USB devices can't be recharged under windows 8.1 / 10 - solution

Since the upgrade from windows 7 to windows 10 some of my USB devices couldn't be recharged anymore.

Data transfer - no problem.

Recharging the battery of the device - nope, not anymore.

After some headscratching (everything was fine with windows 7) and some googling it turned out that the culprit is the 'improved' energy management of windows 8.1 and 10.

Unfortunately there is no patch (yet) to solve this problem, a little registry tuning is neccessary.

But Microsoft has provided a step by step guide that works really well.

I hope this helps anyone who wondered what the hell is going on with these USB devices.
