Russian Epiphany - Jan 19 and winter water immersion

I read recently that Russian 'Epiphany' is celebrated on Jan 19 and that ritual water immersion by followers of the Orthodox often take a dip in frigid Russian waters as part of the Epiphany celebration.

I'm on an Android notification for the Moscow Times and today's notification said that Putin, who was seen celebrating Christmas in St. Petersburg, celebrated Epiphany with such a cold water dip.

Oddly , every time I see an Android notification for a Moscow Times news story (MT) the first thought that comes to mind is Montana.

I had never before made the association of Russian January winter swimming with a religious celebration.

Several videos of less prominent but equally 'Orthodox believers' can be seen on YouTube.

After the government shutdown at midnight Friday I read on 'Tass' that the US ambassador to Russia was planning to give the Jan 19 Epiphany ritual a try:
