LanghamP
Silly me, I had thought until today it's because Christians and Jews are loving and charitable. From this story of a nurse who lost her pension, apparently religiously affiliated hospitals don't pay pension insurance. The hospital had underfunded (or not funded/raided) the pension, then not paid out the pension, and didn't even have insurance! A triple whammy. I would guess that's why almost all big hospitals are religious; the unfair advantage by not having to pay pension insurance and indeed not even setting aside money to go into the pension means they can distort the market, eliminating non religious competitors. That seems very uncharitable to me.
