Oh I don't know.  Maybe I could save the galaxy from the evil Death Star, free the princess, and help find Luke Skywalker?   :w00t2:  Didn't you even watch the movies???!  :efef2e0fff:

  But but it's just sooooOOOoooo cool!  With both of them (BB and R2)  I can now recreate scenes from "The Force Awakens" and have them twittering and tweeping all over the place to confound that darn bunny!  Yeah I know.  It's a $40 hunk of rolling plastic.  But it's so iconic!!!

This Millenium Falcon is pretty cool too!  :w00t2:

  Dang I was out of my mind yesterday and purchased an Oculus Rift VR setup for $404 CAD since there is a 10% off sale using a referral code.  There’s a last minute sale going on until December 30th.

I don’t even have a gaming PC to use this with.  Carriage before the horse?  Yup.  Oh well, gotta find a good gaming laptop / PC now!  Welcome to my first world problems!  Hello VR-porn!  :dribble:  Oh yeah baby!

Heh, you must have really wanted it.  I don't even think of a sale as a sale yet, at 10%.

Gaming laptops to go with it can be a bit pricey.  I'll be interested to see what you get.  Best to really shop around, as the consumer ratings on those things can be all over the map.

I always wanted a SSD, but wouldn't get one unless it was a two-disc system, as games these days are taking up a freakish amount of disc space, and common SSD sizes can get used up in a few games now, amazingly enough.

I saw a gaming laptop on sale for $750 CAD at the Microsoft store, but they’re sold out!  :crying:I also realized it only had a GTX 1050ti and that not all lappies will work with the Oculus Rift so I might have to buy a more expensive one that specifically works with the Rift.  :cry2:  VR-porn will have to wait!  Why do these things have to be so complicated!  :furious:  In the good ol’ days you’d just grab a magazine, some Lubriderm, tissues, and you’d be all set!

Unless you specifically need a laptop, it would probably be cheaper / get more bang for the buck by building a high-end gaming desktop computer instead. When the time to upgrade comes, you'd likely get away just with upgrading the GPU, if there's otherwise enough memory and fast enough CPU. Plus you can fit more SSDs and/or large "traditional" HDD there for storing more stuff, with laptops its a bit pain since you usually can fit only one disk there.

You have described essentially what I did. My tech savvy sons handed me a shopping list. I then went to the Microcenter (computer retail store in US) and purchased all the needed components to build a substantially powered gaming PC. Overall, I spent about 2500 USD for everything. My son's then built two gaming PCs. This was over three years ago. They still use the PCs frequently for gaming and work. Most of their games are simply downloaded from Steam.

The resolution and frame rates that they get on their PCs, even from games with rich graphics is impressive. Consoles simply cannot match it.

The fact that I still access media on my television through a PS3 console evidences their lack of interest in console gaming platforms.

True, though 17 inch laptops often have an option for a second hard drive.

I haven't been close to a techie for a long time, but considering how small SSD's are, my recollection is that the best set-up would be a SSD with little or nothing but the operating system on it, and a HDD or second SSD for games/programs and to store your files on.

Yeah a PC is a solid way to go, but I was hoping to have some portability with the VR  setup to use it in the living room, at friend’s houses, and ahem in the bedroom on occasion.  :whistling:  Lugging around a desktop PC isn’t all that convenient, but I might still go that route.  It’s probably the best for compatibility.  I haven’t tried the Rift, but if it’s somewhat similar to the HTC Vive Pro it should be lots of fun!  :w00t2:

Good grief this trip into VR is a money pit!  :pooping:  I guess the Oculus Rift comes with only two sensors so there can be “dead spots” so I bought the accessory Touch package for an additional $139!  The extra sensor by itself costs $79 CAD so may as well get the package for a bit extra as it comes with two extra controllers, the sensor, and a Guitar Hero VR adapter.

Steam also has a sale on for VR games so I ended up spending another $110 on some cool titles like Arizona Sunshine, Star Trek Bridge Bridge Crew, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and a bunch of others.  :w00t2:  I’m on a spending spree!  Oh well it’s only money and then you die so why not enjoy it while you can, right?  This should get me through the winter semi-intact!

Ah the price of pork bellies!

