Trump spurred ‘existential crisis’ at Fox News, lawsuit exhibits show

For years, Fox News executives and hosts cultivated a close relationship with Donald Trump.

But after he lost the 2020 presidential election and turned his back on the network — inspiring many once-loyal viewers to do the same — the relationship curdled.

And the ensuing pressure caused tension, second-guessing and infighting within Fox on the scale of an “existential crisis,” as one senior executive called it, a cache of internal communications released Tuesday as part of a $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit indicates.

“We are very, very close to being able to ignore Trump most nights,” prime-time host Tucker Carlson texted a colleague on Jan. 4, 2021. “I truly can’t wait.”

Carlson, who had shared private meetings with the president and defended him on-air, added in a text: “I hate him passionately. … What he’s good at is destroying things. He’s the undisputed world champion of that. He could easily destroy us if we play it wrong.”

The materials unveiled Tuesday included a large selection of exhibits mentioned in past legal motions that have generated headlines and controversy for the network.

Internal communications and sworn testimony suggest that top executives and hosts privately doubted the veracity of election fraud claims even as Fox continued to air them — which Dominion argues was motivated by fear of losing Trump-supporting viewers.

Grand Jury Votes to Indict Donald Trump in New York

Mr. Trump will be the first former president to face criminal charges.

The precise charges are not yet known, but the case is focused on a hush-money payment to a porn star during his 2016 campaign.

This is what will happen when Trump is arrested.

He will be fingerprinted. He will be photographed. He may even be handcuffed.

And in the coming days, the former president of the United States of America will be read the standard Miranda warning: He will be told that he has the right to remain silent and the right to an attorney.

US warship sails near man made Chinese-controlled isle in S.China Sea

BEIJING, April 10 (Reuters) - A U.S. Navy destroyer sailed near one of the most important man-made and Chinese controlled islands in the South China Sea on Monday, in a freedom of navigation mission that Beijing denounced as illegal.

While the United States frequently makes such voyages to challenge China and other states' territorial claims in the strategic waterway, the latest one took place as Beijing staged more war games around Taiwan.

The US Navy’s 7th Fleet said the USS Milius engaged in “normal operations” within 12 nautical miles of Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands, once a reef submerged at high tide and where China has built an airport and other facilities.

“Under customary international law ... features like Mischief Reef that are submerged at high tide in their naturally formed state are not entitled to a territorial sea,” the 7th Fleet said in a statement.

“The land reclamation efforts, installations, and structures built on Mischief Reef do not change this characterisation under international law.”

China’s People’s Liberation Army said the US ship had “illegally” entered waters near the reef without Chinese approval, and its forces had monitored the vessel and warned it.

Beijing asserts it has rights to more than 80 per cent of the South China Sea, whose other claimants are the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Brunei.

The US refuses to recognise China’s claims, and regularly conducts what it calls freedom-of-navigation operations to challenge them.

The US announcement also came as China’s military said it had begun a third day of military drills around Taiwan amid growing tensions between China and the US in the region.

The exercises, involving aircraft and ships near Taiwan, came after the island’s president, Tsai Ing-wen, returned from a visit to the US, which included meetings House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other US politicians.

I agree with you Joe, many of the issues Roy brought up in his monologue are an embarrassment for our country.

Systemic racism, inequality of the sexes, faux news…many many things to work on.

Lets hope the “black lash” from two terms of a President of color was just one step backwards on the road to a more just society.

Best,
