Full face helmet: TSG Pass vs Shoei rf-1200

I just got the TSG Pass Carbon fiber helmet. It's impressively light and compact for a full face helmet. The fit, size, and feel is better than the Steelbird. It is 3-4 times the cost of the Steelbird. The paddings are well formed like motorcycle helmet pads. There is a quick release tab for the cheek pads. Comes with both tinted and clear shield. Only negative is the chin strap which use a loop buckle. I prefer magnetic quick release system. I think this is going to be my new regular use helmet for winter riding (until the Klim TK1200 come in). I need the full face shield as the temperature is starting drop in the morning.

How’s the MCM5 compare to the mten? I have the mten is the mcm5 redundant ?

Hey @Darrell Wesh. I cut the shell edge on my MCM5 to accommodate a 2.5" wide tire over the standard 2" tire. It's made the MCM5 more stable at low speed and turning. It's turned the MCM5 to a 14" mten3. Going backward on the MCM5 2.5" is almost as easy as the mten3. I've been using the MCM5 for my daily short commutes instead of the mten3. Before the wide tire, I would say I prefer the mten3.

Oh. The TSG Pass Carbon is my favorite full face helmet. It's so comfortable and light. The visor is great in the rain. I tried a couple motorcycle helmet. They're too bulky. I am not a fan of the TSG Pass D-ring. So I don't buckle it. I might look into modding it to take a magnetic strap clip.

Well not sure if @chrisjunlee will be giving an update of what happened with his shoei helmet, but I'm still debating.  Instead of starting a new thread, thought I'd just post here since this is pretty close to what I was gonna ask.  I'm deciding between a predator DH6x and a moto helmet, the TSG pass is out of stock in size medium everywhere so that's out of the question.

Here's some helmets I'm considering and their weights.  The Pedator DH6x is lightest full face helmet in the world.  The regular version is 900g, carbon version is 875g.  TSG pass is 1020g, and tsg pass pro is 930g.  A motorcycle helmet like Shoe rf 1200 is 1608g, a lighter one like the carbon scorpion EXO 1400 is 1500g.

Predator DH6x: Price is $450 for carbon, $385 for regular.  Certified to skate and Bike standards

http://www.predatorhelmets.com/dh6-x/

Scorpion EXO 1400 moto helmet: $400, certified to DOT standard, and ECE

https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/scorpion-exo-st1400-carbon-helmet

Shoe RF 1200: $400-500 depending on color scheme, this one I like is $430.  Certified to the toughest SNELL standard, however as I research more I'm discovering SNELL would actually cause more harm at all but the highest speed crashes.

https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/shoei-rf-1200-trooper-helmet

And here's a pic of the predator DH6x vs tsg pass  (not mine obviously...found it on fb)

Now that Autumn has rolled in, I ride around in an Arai Defiant-X, mostly because I'm afraid of morons in their metal death machines and what they can do to me.

The way I see it is, sure you can save some weight on a full face helmet, but you gotta think about what you want between your noggin and the ground when you hit it at 30+mph

Personally, I think motorcycle helmets are the way to go, as they have genuine safety ratings (just ignore DOT sticker as it's meaningless)

My SNELL rated Arai will keep me safe at over 100mph, so I know I'm gonna be set. If you ride in a cheap bucket, sure it might protect you 6 months later. But a year or two later and that lid might not do its job. If you like the Shoei, I say get it for safety. Cars be wildin

Hey @photorph. The TSG Pass Pro Carbon runs small compared to the regular TSG Pass. I have a large Pass Pro and it fits me perfectly. My bike helmets are size medium. So if you can't find a medium Pass you should try out the the Pass Pro Carbon in large.

I gave the motorcycle helmet a try (Klim). But it is heavy, FOV is narrow, and feels constricted. DH helmet is the way to go.

I really like my KLIM F5 for the summer. Super vented! And still just as safe!

Nice. I bought and returned the Klim TK1200 modular helmet. For summer riding I have a Troy Lee Stage and POC Coron carbon. I don't recommend the huge POC Coron. I got it on sale and keeping it for backup.

I don't have the Shoei RF1200. But I have tried it on. It's fairly compact for a moto helmet. I guess it would feel nice if you're coming from the motorcycle world typical heavy helmets. But I am coming from biking and it took me a long time adjusting to full frame helmet (starting with the Troy Lee Stage).

All these full face helmet threads are slowly convincing me to go that route.  I do worry of a full face plant which hasn't happen yet, often if I hit something/or a wobble that'll about to throw me off as long I was able to plant a foot forward before I fall it's often my wrists and chest that took the brunt of my spills so far, all the while wering just an open face helmet.

Im often in areas where commercial vehicles and 20ton trucks are more common, I steer the fuxk away even at 10mph those driver's won't see u if u spill next to them is my nightmare scenario, it won't matter if I have a helmet rated at 100mph at that point.

