Those of us who live in places with variable climates have to be extra careful because of the way changing temperatures causes asphalt to expand and contract. I've considered bringing my phone with me and taking pictures of the various potholes along my route and sending them to the city to be filled in, but it's too much hassle. It was annoying to see that the last pothole to catch me got filled in a week after I crashed. Personally, I'm not a fan of riding over 35km/h. I don't like that new wheels are basically just taking the same designs for the most part and raising the max speed as though that should be the measure of progress. agree. For me 50kph though is my max. Its good to have a little headroom but more is excessive. Though more torque and power is good
ir_fuel
The only thing you can do is gear up. Look at all those busted knees and hands in the posts above. Now remember what they would have looked like with knee protectors and wrist guards (and the impact those protectors would have absorbed). My G-Form protectors are very comfy. Sometimes I am still wearing them 1 hour after riding since they don't bother me at all and I have to take my shoes off to remove them. It still amazes me that we don't see any head injuries, considering the amount of riders that don't even wear helmets. Saw a video on here a couple of days ago of Dutch people riding without any protection at decent speed with their hands in their pockets. That's just asking for trouble imo. Luckily (actually not because i suit up for every ride) with knee pads, elbow pads, wristguards and a full face helmet. And i got scratches not that bad even though i was wearing a tshirt only they were only surface scratches that went away. And the only actual damage that happened was a broken fractured collar bone. Which is one of the easiest bones to break in the body and i quote from a website i looked at: "broken collar bones are usually associated with bicycle falls" so its not like you need to do much to break it. I even got a video reccomended the same day from a channel called "corridor crew" where a guy jumped over a table and broke his collar bone in 2 spots and it was broken completely. So i wouldnt call euc a super unsafe vehicle or anything. But with all things there is risks

Those with head injuries were unable to get back to us. Since the vast majority of EUC miles are done solo (hehe pun), it follows riders with head injuries apparently disappear with no fellow riders as witnesses. who_the
Faceplant — Overspeed/overlean — Generic X3 clone1 Sprained left knee – Clipped left pedal on speed bump – Kingsong 14C2 Sprained shoulder – Overspeed/overlean– Kingsong 14C Sprained shoulder – Overspeed/overlean/blown fuse – Kingsong 14C Broken left wrist – Pothole/speed – Gotway Tesla5 Sprained shoulder, bruised elbow – Pine cone – Gotway MSuper V3S+6 Sprained right big toe – Pothole/speed – Gotway MSuper V3S+7 I'm listing only the falls/crashes that resulted in actual injuries, not just pain or swelling. Too many of those to count (easily dozens in 3 years of wheeling), most my fault, a few due either to other cars or riders or external hazards. In several of these crashes I have dinged or scratched my DOT motorcycle helmet, which I wear at nearly all times when riding. Very thankful for my headwear for protecting me. I always wear gloves when I ride, even for a short or controlled ride without a helmet. I also wear full knee pads under my pants and a left elbow pad (have never fallen on the right, but countless times on the left). 1 I actually can't believe I rode this incredibly sketchy and incapable wheel in San Francisco traffic at all, let alone while escaping serious injury. This crash was out of traffic, on a shared pedestrian/bike path along the Embarcadero, right in front of a pack of young girls. 2 My first serious crash. Was traveling at least 15 mph. Couldn't walk at all but was able to wheel two miles to work. Didn't wheel for a month until I recovered. 5 Rode for more than a month with a broken left wrist. After a month, rather than getting better, the wrist got worse, hurt more, and started clicking like crazy. Emergency room gave me a wristguard which I still wear to this day, it is fabulous. (This was a bad day, had three crashes in one day, two my fault, one the fault of a bicyclist, who hit me head-on!) Clean distal radius fracture, was casted for 4 weeks and has healed perfectly and pain-free. 6 We call pine cones cold-blooded assassins here. Lurking in the shadows was this one, on a night ride. 7 Compelling argument for steel toe footwear while riding. Nearly three months later I am only halfway to a new toenail. I am ogling a pair of Timberland Pro.
Japmerican
I don't have an injury yet (knock on wood) but I have had a crash already and I just wanted to share that, as we've seen in all the previous posts, and from my video below, safety equipment was created for a reason and works when used correctly! My crash was minor, but I was so pleased with how "gentle" (not the right word, but I'll keep it) the crash was because of the equipment I was wearing. RockyTop
I have never had a single accident or injury. I have had a few unscheduled dismounts that resulted in an immediate temporary discomfort. Twice I hit a slick spot while turning. ( oil in parking garage and slick Georgia mud) I was also surprised how easy it is to hit the peddles when we off roading. You have to take the high spot instead of the low spot. Riding dirt bikes I tend to put my tire in the low spot to keep it from sliding out. Xoltri
I've had 2 falls in ~4500km. Once on my first generic wheel that just had a mechanical on/off switch. The switch died, wheel turned off, ended up on the pavement. Luckily only at 12km/h. Ended up throwing that wheel in the garbage eventually. And on my KS 16B I was riding in November and slipped on some ice around a turn. Managed to catch myself on all fours, but my keys did rip through my new rain jacket, doh. Put the wheel away for the season after that.
