In my original thread, I had realized I wanted to wait for the new wheels to come out before picking out my first wheel. But in my impatience, rather than buying a “starter” wheel I would quickly outgrow, I thought maybe I could get started on my “second” wheel, which was likely to be an MTen3. Sober voices advised me to reconsider, but I figured I could take a careful and patient approach since I was going to have to wait regardless. Worst case, I figured I would put the rocket back in my proverbial pocket and learn on my “main” once I knew what that would be. This is an MTen3 512Wh purchased from @Jason McNeil at eWheels (Thanks Jason!). For your advice and amusement, here is my learning log so far (2 days): Day 1: I inflated the wheel to 40 psi, and attached some clumsy ad-hoc bumpers made of pool noodles. The wheel arrived with the calibration obviously way forward of level, so I calibrated the wheel to what I thought was level (used a level on the pedals). 45 min in the garage: Damn, this thing is scary. How am I supposed to balance on it when it feels like it wants any excuse to bludgeon my ankles? (I wore some old steel-toed high-top sneaker/hiking boot hybrids I had on hand) I used two chairs to get mounted, getting a feel for the pendulum back and forth and how wheel decides which way to push. I tried to use a belt as a strap, but I wasn’t coordinated enough to hold the strap while using the chairs, and the this belt had some elasticity that made it feel dangerous to use, so I put it aside. I did a couple of supported turns around one of the chairs, but not without some minor mishaps. In trying to free ride about five feet to a third chair, the wheel took a couple of minor spills and one just strong enough to knock off some of the noodle bumpers but otherwise scratch little more than the pedals. I stopped out of exhaustion and heat — it’s already in the 90’s here — and although I was up for another go that night, other plans got in the way. No falls or injuries to myself. Some minor cosmetic injuries to wheel. Day 2: My butt and back are sore. The back I blame more on manhandling the wheel than on riding it. Not sure about the butt. Legs are fine, probably on account of a career that has me standing most of the day, and a habit of regular walking. I reduced tire inflation to 30 psi after reading more on forums. Wheel calibration still looked off, so I redid that. I improvised a better strap out of a luggage strap. My wife helped me secure my noodle bumpers better. 30 min on a stretch of sidewalk: I feel like such a tool. My wife offered to take my hand on a stretch of sidewalk back and forth a number of times, as I tried not to use more support than necessary. Alas, I needed a lot of support. Good thing she is, um, supportive. Nevermind that it looked to the neighbors like she was walking a still-dripping newborn calf. I stopped after my legs were feeling wobbly enough that it was getting harder rather than easier. The new strap worked out a lot better: No falls or injuries to myself (or my wife). No significant spills for the wheel. A few hours later... 30 min in the garage (shade!): Yeah, I don’t know about this triangle method. I went out mostly to try to practice walking the wheel under one leg and then lifting my off leg towards an eventual mounting maneuver. I experimented a lot with foot positioning and knee angles to try to feel what people are talking about with this. I got to where I could kind of pivot around on my off foot, but nowhere near being able to hold my off leg airborne for even a moment, except in an awkward hop. The height at which I have to bite the MTen3 into my leg feels way too low for that maneuver, like I would crack my leg in half trying to support my full weight. No successful mounts, until I resorted to using a wall for a bit. The improved sense of mass centering from the triangle training did at least make mounting from the wall feel easier. I had enough room to try and make a wide arc around the garage unsupported, but never made it more than half way, and never felt very stable on these attempts. I wonder if my second attempt at calibration did more harm than good. I stopped out of a combination of drenching sweat in the heat+jeans+gear and aerobic exhaustion from all of the stepping and bending over to walk the wheel back to the wall. The strap is still working well to prevent damage. My right inside calf is a bit tender, but no falls and no other injuries to myself. No new spills for the wheel. A couple hours later… Put 2 oz. slime in the wheel (exactly, as measured by kitchen scale) and reinflated to 32 psi — with @Marty Backe's video giving me the confidence needed. I then precisely re-calibrated on my most level surface with a level (looks good now) and did another 5 minutes of my garage antics to distribute the slime. Seemed stable enough. Two hours later... 