Popular Post Menace
Heres an article about a thai police training video demonstrating the potential of EUCs in police work. It even has the video there, it's a bit cheesy but still cool. Sorry if this has already been posted. https://www.robhitch.com/micromobility-blog/thai-police-using-electric-unicycles-eucs-to-apprehend-suspects Edited July 30, 2021 by Menace
Dgar
I don't know whether to laugh, cry or what? I've kind of wondered if they can be used to chase someone down but it just didn't seem practical enough. All they have to do is jump a 2ft barrier and the police would have to abandon the EUC. For patrols it might work but as soon as there is a foot chase it seems it would be pretty easy to out maneuver the EUC.
mhpr262
I cant imagine this will ever be a thing ... the risk of injury for the officer and bystanders would be too high, and too much training would be needed for this to be really effective in crowds or in airports/venues that are packed with people. You'd need to ride at a really good clip through there to overtake a suspect in a short enough time to make the use of the wheel worth it.

AtlasP
An officer on an EUC is more capable than an officer on a bicycle or a horse, and makes sense in similar situations.

Never seen my EUC get 'spooked'. ;-) https://youtube.com/results?search_query=police+horse+spooked Some of those ones with horses freaking out in the middle of protests/riots are particularly bad. It's almost as if an animal that can freak out to loud noises and lots of people and chaos isn't a good fit for a law enforcement vehicle... mike_bike_kite
Personally I think it would work well for the police in pedestrian areas. An Mten3 with special lights would be rather cute. Perhaps better would be a 2 wheel PEV that would allow them to stand still. The extra height would give them a better view and make them more visible. They could cover more ground which is useful if you're on the beat (walking) and it would also make them fairly approachable. If they do have to chase anyone then you have the advantage until they get to a barrier and then you have the choice of carrying the wheel up the stairs or dropping it and continuing the chase fairly fresh. The wheels could be special wheels that have trackers and electronic locks that automatically cut in when the wheel is dropped to the ground. A side benefit would be that the police might see the advantage of them as transport and have to make them legal!

I actually built a full size Dalek for a sci-fi/fantasy show once (Armageddon) but it was on top of a mobility scooter - I had to break canon and made it 4 inches taller than spec. in order to accommodate the scooter and myself. Drew a lot of flak from Dr Who nerds for that one LOL.

This is exactly what happened in Sweden with Segways. The police wanted to use them for patroling, so all of a sudden, 11 years ago, the law was remade to include self-balancing electric vehicles as bicycles. Before that, a bicycle needed to have, by definition, two axles, pedals, and mechanical brakes. This made it "impossible" to legalise modern PEVs, but as soon as there was a benefit to law enforcement, the story changed. (Of course, I don't have proof that these were the actual sentiments and procedings at the time, so take the above with a grain or two of salt.) On the plus side, it might incapacitate the criminal by making them puke. Also, Imagine how embarrassing it would be to get caught by one of them after shoplifting... that would be a punishment in itself.
RockyTop
My daughter is a big Doctor Who fan. I like the show. I just can’t stop thinking that you could defeat the Dalek with steps and two foot wide door openings.

Somewhere in Canada from the mix of French and English on the sign? Do you know what sort of training the officers undergo before patrolling on the EUCs?

I love the idea of police officers patrolling on EUCs. Police take such a bad rap these days. Imagine all of the kids faces lighting up as they encounter these heros on wheels. Horses are great but the officers are sitting 6 feet above the citizens making them not very approachable. 8 hours ago, Menace said: Wow, that's not quite what I had in mind. xiiijojjo
If they start using EUCS we might have to invent an electro magnetic gun that can be shot at their EUCS to make them faceplant. Edited August 1, 2021 by xiiijojjo
