S22 Pro, new rider question about squeaking.

Hi,

We just barely clocked 12km distance on this wheel and noticed this morning it was squeaking while riding (I'm following the rider from my bike, making the recording, you can listen here: https://imgur.com/a/Jd2UuCu ). Any ideas on what might be causing this sound? It's more noticable when riding, but you can still hear it (less noticible though) if you hold the wheel up in the air and let it free spin.

IDK if this helps but we did take it out to the sand nearby and got some in the wheel, although we're confident we got it all cleaned out, I guess I can't rule out there still being some sand someplace. But it had a couple of km travelled after that and didn't make any noise so this may not be relevant.

I'm hesitent to ride it anymore with the noise and don't know if maybe it's something I just need to clean (or oil/lubricate?), or if I need to find a shop to look at it.

Any help our guidance would be greatly appricated!

Thanks,

BC

Does the squeaking noise increase in frequency with wheel spin speed?

Yes. The squeak varied on speed for sure. The rest of the video had the audio ruined by wind on the mic or I would have shared more.

Idea: could it just be the tire squeaking against the rest of the wheel? Easy to see/check.

If not:

Fundamentally, it's the seller's job to fix such an issue with a brand new wheel. Contact your seller about this.

I wouldn't mention the sand to them, you'd have to sandblast the EUC for the sand to compromise it. Driving through sand (or even a simple tumble) shouldn't be an issue. Don't give them an easy excuse to blame you. Unless sand includes plenty of saltwater, then maybe they would have a point.

I guess this is an issue with the wheel bearings? The axle area. I can't imagine what else would it be. (Not sure what the latest is on the possible S22 issues, though.)

Thanks. Yeah, I'm thinking I'm going to call the retailer tomorrow to ask. We'll try and give it another clean as well. We went out to some sand dunes in Utah for camping and got the idea to try and break in the wheel with some off road like the motocross guys. Doh. Even the park ranger said the sand was probably too fine for it to work but encuraged us to have fun... and it totally didn't work. After cleaning it up we put a few more km on it and it seemed fine. It was just this morning the squeak started. Someone in my FB PEV group suggested lubricating it but I just wanted to get as many ideas as possible before trying fixes.

Thanks again for the reply.

I don't own a S22/PRO. So I could be off base.

But after listening to the noise emanating from the S22 Pro in the video, I think the noise is generated as a result of metal to metal contact that is starving for lubricant. On an electric wheel, there are very few moving parts, especially ones that rotate continuously as the electric wheel is moving. And to be metal to metal, I would surmise that it is in the wheel bearings since the S22 Pro doesn't use axle spacers.

How did you clean your wheel?

I believe we brushed everything clean and wiped it down, then just used WD-40 to flush out any remaining debris and sand from the wheel.

The bearing covers on a S22 have sometimes started to squeak that way. I guess they are dry from the wrong place.

WD40 has solvents in it that effectively remove existing greases and oils. It’s not a good product to use somewhere where oils already exist. You could try to lubricate the axle/bearing cover area with a solvent free lubricant.

Oh man, I can't believe that didn't even occur to me. That's the whole point of using it to clean wheel it to effectively wash everything away... which could include libricating grease. I'm still going to call eWheels in the morning and see what the recommend for lubricating, and I'm going to presume that's exactly the problem.

Thanks!

Followup! Great news. So I spoke with eWheels and they recommended I use a lubricating spray with PTFE. They had me apply PTFE spray around the bearing ring. It is quieter now than when we first received it.

Specifically I used "WD-40 Specialist Dry Lube with PTFE".

I gotta give eWheels a huge hat tip, they've been super helpful every step of the way with the S22 Pro from purchase to support.

Also thanks to everyone here for the feedback here as well.

Cheers!

Hello, I have just the same problem on my new 4000w motor (I did also have it on the old 3300w motor).

I teared down the motor hub, put some bearing grease on the inner side of the seal (which is in contact with the motor stator) but the noise is still present.

Also tried to spray some PTFE lube from the outside (without dismantle the motor), with no success 😥.

I've already ordered replacement seal as this is my last guess (only have this noise on the right side seal).

If you have any more information/advice, I'll take it

i would recommend to grease rollers with something caled marine shaft grease, to protect them from salt/rust. Ofc dirt would get on grease, but at least wont go inside bearings

Hello there,

I faced the same issue presented by @ChasingEUC. Surprisingly, after changing my sealing rings once, the problem kept on coming back. I eventually opened my motor and change both bearings and sealing rings again (adding white lithium grease in the rings), the problem came back again.

I might try to spray some PTFE lubricant on the rings as well but, eh, my experience here makes me start to think that the problem will keep on coming back every 60 to 100 miles ...

Maybe it would be interesting to try to use the wheel without the rings as long as the bearings to assess that indeed they are responsible for this annoying  squeaking noise.

Cheers from France :)

hello, tbh it was hard to make out the specific noise from the video, but I've had a whistling noise from my s22 pro as well and fixed it just by removing all the stickers on the inside. thats all :p

Had further no problems outside some dirty sliders and a cracked kickstand, all I do is rinse out all the slider channels with my garden ho every 1-2 weeks depending on what type of abuse I gave it and then spray some ptfe on it.

but I could be lucky I dunno