15 min on a stretch of sidewalk: Who’s a good wife? She is! She’s a good wife! We repeated our morning walk, but by the end of this one we were going a little quicker, I was standing taller, feeling a lot more stable, and it probably looked to outsiders more like I was walking my wife than the other way around. If nothing else, I think I have the psi and calibration dialed in. I let go a few times, but only made it as far as about 5 meters before making a controlled step-off and tugging on the strap. I started to get glimpses of the “it” I’m trying to get, and stopped the session when I felt previously-unactivated leg muscles start to wobble out of energy. No injuries to myself. No new spills for the wheel. Looking forward to tomorrow evening, when I’ll have my next riding opportunity. Questions: Being the only one I know of around here with a wheel, it’s hard to know what’s normal for me, my wheel, or wheels in general. Here’s what’s on my mind tonight: From the first power up, the wheel has always had a kind of purring vibration and faint sound that fluctuates, like there’s an honest-to-god spinny thing in there... but I was under the impression that the only gyro is on a chip — that all balancing is handled by motor torque adjustment. Is this vibration just the feeling of the motor elements taking turns doing the microadjustments that keep the wheel stable, or is something wrong with my wheel? Unlike yesterday and this morning, as of this afternoon, when powering on the wheel, I got a double chirp, sometimes right away, sometimes a few seconds after. I thought maybe this was a battery indication, as I hadn’t charged since yesterday. But having charged up to full before my final session today (as indicated by green charger light on OEM charger), it was still doing it (the first time, but not on two subsequent times). What does this mean? I’d kill for a manual. Fully charged (per charger) and idle, WheelLog reports a 100% charge but a voltage only in the mid 60s. Isn’t this an 84v wheel? How does that work? Are the sport/soft modes worth playing with at my stage? Are they even staying at whatever I set them to? I thought I had read somewhere that the Gotway app defaults it to something every time it is loaded. Thanks for all your advice and support! I’ll keep the log going until you or I are sick of it. You're probably the first person learning on an Mten3. It'll just get easier and easier. FWIW, my Mten3 tire pressure is between 33 and 35 psi. So you're probably at a good level. 1) Yes, these wheels can make all kinds of 'purring/rumbling' sounds when just turned on. This is normal. And the Mten3 is such a torquey (is that a word ) wheel that it makes all kinds of motor sounds. 2) Sounds like the double-chirp you get when the wheel connects to the app. WheelLog, if it's running, will auto-reconnect to the wheel that it was connected to last. I'm pretty sure that Gotway app does not do that. Let me know if this isn't the case. 3) Yes, the WheelLog app (did you get the version that I recommend - it allows you to change the wheel settings?) does not show the correct voltage. The battery level is correct. Personally, I only ever look at my battery level. 4) For learning, I would stick with the hard-level. The soft level can be enjoyable for cruising, but more with the other gotway wheels. I think the Mten3 is best if always in hard-mode. If you are using the IOS Gotway app, it's half-baked and resets the wheel settings every time you connect. Android users don't get to experience that particular joy As this video perhaps shows, when I lift my foot the wheel is pressing firmly against the leg that is already on the wheel. Cannings Posted April 9, 2018 Share Posted April 9, 2018 Talking about the app, and without wanting to make another thread really, I was looking into the moving figure that wheellog calls "Battery" and in the source code this is the maths behind the "Battery" level int battery; if (mVoltage <= 5290) { battery = 0; } else if (mVoltage >= 6580) { battery = 100; } else { battery = (mVoltage - 5290) / 13; } setBatteryPercent(battery); I don't know if the wheel doesn't broadcast as Battery remaining stat but this just looks like a very weird way to calculate it. the mVoltage variable itself comes from data from the wheel but even that isn't a set output: mVoltage = (data[2] * 256) + (data[3] & 255); I'm not a java coder so I can't really get into the nitty gritty of this, I may have a play with trying to communicate with the wheel at home though to see what outputs it gives. One thing you can try, as it will be useful for bigger wheels and may not come up with the mten3 so naturally (not sure, never tried one): balance by rotating your hips/upper body against your lower body (instead of shifting weight between your legs). Same principle how the front tire of a bicycle keeps you upright, it rotates to counter any tilt. You can get a feel for what I mean by putting a piece of paper on a slippery (concrete, tiles, ...) floor, standing on it (feet close together like on the wheel), and doing rapid hips turns to rotate the paper on the spot without turning your upper body. Your questions: 1. That's normal Gotway electronics. Turn on the light, the sand-y sound may get louder if you listen closely. 