What apps do you use?

Recommended Posts

I am curious what apps you all use while riding.  I've watched some videos that have verbal announcements of speed and distance traveled.  Are they phone apps?  Or stand-alone GPS's?

I have several extra Android phones laying around.  So I am looking for some good apps to use.

I was originally planning on just using "My Tracks" but that only records the path taken  Next I thought about using "DailyRoads Voyager".  It records video/audio/GPS (I think it will playback the path, but not overlayed on the video).   But I am sure there are some better apps.

Thanks.

Runtastic Road Bike is the one I use most, I even paid for the upgrade, but I am trying out Endomondo as the premium version is free for a year with my S5 and it works with my Pebble Time watch.

I use Open GPS Tracker and Pebble Bike, both on android and mostly for recording my tracks. While that works fine, I could not find any GPS based speed display reliable enough to dare driving my Msuper (MS) much beyond the 28 km/h beeping. As I am also not brave enough to look at my smartphone or a wired bike computer down at my wheel, the upper 10%-15% speed range of my monster wheel remain cowardly unexplored by me -_-

The first manufacturer to bundle a fast wheel with an accurate realtime speed display where I can see it (like smartwatch or goggle display) has me hooked...

I use Runtastic Mountain Bike on Android and paid also.  Not sure what the difference is with the "Road Bike" version that @Gimlet uses.

Thanks, everyone.  I am checking out those apps.

If anyone else has any suggestions feel free to add them.

This summer I bought a Fitbit Pulse HR to track fitness and activity.  It allows mapping of your activities via GPS inside the app and web app supplied with it.   You can drill down to individual exercise sessions and see your pace, elevation changes, heart rate, etc.   I have no idea if it is any better or worse than any other GPS tracker.

I'm not sure what the difference is either John. They look the same to me.

Started looking at 'LocaToWeb' because it can plot your ride on the web so others can observe you but I decided to look further as I'm not yet in the habit of paying for apps!:P
In the end, I went with 'My Tracks' as it is a Google product & free!
Certainly works OK & does what I want/need.

in another thread I saw that http://www.dashware.net/ is now free, its a windows application to combine video with logged data from other sources. I have several ideas besides the EUC to use it (car track day for example), so what apps do you use to gather other data than GPS?
I will take a look at the Google Tracking app (they should be pros in tracking people, right?)

Although this isn't exactly what the thread was started for, I was playing around last night on both my phone & laptop and found this:

In Google+, there is a location feature which can be used to track your movements - Google use both mobile phone masts & inbuilt phone GPS for various aspects of their applications.  Within Google+, you can allow certain people to have access to this information, I haven't tried it yet but hope to by the end of the weekend.

My thinking is that while we on here, love to be out riding our Eucs, we also have loved ones like wives, Mum's etc. who could be concerned for our where-abouts - by allowing your location info to be seen by certain authorised people only, this would give peace of mind to others & ourselves.

OK, so I've finally found that the principle of the idea works. Connecting on Google+ & authorising the sharing of location data with specific people means they can monitor your progress.

So far, I think I've found that it takes coordinates every 4 minutes when it knows you are moving, I don't yet know if this can be changed to be more frequent.

I am using mæp / maep for jolla

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=1474745#post1474745

It has a feature where it can display and save a track. The track is saved as a raw gpx file. This should allow the track to be imported into other mapping application.

What I like about this software is

  • It is free and open-source (free as in freedom, not referring to gratis)
  • It doesn't send your data to the internet
  • you can choose between many different maps (11 different, among these, OpenStreetMap I and II, open cycleMap, Google Maps, Virtual Erarth (microsofts))
  • It is easy to use using one hand with the included (+)/(-) buttons to zoom (besides pinch zoom)

Unfortunately, Google Tracks has been "deprecated." Enjoy it now, because it will no longer work after April 30, 2016.

I've switched to "Geo Tracker."
