So much for trying to protect myself from CV-19. Even though my facility has been screening parents and their children before they enter an exam room I was coughed on twice today.

Yes the parent apologized profusely for not covering their child's mouth in time but unfortunately the atomized respiratory droplets had already sprayed me.

The child did not demonstrate any of the CV-19 symptoms other than an infrequent cough but I was a bit startled by the episode.

You are brave doing this work and strong. You can fight this. Are you going to get testet? Are you keeping your facility going or are you going to quarantine yourself after this scary episode? In normal times we would smile if a child sneezes or coughed at us. But these are not normal times. I hope for you it was just a harmless cold. Be safe.

Many countries and leaders are lagging behind. Certainly here in Europe, many think it is just the flu. This is the case for some, but others become very ill. Unfortunately, before the people believe it is menes, it is usually too late to prevent a disaster. I also notice that in Holland, all restuarant gyms and all kinds of public space are closing. Then there are people who sit together. While the king and the minister say keep a distance of 1 1/2 meters and be safe. But also the cabinet says stay indoors, no social contact - if necessary, take care of parents sick / weak aunt or something. I work in mental health care, so I have to leave home. With my wheel I go to work through the forest, I see the 10-fold walking-cycling-running in the forest as on a normal Sunday. Young people sit together comfortably. Groups of 10 or more people are close together.
That testifies to terrible naivety, if not stupidity!
I can't look at it more than shaking my head.
The province of Brabant is already a source of fire, fear that it is only a matter of time before it looks like Spain here if people do not start to see the seriousness of this virus. Time will tell. Fortunately, I barely saw people on the street today when I wheeled back and forth from work. I wish all wheelers here and their country much strength. And above all a great togetherness and willingness, that egoism may bleed to death in a time like this.

TOSHIO UEMURA: Great respect for your comments here on things people write in response to your post. I admire the spirituality you seem to have. If that is average behavior for the Japanese people, you are a fine society.

Hello friends, I come to give you my testimony on the situation here in my country (im using google translate, apologized for mistakes)

I too had complete confidence in the Japanese people, I think they will succeed in blocking the spread of the virus.
I made long stays in Japan, I was in love with a Japanese woman who was my penpal from the time when intetrnet did not exist, when I was eleven years until my nineteen years.

About COVID19, in France it is a disaster, we are going to have the same situation as Italy. We have the same contamination progression curves a few weeks apart.
The lockdown is not complete: the French are authorized to go out to play sports, so everyone goes out.
Barrier gestures are not respected
Social distancing (> 1 meter) is not respected
A large part of the population respects the instructions, but people are always numerous on the streets, in peri-urban areas
We admire the Chinese lockdown which was very effective
We in France do not have the recommendation to wear a mask.
State mask stocks are empty.
It's an aberration, it's incredible, the priority for wearing masks are the sick and the caregivers.
All of Asia wears a mask.

Le Monde (french nespaper) wrotte: The denigration of the mask in Europe arouses consternation in Asia
The preventive wearing of the mask has helped to curb contamination in developed countries of the Far East, where the call not to wear it in France if you are not sick is seen as a serious error.

We in France, we don't take off the shoes when we get home
All of Asia takes off their shoes when they get home.
Europeans, Americans, you must disinfect the soles of shoes before entering your home and you must wear protective gear

here it was, a small testimony, 頑張って !

PS: I don't know if it has already been posted, but Jack Ma and Alibaba foundation has set up tools (Global MediXchange for Combating COVID-19) for doctors around the world with a "handbook provides comprehensive guidelines and best practices by China's top experts for coping with COVID-19"

This handbook is free to download, only in english & chinese available

I give up... nothing good is going to come of any more of my posts on this issue.

I made long stays in Japan,

Today we finally got news from most private universities that they will stay closed during most of April for now.
I also did some maths and thought about why cases in Japan double every approx. 11 days, while they double every 3 days most everywhere else. Thank you for your thoughts on this.

May be due to the differences in social behavior that I mentioned above, the R0 in Japan is lower than 2, and lower than in other countries.

I'm astonished at the depth, breadth, and speed of the Coronavirus response. It feels our civilization is truly a global 21st century civilization, because scientific information, disease status, and goods and services move at lightning speed. Even the lack of goods has factories producing those missing goods within 12 hours.

I have to disagree with that. From a production/distribution standpoint, yes. But institutional/governmental response is appalling. We had plenty of notice from China and time to prepare, and governments around the globe did nothing. When Italy's numbers of infected started to skyrocket, Spain took no action until the first cases emerged. When contagion started to spike, it still took them a full week to implement lockdown measures, and look at us now: #4 worldwide in terms of cases confirmed and #3 on the death toll list. And we were the second European country to declare a state of emergency and start imposing lockdown...

If you want to know what your country will look like in the weeks to come, look at Italy and Spain as a reference. Or France: When the lockdown was imposed in Spain, France's confirmed cases were in the hundreds. One week later they're 22,000, and now they've finally imposed measures (which are less strict measures than the ones in Spain). Spain's confirmed cases and deaths have been growing exponentially since the lockdown started, because it came too late and the measures were insufficient (and still are). Just wait and watch...

