What?

I know this is late but to the OP I have heard about this problem with the wheel taking off. It happens when the motor is installed backwards.

Yep, Chooch even showed folks how to do it on a video, not great for the decor istr!

If I am not mistaken, the 80/90-12 tire is a bit larger than the 3.00-12 tire.

It of course varies by tire model, but usually 3.00-12 is larger. 80/90-12 is especially noticeably less tall.

3.00-12 vs 80/90-14:

3.00-12 vs 80/90-14:

Typo? You meant to type 80/90-12?

Assuming that was a typo, then I may have been mistaken since you are showing a counter-example. In your example, the 3.00-12 is a knobby, whereas the 80/90-12 is a cross-trek/rain tire for pavement.

3" = 76.2mm  <  80mm.  Not sure why a 3.00-12 tire would be wider than a 80/90-12 tire.

I do see that the 3.00-12 tire would have a larger overall tire diameter than a 80/90-12 tire.

In any case, good to know. Thanks.

(1) 3.00-12: both the tire section height and tire width is 3" = 76.2mm.

     3" x 2 + 12" = 18" overall diameter.

(2) 80/90-12: the tire width is 80mm, and the tire section height is 80mm x 90% = 72mm.

      80mm x 90% ÷ 25.4 x 2 + 12 = 17.67" overall diameter

Interestingly enough, I just measured the width of my 2.75-12 tire. It is 72mm or 2.83". Tire was mounted and inflated. So it's 2 mm over the rated width.

He was just giving example.. The 80/90 tire in picture is K66, which are not been made in 12".

No, it was just to compare the tire widths. Those were the only relevant examples I had.

In the motorcycle world it seems that more than the actual precise measures, the size classifications represent certain size groups and styles. Just like a 16” EUC can have a specified tire width from 1.95” all the way to 3”, affecting the actual outer diameter by quite a bit. And some 2.75-14” tires fit the V11, and some not even close (SR244).

Now that’s an actual typo! ;) You switched the “width” and “height” around. But your calculation is correct!

And most 16x3” and 18x3” tires are around 2.7” wide… Btw the rim width also affects the installed tire width (and outer diameter).
