1month in and no padding on the 9Bot

Lots of serious discussions going on here regarding cut offs, firmware, etc, so i thought I'd run a lighter topic past you all.

A month ago I received my 9BO e+ having no clue about ANY WHEEL a week earlier, until I saw one being ridden close to where I live and decided I must have one.

It arrived and a week later with cut up ankles, bruises, aching calves i actually wondered wether Id made a bad decision in getting one...

Perseverance paid off, and although no where near 100% confident, I can now ride in public, hop on and off without issue, and turn left and right without coming off, so for me I think Im gradually getting there. Id covered the thing in padding and tape, worried about getting it damaged, and had to take it all off to repair a flat tyre I had last week.

I forgot how cool it looked without all the padding and decided to leave it all off and ride it "au naturale" so to speak, the funny thing now is that Im riding it "not worried" about damaging it and relaxing more on it, whereas before with it all padded up it was almost like I was expecting it to crash.....all in the head I know.....hmmm

Do you ride with padding?

Have you decided after a while to strip it and go natural?

interested in your thoughts...

Never installed padding, but recently installed Carbon Fiber looking Body Mouldings to the bottom of the foot pads to prevent scratching during sharp turns. Works very well and does not hurt the look in my opinion.  The roll comes with 12 Feet of molding, so I can replace it a number of times whenever it needs it.  Saves me from replacing the foot pad covers... :D

Phil, I did the same thing as you. I am now able to get on, get off. I can do figure 8's, and left and right turns....so about a week ago I scraped off the goo and pink padding.  Yes, 9B1 sent me PINK padding!   I started down the road, after everything was nice and clean, and even a coat of car wax....well I did not get more than 20 feet and a tumble the 9B1 went.

I was able to run off so no damage to me, but the 9B1 tumbled a few times.  Not much road rash, but I thought, OK now I can stop worrying about scrapes.   Actually felt a bit liberated after I checked to make sure there was no damage.

I continue to gain confidence and learn more with each ride (and worry less about tumbles).

Cheers,

Jim

At the end of the day Jim, the thing I like about the 9b0 is that parts are easily changeable, so in the first 12 mths it gets pretty roughed up its nice to know that one can purchase a new shell, LED light ring, and side pads and its just about brand new again..

enjoy your riding

Phil,

I agree.  I am OK with it getting a bit of road rash here and there, and I am definitely much happier without the pink padding!  BTW,  I am amazed at how well it cleans up even after hitting the dirt a few times.

Cheers,

Jim

I had to laugh when i saw the sticker on your bots foot pedal.. This scratch was made from product testing, dont worry :D:D:D my n10 E+ didnt get tested as it has no such sticker...

Maybe you are on to something as I don't have any sticker either.:P

Went out today for a decent ride, well it was for me at about 6km, without all the padding and loved it....the actual padding or lack of it on the sides allowed the Bot to move freelly between my calves which I know sounds like a recipe for disaster, but I must say it added heaps of manoeverability to it.

A week ago I thought about actually making the padding on the sides another 2" thick on each side thinking that it would give a " snug" fit to the calves and a more solid ride, but rather than making it easier to ride it actually "stiffened up" my legs and hips which added tension to my lower half....not good.

Since taking it all off, and riding it "au naturale" Im finding that a little bit of looseness is allowing me to control it heaps better, which is now helping me relax more from the calves to the hips....if that makes sense....

When riding it along roads and paths Id imagine that most of you would feel the unit constantly correcting and moving between your calves, am I right with this type of thinking?

Its helping me a lot anyway...

cheers one and all

I took it off as soon as I know how to go straight. Though I had to put some on the cover to learn how to ride with one leg since the bot will solely rest against that one leg. You had a good point though; after so many times it got scratched, eventually you won't be afraid of scratching it anymore.

Padding still in the bag inside the original wrapper - BUT - the bot is showing severe signs of abuse throughout the learning stage, not only my own but all my friends / colleagues who just had to 'have a go' when they saw me on it ;) !!

Seriously, it will ALWAYS driver better once scuffed up as you'll be less 'precious' about it and take more chance to just 'get it right' instead of worrying unnecessarily about making it look 'used' ???

There's always that 'Vinyl wrap' stuff to cover things up once you've really got the hang of it :D

Yeah, I still have the protective stuff still wrapped up, never used it.  I thought that the battle scars would actually look good on the unit though there are some gouges in the calf pads/battery covers.  BTW has anyone found a cheaper battery replacement so we can swap out batteries?  I'd love to be able to pop in 2 to 3 more battery packs to extend the range as I'd love to go further without recharging.

I guess for me it was just a matter of "not riding scared", not that i was, but probably more worried about scuffing up the 9bot than myself.

Now that its "au naturale" Im actually feeling heaps more confident than i ever was with all the protection...

My advice to new riders of the 9bot would be to tape it up for the first 2-3 weeks then take it all off and begin to just enjoy being "one with the wheel"
