Finn Bjerke Posted May 16 Posted May 16 Helmets are expensive and we need a new one every 3 years since the old self destructs? Is that an urban myth? A *ommunist lie? *onservative *ropaganda? Liberal antiscientific nonsense? The politics of higher profits plain and simple? Why cant this bloody expensive brainprotector live a little longer? I dig CARBON STUFF.......Actually Im sort of carbon based myssef. I like brains too. I find it hard to believe that helmets are so shortlived and expensive. 1 Quote
Cerbera Posted May 16 Posted May 16 (edited) I would guess 'absolute horseshit'. Who are the people telling us this - is it 'helmet manufacturers' by any chance ? I'll be using the same helmet until it gets properly banged in a crash ! Might replace the padding if it ever gets less snug on me but I expect any helmet to keep going until it saves my head one day ! And if you've spent several hundred quid on one, that doesn't seem an unreasonable expectation to me. Edited May 17 by Cerbera 1 1 Quote
alcatraz Posted May 17 Posted May 17 The manufacturers might have a real reason to claim that but the question is if you want max safety or 90%? I'm pretty sure you get to 90% with cheap garbage and then you just spend for tiny fractions of added safety. It's enough to produce examples where it would have helped. But if expensive helmets would be way better the cheap ones would be illegal or widely critisized. 1 Quote
alcatraz Posted May 17 Posted May 17 (edited) If we halve the speed limit we might save a life. That family might argue that halving the speed meant the difference between life and death. Does it mean we should? It's up to everyone to decide for themselves. Edited May 17 by alcatraz Quote
Funky Posted May 17 Posted May 17 My helmet is 3 years old right now.. Yet because i'm using it maybe once a month, when i go for a "fun" ride. It looks completely new, fresh right out of box still. (I haven't even washed paddings once yet..) I don't plan buying another helmet anytime soon. And if i don't crash on those "fun" rides and damage the helmet - i will be keeping it for rest of my life. 200-300$ isn't a lot of money, i simply see no point of buying something, if old one is doing it's job just fine.. I'm rarely using it anyways.. Quote
Popular Post Hellkitten Posted May 17 Popular Post Posted May 17 It’s because a lot of the foam padding inside will breakdown over time due to sweat, uv light and regular wear and tear. I work with foams, rubber and plastics for a living. They really do have a lifespan. I’m certainly no helmet manufacturer, but I think they’re covering their asses and having the added benefit of replacement sales. Probably buying a duplicate liner and pads would refresh an older helmet. 2 1 1 Quote

Probably buying a duplicate liner and pads would refresh an older helmet. Of course things will break down in time, but how much time is the question. Perhaps it's because I wear a lycra balaclava under mine that after a year or so my padding so far shows no sign of wear at all, nor does anything else about the helmet, except the visors, which have a few minor scratches. Perhaps in 3 years things will be different, or I may just feel like it's time to try a new helmet anyway, but I don't like being advised that things become useless after arbitrary time periods when there is physical evidence to the contrary... Let's not forget that Begode recommending changing out the battery packs on their wheels every year ! Who TF is actually gonna do that ? Nobody. Edited May 17 by Cerbera Quote
Hellkitten Posted May 17 Posted May 17 Oh don’t get me wrong. I’m not throwing out any of my helmets! 🤣 Quote
Frolic0415 Posted May 17 Posted May 17 3 years? Nope, 10 years? Yup. Also if you crash at all the helmet is a goner and needs to be replaced, even if it's only a few days old. Quote
Roadpower Posted May 17 Posted May 17 If you crash and your crusty helmet fails to protect you, you're going to feel stupid! Quote
Funky Posted May 17 Posted May 17 Good thing i don't use any helmet on daily commutes.. So i won't feel stupid. Quote
alcatraz Posted May 18 Posted May 18 Imagine what the person wearing a helmet while riding on a bus said after they were in a crash. It means that there will never be a lack of tragic stories out there and there will also never be a lack of paranoid overprotective people. I guess we simply have to decide for ourselves and not believe big brother. 1 Quote

I’ll probably give my helmets 10 years. Plastics de-gas and become brittle over time; probably the styrofoam as well. it would be nice to know how much % efficiency was left after X years, so to make an informed decision oneself. Test it on yourself, or if you are scared - buy two melons and a bat, put one melon in old helmet and one in new - go nuts. See if old one cracked more and way easier than new one. Quote

on one Posted May 18 Posted May 18 Some helmets have a shattering layer that might only be protective for a certain period of time. I found this out one day when I was testing one of my helmets by throwing on the ground to see how much impact it could take. On my hardest throw the inside layer of the helmet shattered. Go figure... Quote
sbb Posted May 19 Posted May 19 In this case, you'd need a new helmet the very same day you clicked, "BUY". Quote