2. App connecting? 3. GW 84V wheels report wrong voltages so Gotway wouldn't have to change their (contracted out of house) app from their 67.2V wheels. Ignore. It's a GotwayTM 4. Just try and see. Don't forget, patience and breaks (for your brain to process the new info) are also part of learning. You'll get better overnight, literally. A pair of nice dull-red sores appeared on the inside of my leg in the expected beginner areas, but with only a little tenderness. Excited for the evening ride. 20 min on crappy grass: I’m doing it! Once temperatures dropped closer to sunset, the wife promenaded me on my wheel over to a park/drainage basin of coarse, lumpy grass. Here, I moved almost at once into letting go and seeing how far I could go unassisted. Within 10 minutes I was making at least 10-20 meters, albeit with little control over my direction. I had one rough (but controlled) dismount when I saw a deep divot just in time to anticipate the sudden stop of the wheel. Feeling gutsy, I also pulled off my first rough-but-successful free mount! I occasionally made some wide turns around a tree in my intended direction, but the inconsistent terrain was making it hard to feel out where my turns were going wrong, so we moved over to a little-trafficked asphalt cul-de-sac. 20 min on asphalt: I’m king of the world! So much easier! Almost immediately, I was staying up for 30 seconds at a time, then for multiple minutes, making turns of varying grace and diameter — not always in the combination I had envisioned, but controlled enough to keep the ride going. I was finding a shoulder-led turn easiest, especially if I avoided thinking too hard about it. Adding a bit of inside leg dip to my shoulder turns then allowed me to sharpen them into some figure eights around two manholes about three meters apart. What a difference a day makes! The wife commented on my startling grace and poise She hadn’t realized that wheelers can resemble figure skaters. I can tell she’s going to want to try it soon. I did a couple of snappy hip swivels of the kind @meepmeepmayer suggested, but these really did feel like overkill for this wheel. 25 min on concrete sidewalk and driveway: Just one more lap! The Mrs. had other things to do, so we parted ways on the driveway, where I swore I was just going to work on my free mounts for a bit. To my surprise, I was successful on about every third attempt. The breakthrough for me was seeing the whole maneuver as a time-sensitive event where the motions have to take place neither too quickly or too slowly. Trying to mirror the timing of @Marty Backe’s demo video, I first made sure I felt centered in the positioning of my right leg, then smoothly applied weight to it as I lifted my left leg up and simultaneously tilted forward in one fluid motion. With this new superpower in hand, I fired up the headlight in the deepening dark and proceeded to do rings around the driveway and laps along a fifty-meter stretch of quiet sidewalk, enjoying the slight elevation change at the edge of the driveway, and challenging myself to make a 1-meter 180 at the end of my stretch of sidewalk. (I succeeded about half the time.) It was odd that the direction of the headlight often felt like it was lagging behind my motion, but I realized that this was because I was leading my turns with my upper body and letting my feet catch up. I was having a blast, and stopped mostly because I felt like I was pressing my luck: my legs were starting to get a little wobbly, and I didn’t want to end the night with a bad pedestrian encounter or a fall. I’m feeling pretty lucky that I didn’t have to move out of the way for anyone or anything tonight, and I ended with a clean record: No injuries to myself. No new spills for the wheel. So… getting to a point where I can now efficiently self-train didn’t take me nearly as long as I was prepared for it to. Looking back over the last three days, the most useful parts by far were the wife-assisted ones. Maximizing my up-time really helped me dial in my balance and afforded me with enough extra brainpower to use the strap successfully on my dismounts. The most useful