Well how many days of Christmas can you have in a year?  Looking forward to 26th! Best of luck to you and the Sherman. Maybe bring a MTEN3 in a backpack for backup? Loved the rebuilding video, that must have been a really challenging task. What might be the easiest way to check if one has the new updated motor cables? Do one have to take it fully apart in a million bits or is it enough you just check the motherboard under the display?

Carrying a 70-pound wheel on another wheel on a super steep mountain trail would be more work than help 

You can see the motor wires from the motherboard. If they are 12-gauge then you have the improved motor. Determining if they are 12-gauge is very difficult without having a 14-gauge reference. Best ask the dealer where you buy the wheel.

@Marty Backe in your opinion how important is it to have that thicker 12-gauge wiring overall? Is the 14-gauge still a concern or deal breaker?

It's not a deal breaker for me. It represents additional safety margin for when the wheel is used under very stressful conditions. Even when 16-gauge wire was used back in the day, most wheels never failed due to melting wires.

By moving to heavier and heavier gauge wiring, our wheels are capable of surviving greater challenging riding conditions that some of use periodically put our wheels through. I live in a region with mountains and sometimes end up in situations where I need to put the wheel under momentary great stress. I know the same happens with other people throughout the world. It's for those times that I appreciate having the better wiring.

The wires are not going to melt in the vast majority of riding conditions.

I would say only desire the heavier gauge wiring if you periodically push the wheel to such extremes that you have difficulty getting the wheel to move forward because the terrain is so steep.

Knowing how I intend on riding the Sherman, I would have been content with the thinner wires. My experience on Overheat Hill "calibrated" the conditions that this wheel is good for, and I would avoid those in the future with this wheel.

Fortunately, in the United States we don't have to worry about this since the only Sherman's available in quantity are coming from EWheels and will have the better wiring.

My guess is that he won't succeed. On the last run, it didn't look like he had the torque to make it up the steep sections. It was making a weird sound when it started to overload (some suggested it was torque ripple? Or basically a sound when the motor phases--transitioning to the next set of magnets--is breaking down). It would be nice if the wheel noticed it was overheating and go into tiltback (like the 18XL did on overheat hill). IMHO that would be an acceptable outcome. And basically what we are seeing is wheels that are more tuned for speed, and wheels that are tuned for torque, like the MSP speed / MSP torque pair of wheels, and the Sherman seems to be tuned for speed.

As I've mentioned before, Veteran has modified the firmware for more torque and I have confirmed this with my preliminary hill test a few days ago.

I don’t think it’s a Veteran thing, it’s an eWheels thing. Let’s see if they provide older firmware to those who want higher speed.  The motor wire changes are definitely welcome. I’ve become torque happy on this wheel which isn’t a good thing for motor wiring!
