How to clean dust or salt residue from your rim / motor enclosure?

Any advice on how to clean / remove stubborn dust, mineral or salt residue from your rim / motor enclosure? Thank you. The wheel was not in use for some time due to flat tire and while awaiting arrival of replacement inner tube I'm trying to clean it up as much as possible without causing any damage to the motor casing or rim.

Looks like you have some pitting action going there….I would sand those spots with 120 grit sand paper, scuff the whole thing with 220. Then wipe the whole thing down with mineral spirits. Let dry.  Then give it a couple coats of your favorite color of good rattle can spray paint. You could use primer first if you want to get really crazy.