thing I did solo was feel out the most centered and balanced position for my right leg — the one that would let me pivot around in a circle anchored on my left leg. From that point, my wife noticed a trend where my assisted mounts were needing less and less assistance. The time I spent struggling alone around chairs and against a wall will be remembered as a grueling, sweaty ordeal where I was never really up for long enough to feel like I was developing any muscle memory. If I had to do it again, I think focusing only on the more effective parts would have me at king-of-the-world stage in a little under two hours total. Tomorrow, I’m thinking I’ll continue to focus on free mounts and slow, tight turns, and also add some gentle curb transition bumps into the mix. I might try a bit of backwards as well, since it sounds like this is a separate skill that freaks out veterans who put it off. Maybe it’s easier while you’re still burning in your formational reflexes? We’ll find out! Thanks for your support, guys! Special shout out to Marty! My inner leg bruises have darkened, but are still not overly tender. 60 min on sidewalk and asphalt: Legs… heavy. Everything just felt harder than it should have on this run, which was disappointing after the thrills of last night. I blame legs that haven’t fully recovered from the day before. I took lots of opportunities to free mount, but didn’t really up my success ratio over yesterday’s 1 in 3, and the attempts were taking more out of me. I don’t have enough control yet to adjust a mount that leaves my left leg in a position too challenging to work from, which means I was often dismounting within a few seconds and repeating the process to exhausting effect. The unseasonably high heat today (95 F near sunset) didn't help. I followed my training plan from yesterday, but with scaled-back ambition: about five minutes of backwards practice holding my wife’s hand, where I would do a slow pendulum into reverse and keep going for a few meters (hard); soloing forward up and down sidewalk curb transitions to get more used to overcoming bumps (easier); making slow, tight turns (somewhere in between). I covered more of the neighborhood and was within sight of a lot more bystanders tonight, which did add some jitters, but I was moving at grandma speeds (average cruising speed just over 6 kph) and mostly ignored. I stopped after realizing I had forgotten an evening obligation and hauled home at a screaming top speed of 19 kph. No injuries. No spills. 20 min on sidewalk and asphalt: Ow. After my obligation, I turned on the headlight and went out for a few slow laps, feeling mostly in control except for mounts that kept getting harder. After a couple of failures that resulted in slapping the side of the machine into my leg bruises, I called it in. A little more bruising. No spills. All in all, nothing too exciting today, but that’s regression to the mean for you. I remind myself that I am trying to be the tortoise in this race, and not the hare. I'll play tomorrow by ear, and not be afraid to just take the day off if my legs aren't feeling it. The weather should be much cooler in a couple days. In regards to mounting, I had some real issues with just raw starts, I'd be clinging onto lamposts, fences anything around to get back on my wheel. Then almost out the blue as I stopped and put one foot down it just sort of clicked when I started off. Even now after 4 months I still have some wobbly starts which are really annoying when i'm crossing a road or something with people watching but i've "mostly" got it Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I think I’m feelin’ it… That evening… 70 min on sidewalk and asphalt: Make like Chubby Checker… I started off applying what I had gleaned by scrutinizing @Marty Backe's "Many Faces" mounting video, which is that, on his non-rolling starts, he holds the inward angle of the wheel steady for half a second until his other foot is pretty much mounted; I had been relying more on snap timing, which I found hard to do well and dangerous to do wrong. In my Day 2 attempts at triangle mounting, holding such an angle had felt impossible, but my newly muscled wheel legs allowed me to hold the pose just a bit longer tonight and mount with greater success and less trauma. I’m now succeeding on about every other attempt, and I only smacked my bruise a couple of times. For the first 20 minutes or so, I was just cruising leisurely, trying to gauge what my legs would tolerate. Then, I tentatively started doing a bit of gentle slaloming to see if this would help me feel a little less like the wheel could drift out from under me at any time. I accidentally broke into a dance-like twisting motion and suddenly discovered why I’ve sucked at skiing, roller