I got my Sphero R2 today just in time for Christmas, and it is insanely fun!! :w00t2: And trust me I know insane!  I love this thing.  It’s so detailed, and it behaves just like the real deal from the movies.  There’s a mode where the droid and BB8 will actually interact with each other on their own when they are in “sleep” mode.  It’s really cool!

Plus I managed to install Star Trek Bridge Crew on my friggin Nvidia Shield!!!    Well not exactly ON the shield, but in the Steam launcher through Nvidia Geforce Now so it’s on their game streamer server.  The Shield is the best under $200 gadget I’ve ever bought!  I even bought The Rise of the Tomb Raider on Steam to play on the Shield since I’ve played the free one almost twice now.  This free usage of Nvidia’s high end remote systems is crazy.  I still need to get a gaming system for the Oculus, but this streaming gaming is pure awesomeness!

I have a Minix air mouse (has keyboard on back) to use as a pointer with my shield, and it worked fine with the non-VR mode on Bridge Crew.  @WARPed1701D it’s actually quite fun playing with strangers. Okay that sounded weird, but the guys I had on my crew knew what they were doing, and we had a blast (literally!).  The Shield gaming controller has a microphone built in so you don’t even need a headset, but I did use my BT Bluedio Turbine headset to reduce echo.

This has got to be the best Christmas I’ve ever had in quite some time!

Congrats on your new droid! I must say you do have an assortment of toys. I can’t imagine what interactions you have planned. ;) Merry Christmas Hunka!

That's the awesomeness of the whole thing. Sort of like riding your wheel with strangers. :D

Thanks!  It’s the little things in life that bring me the most joy and that I’m thankful for.  I still watch my old Sony Trinitron tube TV which still works after 20 some years.  I also have an old Samung 32” LCD TV which broke down, but after replacing a single capacitor is now my gaming TV.  I saved it from the landfill!  :w00t2:

I don’t have a lot of toys, but some do seem to be worth their weight in gold!

Well I bit the bullet and got this pre-made system:

https://www.amazon.com/CYBERPOWERPC-Xtreme-GXiVR8060A5-i5-8400-GeForce/dp/B0757DVF4Z

Not the highest spec’d PC, but it should suffice.

  • i5 8400
  • 8 gb ram
  • 120 ssd, 1 TB HD
  • GTX 1060 3 GB video
  • Gotway style Nikola LED lighting :w00t2:which I probably will never see since I’ll be in VR all the way baby!!

I didn’t feel like putting together my own system since I’d probably go overboard and want highly rated components.  If this thing works for most games in VR that’s all I care about.  I’m not going to be going all competitive gaming any time soon.  It was $1099 CAD plus taxes.

So for VR it was about a little over $1800 CAD with the games, PC, and Oculus Rift setup with extra third sensor and spare controllers.  Yeeks maybe I should have just gone to the local VR arcade and plunked down a few hundred dollars to get it out of my system.    It should be fun though to have it all at home to play around with.

Holy rainbow! Makes the Nikola look conservative and restrained.

Enjoy your setup! Just don't forget, your Tesla is warmly smiling at you when you're not looking, silently watching over you, trying to keep the winter madness away. Make it easy for the little guy and ride it once in a while... even if it's just a minute indoors;)

Ahhhh  I don't need any holes in drywall crashing into things at home.  At least the PC (hopefully) isn't trying to kill me like those devilishly dangerous one wheeled devices!  :o

Star Trek Bridge Crew has been a lot of fun even not in VR, but yesterday I had a chance to play with two apparently plastered Star Fleet crew members who must have dabbled in the Romulan Ale a little too much.  LOL the Captain was drunk, the engineer was drunk.  Only the tactical and helmsman (me) were coherent.  We did fight off a barrage of enemy Klingon battlecruisers and birds of prey which was fun.  @WARPed1701D - I definitely see what you mean when you mentioned that some players can be a bit much to tolerate!  We also had a game with one guy at the helm who didn't respond to commands or even try to get the ship moving.  We died horrible deaths when the star near us went supernova.    Whoops!

It’s only the 3 GB version, but it seems to run pretty close to it’s 6 GB bigger brother.  I won’t be playing anything super graphics intense so I’m hoping it should be fine for a while.  GTX 1070’s go for $400!  I might upgrade later on if need be.

I’m super excited to get my setup running!  :w00t2:  VR is so much fun.  If you haven’t tried it you’re missing out!
