If the thickness of oil varies so greatly, then does oil dampening work all that well?

Never noticed a difference of damping on Fox rears, whether riding in winter or at 33 deg C on the pounding downhills. Even if there were, it's less than a second to wind the damping up or down a notch to compensate :)

This is the link to convert a Fox to Schrader which I think is worthwhile posting at this point. A must mod IMO, and works brilliantly. And worth mentioning for those that are worrying about a small air shock being able to cope with different rider weights and terrain, don't. Static sag should just be set to the same amount irrespective of rider weight, and it's simply a matter of using more or less air to achieve that. To avoid any confusion, the shocks use 2 air chambers. One (for sag) is already a Schrader valve and can be adjusted simply with a pump to suit rider weight. The other chamber is usually sealed (and filled with nitrogen) but the seal can be removed and the below link used to allow full home servicing. Only required of course at the first service and/or if the shock starts 'sucking down'.
