[SOLVED] I think I have a problem with a KS18XL

Last spring I ordered the KS18XL, I tried a few times to ride it but wasn't very successful. So this year I got a Mten3 and have been learning on that. Last week I tried the 18XL again and it cut out twice while I was on it just staying in place. Meaning that it gave up control, it beeped twice and then power to the motor was lost. It did not turn off however.

This immediately worried me not just because of the obvious mechanical failure but because I'm still a very shaky rider with very little confidence. I knew that if I kept trying the 18XL in this condition I risked totally destroying confidence. (Confidence is a topic on to itself but it matters a great deal in life for pretty much everything). So deciding not to try any further I put the wheel away and slept on it. I am pretty sure that the wheel was left at about a 80% charge state and from my reading on the topic I didn't want to go beyond that when batteries are effectively in storage.

After a few days I decided to put the wheel on the slow charger in case it was a low charge issue. The batteries topped off in only a few hours (I wish I didn't do that but I needed to test the wheel in several ways). So tonight I tried the wheel again and again it exhibited the same behavior while just standing in place on it.

Last year when I was trying to learn the wheel I took it to the park where I found an empty child's playground. There all I did was hold on to a pole and rock back and forth, that was the very first time the power lost motor control after about five minutes of rocking back and forth. I assumed at the time that I did something wrong so I decided to call it a day anyway and headed home.

Now I am back to today and I have a $2300 dollar wheel that I now I am wondering if I have a serious issue with and if it needs to be sent back to the vendor for repair. Questions and suggestions would be appreciated.

My first thought was that maybe you held on to the handle, or had a strap tied to the handle. But since your wheel might be of the earlier batch with the pressure sensors, disabling the lift switch will probably solve the issue. If it does, you can try calibrating the lift sensors, which could work well enough that you could then enable the sensors.

If the lift sensors are the issue, you don’t have to worry about riding the wheel. Even if lifted from the handle at above ~4km/h, the motor will not disengage.

It’s definitely the lift sensor being too sensitive and needs calibration. What firmware version you have? Don’t worry, those beeps are exactly the same as from the cut off switch on the handle. Mine has done the same recently. Nothing wrong with your wheel.

Thanks for the replies, I haven't used the EUC World app too many times so it took me a few minutes to figure out how to get it to connect again. In the wheel settings I am seeing the "Riding Mode" options greyed out. I also notice that the Bluetooth is seemingly very short range, it only holds connection within about four feet. This might be due to a heavy RF environment, I'm not sure.

Not sure what to do next but I took some screen shots of EUC World app.

Did you buy your wheel from AliExpress?

No. Are you seeing an issue in the screen shots?

Well, if you have a wheel sold for Chinese domestic market then that would explain why the settings are not supported for you in EUCWorld. Do you have a letter p in your serial number before last three digits?

also, do you have the kingsong app?

I'm not sure where to find the serial number. I bought the wheel from a vendor here in the US. The last time I installed the official Kingsong app was on my old phone last year, it was an atrocious app, I hope it isn't required. I just looked for it now on Google Play and the app isn't even listed.

I just looked at the wheel again, I think I see the number on the pedals. Yeah, it is a B.

There are new apps from KS about to be available:

The android app is just on its way to play store - by now it can only be downloaded from the KS site and manually installed.

For apple (ios) the soft tuner app is available in the app store.

Strangely in your screenshots the serial number is not shown, just a "-". (In your second screen shot at the bottom)

There was once a problem with KS wheels not getting/forgetting the serial number?! This has to be set (to a right value!) so firmware updates and settings are available - without serial number nothing will work...

On the other side, in your last screenshot under Unicycle Health is stated "Serial Number: Valid"!

That's somehow contraticting! Or did you photoshop the serial number out on the sceenshot?

@Seba?

Maybe you have an ios device you can borrow/use to look at the wheel with the soft tuner app?! Afaik with this app also the serial number can be set! Your dealer should be able to support you in the process of getting a valid one. Or @Jack King Song?!

Thank you, no photo editing. I noticed the lack of a number myself. I suppose I have to hope that the official app will have full access. I really don't want to have to resort to shipping the wheel for this condition to be corrected.

Wheel disengaging motor with two beeps is 100% a lift sensor calibration problem. It's common to KS-18L/XL, you can just disable it or contact your dealer for support. But it seems that your wheel doesn't have serial number programmed. This is why your EUC can't be recognized by EUC World app, so settings are not available. You should contact your dealer, he will be able to help you. For me it's just wheel without serial number programmed in factory. It happens, rarely, but happens. This however should be easy to fix by your dealer, even without sending wheel back. If you bought your wheel from eWheels just contact them - i assure that you'll get best possible support.

It's because serial number validity (actually it's integrity) is checked by the firmware, not the app. It's sent as a set of bit flags, so if flag for serial validity is set, EUC World will recognize it as valid. Serial validity is checked in terms of checksum calculated over arbitrary value written as serial. So you could even write "I-LOVE-EUCS", firmware will calculate CRC and will report firmware invalid only if "I-LOVE-EUCS" will get corrupted.

Okay thank you so much for the information everybody, I will contact the vendor and ask how to handle this. It's much appreciated, my imagination was making this issue out to be worse than it appears to be.

:)

I had the same issue on my KS18XL purchased new in February 2020. It was shipped with firmware 1.0. It would beep twice and fall over. Did this around 3-4 times . I purchased my wheel from eWheels. On a thread posted on the forum, @Jason McNeil said

Last year King Song added a 18L/18XL firmware 'feature' to try to prevent the motor from freezing up—this required the Wheel to be opened & disconnected from the power input to the controller. A byproduct of the change, is that occasionally the Wheel will do this random reset, if the controller thinks it's in this frozen/locked condition. When under rotation, firmware suppresses lift sensor input & this reset routine.

I emailed Jason and he said he spoke with a King Song Engineer regarding the above issue. The issue has been resolved in FW 2.0 . Jason advised me to upgrade ,which I did and problem is gone ..

i would check your FW and upgrade . The 2.0 is excellent! :)

confirming that 2.0 fw fixed this issue on my wheel as well...
from time to time I have "wheel disengaging motor with two beeps" for short period of time never while riding it !

after upgrading to FW 2.0 I never see it again....

make sure you calibrate wheel and lift sensor.
(couple good months already passed ever since)

I got the same advice from Jason @ ewheels and upgrading to 2.0 firmware fixed it. As a temporary workaround until 2.0 came, I would just make sure to always be in a little bit of motion, even when holding onto a post or wall for support.

Sorry for the late follow up, just wanted to let people know that the vendor was great. I got the wheel updated to 2.0 which required it be reserialized as for whatever reason the number was somehow corrupted. I calibrated the wheel and disabled the lift sensor. I have only been able to take it on a very short ride which given the frequency of the cut outs, seemed to indicate that the condition has been corrected.

Hopefully this weekend or upcoming week I will be able to test it more.  :)
