Popular Post Cerbera
Well that was all the fun ! Smacked into the side of car that had pulled out in front of me without looking (or not being able to see because of adjacent foliage) earlier this evening at around 40 kph, bounced off it and dramatically came off the Master, landed on knees, then hips, then arms, cracked my head briefly on the road (not that hard TBH) and ended up on my back staring up at the sky. So that was interesting... Alas no 1st person footage of the crash because I wasn't recording that leg of the journey, but I did wheel myself to a safe place afterwards and made a quick 10 minute video documenting my immediate thoughts, and injuries etc, which I will upload here when I have edited it. In short though - I gotta say it - ATGATT saved me completely, and I am immensely grateful I was wearing the full Leatt bodysuit, the Dual axis knee / shin guards, gloves, wrist guards and heavy MC boots - ALL of which severely lessened my potential injuries, and let me walk away pretty much unphased and with minimal road rash. I didn't even have to sit down afterwards, and only had about 10 seconds shell-shock. The driver was very nice, and very apologetic, and although there was 'some damage' to his car, he didn't seem to care about that and was much more interested in making sure I was OK, which I was. I do like it when we can all be nice and 'British' about these things, and I shook his hand and left the scene with no hard feelings on either side. The Master, thanks to all that extra protection I added (good on ya Grizzla !) survived entirely unscathed, and performed wonderfully on the 20 km trip that followed. I am just about to do the really thorough inspection though now I have got her (and she got me) home again... So, an interesting day, and at last I know what it feels like to fall off a Master quite comprehensively, so major XP boost there Safe riding guys... Looks like ATGATT has been saving a few of us lately.................. Edited June 24, 2023 by Clem604
Popular Post Cerbera
Yeah, I honestly can't tell you how delighted I was to be able to just get up and walk away from it ! Even now, really not much hurts, only the road rashy bits where the elbow pads on the Leatt shifted ! I also have a bit of that on my arse, but probably wouldn't have done had I been wearing my Cordura riding pantaloons, but it was just too damn hot for those today, so jeans it was, and they did OK, only not ripping because they are the ultra skinny stretch type and have a bit of give to them...

Yeah I hear you, sliding on my back I have road rash all down the right side of my body from the lower back down. I'm looking at the Leatt padded shorts or something similar. It seems that If I had an extra layer it would have prevented the road rash on my ass. 3
Popular Post Cerbera
I should mention as well that both my hips and tailbone had additional protection from L1 pads I insert underneath my Leatt suit, and down the back of my jeans. They did also shift in the crash, but I have no injury to either of those areas... I should also add that I did have a second between when I knew a crash was inevitable, and when it actually happened, and apart from veering hard left to try and avoid him, I also crouched, thinking to place myself as low to the ground as possible to lessen the distance I would fall from, and I think that was a good decision I was very lucky to have had occur to me in time ! I hope your just-before impact mitigation was enough to minimize the impact sufficiently so that soft tissue injuries don't show up in the next few days. Sometimes it can take up to a few days before the pain can be felt. 40 km/h is a serious speed to crash into a car. But if you deflected off the car enough, that can save you in a major way. Yeah I think you are right about that - I did kinda bounce off the car, and that certainly did a lot to reduce my forward speed before I hit the ground, hence minimal sliding, and the Master falling straight over on its side, preventing the much-dreaded Begode dance of death. I am thin enough that I don't really have soft tissue - I am mainly skin and bone, but I'll watch out for stuff that hurts later ! Freeforester
Thanks for this. The importance and indeed value of the ‘Turn of the friendly card’ should also be recognised; had the driver emerged half to one second later, your recollection of the ensuing events may have been less clear. Had a similar experience on my 250cc motorbike around 40 years ago, with a similar outcome as yourself, thankfully. I still recognise the part chance and timing combined had in the relatively benign outcome, crash bars, gear etc notwithstanding.
Cerbera
Thanks for all the well-wishes guys - have woken up the next day a little bit achey, but none too worse for wear... For anyone who would like some extra detail, and a walkthrough of what happened, that is in my ride home video starting here 5 hours ago, techyiam said: I was wondering to myself whether you were a live news reporter for BBC or such in another life. Nah they wouldn't let me in - too sweary for them ! 1
alcatraz
Buy a lottery ticket. While terrifying, it's great when it works out ok like this time. Something could be sore in the morning. Take it easy. I get weary riding past parked cars facing into my path. You never know. Obstructed entrances, and even cars yielding, require caution. You think you're being nice by clearing their path quicker at a higher speed, and then it can get ugly. Even if I'm wasting their and my time, I slow down to be on the safe side. 1

But I would vote for him to be a spokesman for an electric wheel advocacy group if one existed. No wonder he was able to turned the cops around.