skating, ice skating, and skateboarding my whole life: I hadn’t really grokked that my lower body can be a full three-axis chassis and suspension handling even most lateral movement independent of my upper body — that my legs aren't limited to shock absorption and foot-lowering for turns. With this new range of motion unlocked, I noticed immediate improvement in my stability and control, and started having a lot more fun. I slalomed slower and tighter, cutting paths around and between various bits of sidewalk detritus. Wheelog showed an amusing steady decline in my average speed during the evening (at one point I noticed a little girl on a scooter easily outracing me on the opposite sidewalk) as I slid into tighter slaloms and ended the night working on my turns. The big thing that has been tripping me up on turns, I decided, is unexpected changes of velocity. So I focused on trying to make medium-sized turns at a consistent speed, and spiraling in tighter or wider as I felt more or less in control. I began to feel some success, and will be doing more of that next time. You definitely want to avoid the snap timing type of mount, which most of us started with. These two things, pulses and discrete, albeit very small, steps is what generates the strange sounds you can hear. If you take a loudspeaker apart you will see it’s construction is very similar to an electric motor, indeed the controllers I use for the brushless d.c. motors in model aircraft actually send quite loud beeps to the motors as status warnings. What I had thought of as a hip turn was a deliberate one-time motion. There won't really be any way to say without more data points. My sense so far is that my learning pace is well within the range of normal variation for someone with a more conventional first ride. If I have no great difficulty adapting to a 16"+, I might have the beginnings of a case that maybe a tiny wheel is actually the better place to start. Having no experience with the alternative, my current impressions of starting out small are: Pros: In those first hours when you have to schlep the wheel around by hand a lot, lighter is nicer. (My back was still hurting after, even so.) The mass of the uncontrolled object potentially injuring you or others in a spill is lower. Wheel is more stable at lower speeds, reducing the potential for a spill becoming a fall at learning speeds. Lower stable speed makes it easier for a partner to help you train by holding your hand and walking beside you at a comfortable pace. (I can't say enough about how useful my wife was to me here.) Twitchier wheel means more balance adjustments per minute (?), meaning that you get more balance practice in with fewer clock hours. Being able to turn very sharp and very frequently means you can get more maneuvering practice in with fewer clock hours. Ability to practice in smaller spaces opens up more spaces, which can help you avoid traffic, gawking eyes, and nighttime darkness. Cons: A bigger wheel might have come with a trolley handle for those first days' schleppings. A less twitchy wheel means your brain has more time to figure out the muscle adjustments needed to balance. (?) (I knew what I was trying to do, but it did feel like it happened too fast to consciously control it. Until I could do it without thinking, I couldn't do it at all. Is that different on a normal wheel?) Might not build up much strength in the muscles more important to maneuvering bigger wheels (?) A small wheel being more sensitive to uneven terrain, learning on grass is a less viable option. I've got my preorder deposit with Jason pointed at the V10F and he thinks I'm probably in the early May shipment. Of the newer wheels, the V10F is definitely the one calling out to me. The first I may be able to credit to my use of a strap after Day 1, but the second has just never been an issue for me. All of my leg bruising has been on the inside of my right leg, and attributable to (mostly failed) mounting attempts. I do wonder if a large sample size of learners on different size wheels would show different patterns of injuries relating to where people naturally grip the wheel; on this wheel, I grip as much with the inside of my solidly-shod foot as I do with my lower leg. The leg bruises are dark, but healing and less tender than yesterday. 