Does anyone use arm signals when turning on a EUC?

Recommended Posts

After riding on a bike path and turning left onto another path, I noticed a few seconds later a bike zoomed by right after.  In hindsight, I was thinking if they were trying to pass me on the left, and I suddenly veered left we would have collided pretty badly.  Thinking about that I was thinking of maybe in the future doing a quick shoulder check and an arm signal (like they teach for bikers) to indicate my turning intentions.  Does anyone one else do this sort of arm gesture routinely?  On a EUC, there's not much of an indication of what direction you'll be turning in plus sometimes the wind rushing past the ears blocks sounds of vehicles and quiet bikes coming up behind you.  I also find it a little hard to turn my head much to look back as it makes me change direction a little.

I wonder if doing a little turn signal amber light mod with remote hand control might be worth looking into.  I remember reading that someone had a crash with a bicyclist which damaged their EUC.  Usually bikes passing will call out "on your left" just to give a heads-up, but I've also had some zoom right past without notice.  My peripheral hearing is good, but not that great directly behind me.

I always signal my intention to turn and do a shoulder check when on the road or bike path.

edit:

I never encountered the signs in your picture for stopping or right turn, I just stretch my hand in the direction of the turn.

I routinely signal before turning, but also learned not to rely on such gestures from fellow bicyclists. Quite a fare share of them seems to have a rather suicidal approach to signaling or right of way rules and give a sh*t with red lights. My tail light doubles as a brake light (inertia sensor).

Only time I use hand gestures to indicate braking is at 'skate-by-night' group rides. We've been told to raise arms to alert followers when the whole group is coming to a stop. Otherwise a tight group of 1000-2000 skaters, inliners and wheelers could end up in a pretty spectacular pile of bodies...
