Help!! My son got a Minilite for Christmas. Why does it lean back and try to stop when he reached 10mph?

That's called tiltback - a normal feature for most/all self balancing vehicles.

It's more or less the only way to warn the rider reliably that top speed is reached and "forces" him to slow down.

I realize that it tops out at 10 but why the sudden jerk as a safety feature?

That it is sudden is a bad firmware implementation (like unfortionatly again on all self balancing vehicles) and would not be necessaray.

If one accelerates not so hard into the tiltback, it will come softer :D

Can that be turned off?

For the ninebot EUCs not, so i assume also not for the minilite - if so it should be written in the manual?

Hello

first is riding tutorial to finish , completely, ride for 1 km slowly, safety, without beep, after 1 km, your speed is unlock, if not automatically, tap on screen speed limit mode for open limit speed

please use the app and read user's manual

for minilite you can get it here http://www.segway.com/media/2323/25608-00001_12-minilite-user-manual-en.pdf