You can always count on those who will profit financially to keep the wheels turning, but protecting lives, if there's no money in it, is a different story altogether...

Thank you very much! I appreciate your kind words. But I am just  normal guy. In my experience this is the behavior of almost all people In Japan that I know and have known. We cherish kindness in our society and it has served us well! And the good news is: Foreigners from other nations who visit or live here in Japan for a while adapt easily to our ways and carry this spirit around the world. They get infected by this kindness.

Let this be the NEW virus! 😊

Culturally and ethically, Japan has nothing to learn from the rest of the world.

In Spain the number of fines for disobeying the quarantine doubles the confirmed cases of infection. Talk about social immaturity...so yes, we do have a lot to learn from the Japanese

I've noticed Chinese people can't count. Historically, Chinese people, from farmers to administrators, are very bad counters, and report 20 tons as 60 tons. And it's rather odd, as those who count are best up by Chinese police, jailed, then publicly apologize for being such bad counters.

So it is with the Coronavirus. Chinese health professionals, who you'd think would be able to properly count, can't seem to correctly count their Coronavirus cases. They would put in a figure in their report, and since that figure wasn't acceptably correct, they'd be beat up, jailed, and publicly apologize (or not).

This inability to count Coronavirus victims allowed the virus to spread everywhere.

Yeah, surely the case... <_<

When it started devastating Italy, myself, my girlfriend, my octogenarian neighbor and her dim-witted son all saw it was a global trend about to spread. Yet our government, apparently, didn't. They had seen what happened in China, and what was happening in Italy, and did nothing. When it started spreading through Spain, the rest of Europe acted the same as Spain did before it hit us. And the US is doing the same thing too. Europe is the worst hit now...yet the US government, despite seeing the global trend, is still failing to react, just like northern Europe did with the virus was devastating only southern Europe, Spain when it was only Italy, and Italy when it was only China.

The WHO declared a global pandemic exactly two weeks ago. Our government declared the lockdown one week later. The rest of Europe is trailing a week behind us, and the US (as a whole, excluding state-wide measures) has yet to issue a lockdown. Every government has had time to take pre-emptive measures and failed to do so, either too short-sighted until it's staring us in the face, or more preoccupied with the economy than with preventing unnecessary deaths.

But you're free to pin it on the Chinese if that brings you comfort...

"The actions of people and governments make the difference between calm and chaos. After the virus is contained, its treatment—or vaccine—hopefully discovered and the media moves on to more shocking stories, we must not forget how much was preventable. Otherwise the same forces and incentives which aggravated the problem will only remain dormant, waiting for the next outbreak and enabled by our disinterest"

When it comes to responses, numbers are everything. The number of people infected along with the speed of infection determines the appropriate level of response, if any.

The Italians were able to determine their own, more accurate, figures over what the Chinese had been publicly stating. Their initial, and inadequate, response was based on the historical infection figures the Chinese gave them. Those figures were a magnitude off (10x), because the Chinese cannot count.

Please, don’t underestimate the rest of the world. 😆

I believe learning and personal and spiritual growth is a very individual thing. Like snakes 🐍 never stop growing until they die, we can grow spiritually and learn and educate ourselves as long as we live no matter what culture we live in, or we can choose to stop learning and start to believe we know it all. That’s when people get stuck in there stereotypes and cliches. When people open their mouths you can look down into their livers. Like a shark that would die, if it stopped swimming, I would die if I would stop learning and growing.

Some of Toshio's statements have rubbed some people the wrong way, I understand where you're coming from, but he's apologized and, AFAICS, isn't intentionally trying to stir up controversy or offend anyone. Can't we, even in a situation like the one we're living (this will hit near home sooner or later, believe me, and the abstract will start to feel much more tangible) make an effort to breach cultural and personal gaps for the sake of a constructive discussion?

I guess human nature is the only thing that's truly global... :(

Hello, to calculate the progression in your country, take the example of HOKKAIDO. This is where has quickly developed contamination..

In Italy the town of Vo’Euganeo is the epicenter of the contamination in Italia, scientists study the process with the inhabitants https://translate.google.fr/translate?hl=fr&tab=rT1&sl=fr&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.liberation.fr%2Fplanete%2F2020%2F03%2F22%2Fvo-euganeo-laboratoire-de-la-quarantaine_1782704

Hokkaido, was a cluster, caused by a festival that attracted many people nationally and internationally. It is now under control and numbers there haven’t changed much over the last week.

In Tokio, OSAKA and some other prefectures the numbers are rising. See for yourself. If you need older data to compare, send me a private message. I do not want to spam this thread with too many photos.

... and of course you are right: testing is key! Japan needs to get more proactive here. And I believe we will, now that the Olympic game card is off the table. Many if not all universities will stay closed through April now. Most people I know are aware of the situation and do their best to suppress the spread even without government orders. Some young people give a sh... similar to the behavior of youngsters in the rest of the world, but they will come around, I guess.

China had to expel all reporters from the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and Time Magazine because those reporters were also unable to correctly count Coronavirus cases.

The NYT had reported that Chinese mayors had placed $140 bounties on Wuhan citizens.

China called other countries xenophobic for closing borders, then closed its own borders by implementing a 2 week quarantine on all foreign visitors.