Esper
I have about 1200 miles on the ninebot c+ and 600 miles on the tesla. Many crashes, not all with injuries. Ninebot C+ Pothole, 3rd day riding. I was going really slow, no protection. Sudden bump, scared the shit out of me so I bailed. no injuries wheel bounced a few times, no big damage. A few months in, lost control while riding in the snow covered streets. I was live streaming on facebook. scratched my hand a little. low speed crash. Too much speed with bump in street. I was trying to get to a bus and was accelerating too much. dismounted after small bump, no injuries, battery flew out of the side, broken side panel. Tesla Crashed crossing a street due to 3 inch difference in the road grade (they were doing road work, one side was new, the other was old. Slid off had wrist guard no injuries. small scratches on wheel. Crashed while accelerating off a curb on my way home from the bus stop. (2 blocks to home) crashed on landing, fell really hard, injured my palm with scratches. tesla resulted in some scrapes and a bent pedal. Crashed from what appeared to be nothing after I inspected the sidewalk. Could have been from a minor change of elevation and my bodyweight wasn't placed right on the wheel which made it change speed and I lost balance. Literally 5 minutes later and 2 blocks away from the above crash, I again crashed. Big wtf moment for me. This one was due to an inspection cover in the road that has sunk due to the rising grade of the street. the potholes these make are about 4-6 inches across with a 2-3 inch depth. I feel lucky that none of my crashes were serious, but they have opened my eyes as to the danger of riding in a city plagued with construction projects. After I sold my tesla I decided to go with something safer until the city I work in finishes their construction and fixes the roads.
Boogieman
Ninebot mini plus 1. Wanted to see if I could make it cut out. Drove max until tiltback (18km/h about), slowed down just until tiltback disappear and then full lean forward (reached 23km/h shortly in app.. So around 20 real speed). One wheel cutout and threw me off sideways. Just some pain in hipbone as I ran off but took a small fall after a few steps (hard to run sideways lol). 2. Was trying to learn how to make wide skids with both wheels in gravel. Worked fine up to about 15km/h but went for max (beep and tiltback timed) as a last try and ninebot said NO and threw me off sideways. Landed in partial grass/gravel but still elbow + knee bleeding and hand cuts Tesla (had it two weeks, 170km) 3. A guy sitting on the ground next to bicycle road suddenly jumped up and stepped right into my path without looking just as I was about to pass. I hit him dead on in maybe 25-30 km/h and tumbled past him as he fell. Luckily wearing helmet, gloves and knee&shin pads, but no elbow pads (still looking for a good set). Even though the guy slowed me down, severely bleedy elbow and cut on arm (probably the guys nails as it's kind of infected). Phone in rear pocket took an S shape design ? but still works like a charm and no cracked glass (not an iPhone ) but my hip bone hurts on the same side where the phone was in my pocket. The guy did not seem to get any injuries and excused himself (I got "a bit" irritated and asked what he was thinking). Of course I should have slowed down too but I never thought that he could get from sitting to standing right in the path in less than a second ? will buy any elbow protection tomorrow even if not perfect, since I just healed the other elbow from my previous ninebot crash. Tesla still taped up with protection, GoPro mounted and usb cable in the tesla & camera socket, but no damages visible.. Not even broken usb connectors. Funny though, I recently wrote about people not giving a shit about looking, but still I acted as if some people do. From now on I will ALLWAYS slow down when passing anything that might move....animal, man, car, bicycle (hmmm ok I have to be able to overtake, so not always I guess)....AND buy elbow pads and some kind of signalling device... Or just scream like a lunatic when about to pass people ?
Esper
@Boogieman It is a good idea to slow down around people. Humans are the most erratically moving creature on the planet.

mrelwood
I always wear motorcycle gear, bicycle helmet with a chin guard, and wrist support gloves. 1) Wet mud, about 20km/h. Slow fall, no pain. 2) Sinking gravel, about 20km/h. Hit my shoulder, hand was almost useless for a day, still slight pain in rare positions a month after. Prominent scratches in the helmet and chin guard, and other gear as well. Always assume the worst, both from people / other animals as well as from the road. Riding at 30km/h or more without protection is plain stupid under any circumstance.
Tatmandu
Four weeks ago, full gear, full face mtn bike helmet, motorcycle jacket, wrist guards, knee shin pads. Was taking my nightly ride around town. Just before I took off I noticed only four lights on my ks14s. I thought damnit, I forgot to charge it up. So, instead of just calling it off for the night, I decided to just take a small short slow cruise. I was on a smooth new asphalt road doing some slow slolems when I decided to do some power braking and taking off, like a moving pendulum, not realizing how much strain that was putting on the machine. That lasted about a full city block then she cut out on me. I’m a motorcyclist mtn biker rollerblader and have never had any severe injuries. I’ve been hit by a car on my motorcycle, wiped out numerous times on my dirt bike and mountain bike, so far so good. Believe me when I say, there is no time to react when these things cut out. Run offs are totally different and we’re prepared for those, but this was different. You’d think I would’ve come out ok with all the gear I had on and only going about 10mph. I actually did start to react and go into a roll on my left side but my shoulder ended up digging in too hard and that’s when my attempt at a roll stopped short. I ended up with a broken shoulder( top of the humorous, not funny). So, here I sit, about to wrap up four weeks, out of work till who knows when and looking forward to physical therapy. I can’t imagine what it would’ve been like with less or no gear, shredded. Nothing else on my body was effected so all that other stuff I was wearing worked like a charm! I’m looking at getting a motocross style upper body jacket as my Scorpion mesh jacket just failed me in the shoulder area. Oh yeah, my wife was sleeping and her phone wasn’t on so I had to ride it back home, very carefully and slow holding my arm up with my other arm. A night I’ll never forget!