50 min on sidewalk and asphalt: Mariah? Why would you call the wind that? That’s a stupid name. Got off to a later start tonight because I needed to wait for some of the Sonoran to settle out of the atmosphere. By the time I want out, visibility was up to 1-2 miles, with winds down to about 10 mph and gusts approaching 25 mph. Strong headwinds on one stretch made for interesting riding where I had to lean hard forward just to keep moving, but things only felt a little sketchy once or twice, so I kept going. Building on yesterday’s new skills, I ventured a little farther from home than previously and kept working on my maneuvering, trying tonight to be more aware of velocity changes and to hit my slaloming targets at intentional speeds. I also worked on accelerating and decelerating in quicker and more controlled fashion, but not in time to keep me from stepping off when an SUV that I thought was turning into a driveway was actually setting up to back into a different driveway. (I was going slow, and was at least 15 feet away, but I over-braked and stalled.) I did better on a couple of later occasions when I slowed to a crawl to yield to kids on bikes cutting across my way on bikes. I opened up the throttle for a brief stretch to see if I could lose a little bicycle fanboy trailing me (yup). It wasn’t until I checked the log that I saw I had reached a new top speed of 31 kph — a little faster than I would have estimated at the time, and way faster than my average speed tonight of about 10 kph. My impression of that speed on this wheel was “I’m ok with this for short bursts, but I wouldn’t want to keep that up.” I did a brief stretch of patchy grass riding to see if my new control skills would help (very much so!), but my usual grass haunt was occupied, so this was very limited. After a bit more work on tight turns, I stopped on account of darkness and dry eyes from the wind and dust. I nailed about two thirds of my mounts tonight, with no painful failures, although, in all fairness, I didn’t give myself as many reasons to re-mount tonight. Maybe that bruise can finish healing now? The weather is supposed to be beautiful this weekend — it’s already so much cooler — and I intend to ride the hell out of this wheel. Very aware of my legs all day; they don’t feel like my own anymore, but rather like I’ve borrowed the legs of someone who works out . They don’t operate quite the same, and I occasionally feel clumsy with them. 60 min on mixed terrain: Gleaming the cube! I went looking for trouble this evening in beautiful 70-75 F weather, just generally trying to push out the edges of my comfort zone. I did several laps into, out of, and around good ol’ Crappy Grass Drainage Basin, without even dismounting to get over the significant sidewalk bump and steep grassy slopes at the edges. (I had to step once, but it wasn’t anything scary.) I felt very in control by my last circuit. Just remembering to lean a little harder to keep the momentum up helped a lot, as did leaving extra play in my legs and waist to handle unseen contours. I also struck off onto an off-road cut between two neighborhoods that goes from dirt and mixed gravel, to hard-packed dirt, to thick, lush grass. Where the gravel was coarse and on a side slope, it gave me a lot of trouble, and I had to dismount and walk a few meters in search of a good place to get back on. The hard dirt was better, but felt wobblier and slicker than it looked. The grass was high enough to brush against the shell and pedals a bit, but nothing a bit more lean couldn’t push through. The scary part about the thick grass was that I’ve known that route to have some hidden divots and muddy patches; I did not find any tonight. On sidewalk and street, I played around with aggressive acceleration and deceleration, challenging myself to reach a given point 10-15 meters ahead in the quickest time yet cross it at a crawl. No scary moments here, and I think I have room to push harder yet. The most fun I’ve had yet on an EUC was when I ended the evening using the sidewalk in front of my house as an imaginary racetrack where I combined these speed sprints with a precision U-turn at each end: a 180° turn within one square of sidewalk. This was easier than I expected, as I actually found it to be cleaner and more exhilarating with a bit speed. It probably didn’t look as cool as it felt, but the sensation was of leaving most of my mass in the direction I intended to end up in while my legs swung out beneath me to complete the maneuver. Instinctively being able to do a slingshot turn like that from a modest cruising speed would have come in handy a couple of times earlier in the evening: cars pulling in and out of places had given me plenty of time to act, but I hadn’t been able to compute a pathing solution any more fluid than coming to a quick stop and stepping off. Maybe now I will! I pulled the purchase trigger on Marty’s rear-view mirror tonight in recognition of this new trick, figuring that if I’m going to get out of trouble by going the other way, I’d better be sure I’m not just heading for a different kind of trouble. I had gone into the evening fully planning to have my first pedal scrape so I could start