Honestly I've not heard of either happening on here. One guy was attacked by a group in a car bit I think there were other social issues at work there. They smashed his wheel up but didn't take it. Personally I've not worried about this. I ride in average/decent areas and never leave my wheel unintended in public. That seems to have been fine.
