it absorbs the water (? ). I was stopped once in Chelsea, and twice in Battersea Park. So I resolved to avoid that park(they have their own dedicated police there). It seems the force receives some specific instructions from time to time or from place to place; sad but nothing we can do about really, apart from respecting the traffic rules and avoiding getting past them if at all possible. I pass next to Scotland Yard and the parliament every day though
