Popular Post winterwheel
On Friday (New Year's Eve) at noon we will be heading out on what I'm guessing will be the world's coldest group ride, with a projected high for the day to be -27c. It looks like we'll have at least five participants.

Tawpie
Goodness. Frostbite checks every kilometer? That's damn COLD to be outside... much less outside and in motion. Have fun, glad I can't join ya!
level9
Yikes! You probably already know this living in Edmonton but be careful.. battery performance really falls off the cliff in extreme cold. Enjoy the ride and stay safe! 18650 Li-ion performance under various temperatures https://batteryuniversity.com/article/bu-502-discharging-at-high-and-low-temperatures Edited December 30, 2021 by level9
supercurio
Yeah make sure to wait for a while for the cells to warm back up indoors, before charging once back! (just in case they go below 0℃ in the process)
winterwheel
We're all experienced winter riders, this is just the first time we've set out to do an ultra-cold weather ride as a group thing. winterwheel
I'm using the rs for winter riding (sorry for the terse response, I was out and about and just responded quickly from my phone) I like the RS for winter riding because the pedals ride low and I feel like that gives me a lot more stability in low traction situations. Popular Post winterwheel
A last minute time change reduced the group from six to four, and then one of the four exhausted his battery riding to the start point, so then there were three, my RS and two V11s. The two V11s had actual winter tires, my RS is still running the summer rubber. The high temp for the afternoon was -26c (-14f). The roads are super slippery in many spots with an even snow base having been polished to a cold slippery white-ice sheen by auto traffic. The bike paths were all clear though, in many cases down to the pavement, in others with just enough snow to make for excellent traction. We did 16 kms (with a break in the middle) no serious issue. We could have done much more, all the wheels were 75-80% at the end. One of the riders reported that he got 25 kms out his V11 in the same conditions earlier in the week. The one technical issue was with the V11s, the electronics got cold enough that bluetooth would no longer connect on either one. The RS didn't have the same issue. EUC world reported the temp on my wheel as 12c at the end of the ride. After a brief respite cold temps are expected to resume next week so we might have another go. (For me five is the minimum number of participants for it to count as a group ride.) The people who missed out today would have been riding a Sherman, an S-18, and a 16X. It would be interesting to see how they hold up under similar conditions. Also, there was one minor unplanned dismount when we ventured onto the roads for the last portion of the ride. Paul A
Can't see if there is any hazards under the snow cover though. Any incidents of snow sliding off rooves onto people? Trees, branches toppling over under the weight of accumulated snow? A fridge would be a food warmer......
Tawpie
Sounds like a very successful outing. Still though, I remain quite happy to not have participated! Y'all are inspiring.

FerdinandK
And I thought my 10km at -10C have been a heroic act ... surprisingly my problem area (feet getting cold) have been my boots ...
winterwheel
It was a very low drama day actually. While cold, it was still a beautiful sunny day and riding conditions otherwise were almost perfect. Keeping the toes warm is the biggest problem to solve when riding as the feet are basically immobile for the duration of the ride.

FerdinandK
That would be the way to go, DC-DC Converter and powering the socks by the main battery! (12V I already have on the front lights)