getting a feel for that limit. It still spooked me when it finally happened, though, and I had an ugly dismount that allowed the wheel to spin and flop enough to pop off most of my pool noodle hazard bumpers (for the first time since Day 1) before I got it back under strap control. This was when I stopped for the night — not because I was afraid to get back on, but because I was now fatigued enough that I knew I wouldn’t want to go out again by the time I got my wheel’s padding put back together. This was a good night. My mounts were pretty solid. Hitting them about 80% of the time, with less drama, made me more willing to push the limits of my control, since getting back up is no longer a huge source of anxiety and fatigue. No injuries. One good spill for the wheel, but no new damage I can detect beyond a bit of fresh pedal scrape. Now that the weekend is here, I might have the time to get in more than one decent ride a day. Legs feel buff enough for probably two hours’ riding, but just before bed last night I was struck by a sudden back cramp/spasm thing. I’m not prone to back pains, so this was a new and disconcerting experience. I’m not convinced it had anything to do with the wheel, and think it more likely to have been connected with me trying to earn a “good dad” badge with my daughter earlier that day. This involved running alongside a tottering bicycle with a hand or two on the handlebars in a vain attempt to help her shake her training wheels. There was real question as to whether I would even try to ride at all today, as I woke up with crippling pains whenever I tried to move from a rested to standing position or vice versa. By afternoon, the intensity had faded and did not seem to be triggered by the range of motion I use on my wheel, so I tentatively decided to “send it”. 40 min on sidewalk and asphalt: Steady as she goes… I avoided going very far or pushing my boundaries. My back wasn’t bothering me while mounted, but I wanted to avoid the potential for any issues that could require me to carry the wheel any distance. Just a leisurely cruise. Stopped because it was sunny and I hadn’t taken any precautions to prevent sunburn. A few hours later… 45 min on mixed terrain: Ready to rumble?... Tonight’s innovation was a kludgy effort to extend the reach of the upper pads on the MTen3, which my legs can never really seem to make contact with except in steep turns. (If the pedals were wider or my legs were chunkier, maybe?) It’s probably been good for my skills to learn to control without relying on leg contact, but I feel like it has also made it extra hard to mount and recover from wobbles, especially on rough terrain. This mod had an immediately noticeable impact on how stable I felt, and helped me stay angled for longer during my mounts. I’ll be working on a more permanent solution to this tomorrow. Ideally, I think I think I want the padding to extend about an inch on either side, but with the outer half inch being very soft and serving mostly to create an awareness of where more pressure would have an effect. (I also saw, in the New York City group ride videos posted today, that one MTen3 user seemed to have removed the lower pads entirely, which may have the perceived effect of widening the pedals and extending the upper pads. Not sure I want to go there, though.) With this increased stability, I attempted the longer fork on that off-road cut that starts on coarse gravel. Fail. I couldn’t make it without dismounting and walking it again. It’s not just the gravel, but the thick covering of dry plant debris in which the gravel is embedded — with a bit of side slope to boot. The combination makes it too hard to maintain traction. I think a bigger wheel would handle it better, but it may still pose a challenge. The more thinly-covered sections were squirrely (a tire with deeper tread would probably help), but navigable. From there, I hit some challenging sidewalks in neighborhoods where the driveways are cheaply angled through the sidewalks themselves, creating nasty surprise side slopes. I was taking them on for the challenge, and didn’t find them too difficult, but I don’t feel like I’ve found the optimal way to handle them, in terms of which mix of leaning/turning/tipping to apply. My dominant thought was that hitting such dips unawares at speed would make for a bad day. Other modest milestones tonight included two light pedal scrapes that didn’t spook and dismount me, my first crossings of a faster-traffic street between neighborhoods, and my first time moving past a pedestrian on the sidewalk. (I’ve studiously planned far ahead and steered clear up until now, but my slow game is pretty tight, and this was a non-event.) Stopped for the night on account of darkness and general fatigue.