I got the TSG pass and am happy with it but not using it on my commute which involves some time on the train. Dealing with a full face while negotiating stairs. Turnstiles, and strap hanging commuters seems too much. However, most of my riding is my commute so that’s probably where I’ll spill. Still sorting it out. Maybe a helmet bag, I can clip to my backpack when I get on the train.

Oh dear. If you’re hitting your chest on the ground from falls then you definitely need to get a full face and probably rib protection/chest vest.

I'm digging the faux wood treatment on the MCM5. What kind of product is it?

The wrap on the MCM5 is the 3M Di-NOC Marine Teak Wood grain vinyl sheet wrap (4'x2'). It's held up so far.

Just had to try a moto helmet.  So I searched for the lightest full carbon moto helmet, and ended up with this 3k carbon scorpion st exo1400.  Despite being the lightest moto helmet, it’s still ~2x heavier than the predator dh6x or the tsg pass.  It also makes me look like a huge bobble head/alien because moto helmets are just way bigger than mtb bike or downhill helmets.  So definitely not a plus in the looks department when it’s on you.  Moto helmets also run hotter inside and block out more noise vs the downhill skate helmets.

But I’m actually preferring it overall, because it’s just high quality.  The visor is impossible to fog up and the foam inside is much better than the downhill sk8 helmets.  The built in sun visor is handy.

this helmet is a about a 1lb lighter than the shoei RF 1200, but still a 1lb heavier than the tsg pass and even more than a lb heavier vs dh6x.

At this point I’ve not only ridden every wheel in the market, but I think I’ve tested all different kinds of helmets as well.  If anyone has any specific questions feel free to ask.

Your location/riding area is Michigan, right?  What is your average speed/terrain?

So, you're saying you prefer using this helmet over the TSG Pass and the DH6X in any weather or just winter?  :efef50e3ba:

Yep Michigan.  In a group ride usually 25-35 mph.  Otherwise just 20-30 mph.  Usually ride paved roads.

In winter 100% prefer it over those two, in summer...to be determined, may get too hot.

Looks nice and certainly the lightest of the DOT helmets. $400+ though, whew, not cheap...

Kind of curious how it looks when wearing it. Seeing the size alone doesn't give the perspective of how big it looks when wearing it.

Is it just a little larger or full on Bobble-Head.  :roflmao:

For my tiny body..it's full on bobble head.  With a moto jacket it helps a bit, but wearing a t-shirt and helmet, yep full bobble head.  You can definitely feel it is heavier than tsg pass or predator, and bigger.  The foam inside is more substantial as well.

There is a lot of debate about whether moto helmets are actually beneficial for EUCs or not vs lighter helmets such as tsg pass or predator dh6x.  Not enough data to make claims.

I recently got a Scorpion EXO-AT950 motorcycle helmet, as I was looking for something a bit warmer to wear riding in the Winter.  So far I've been really pleased with it.  Has some nice features and I don't feel like it's really all that bulky, especially given that when I'm wearing it I'm already all bundled up in a jacket.  The entire front also flips up, so if I need to stop and talk with someone it's a bit easier.  Venting is solid and the built in sun visor is pretty nice.

Where are people even finding a TSG Pass?  They are out of stock everywhere.

If you have the $$ and want to go full carbon fiber, there is one left on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/TSG-Carbon-Graphic-Design-Helmet/ for $430.

Or if you don't have that much cash and are Ok with purple, there are 3 left on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/TSG-Solid-Purple-Helmet-Skateboard/dp/B0198GIDEG/ for $289.

You could also try your luck on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313.TR3.TRC2.A0.H0.Xtsg+pass+helmet.TRS0&_nkw=tsg+pass+helmet&_sacat=0

Decent alternatives are:

  1. Steelbird Air2 from India $95 - https://www.ebay.com/p/18020910525 (might have to wait a month for it to ship)
  2. Triple8 Downhilll $300 - https://www.amazon.com/Triple-Eight-Downhill-Helmet-X-Small/dp/B00IS6KJ0Y/
  3. New Olders $250 (with shipping) - https://store.newolders.com/en/skateboarding-downhill-helmets/downhill-helmet-avitar.html (might take about a month to get but tons of color options)
  4. Predator DH6-Xg $385 - https://www.amazon.com/Predator-Certified-Helmet-DH6-Xg-Gloss/dp/B07SJBMWMF/

Good luck. They are hard to find because they are in demand. Kind of like when you have a hard time getting a reservation at a popular restaurant. Hopefully their production will ramp up to meet the demand and this problem will go away.

Thanks for that!

Yeah there is something about the sleek look I can seem to deny. Ha. I have a Bell Super DH and love it but keep thinking that TSG looks nice!  Would be nice to have the full face for the colder months.

All correct, but avoid new olders.  Their shipping states 2 weeks, but it took mine 3 months or so after constantly bugging them.  They only replied when I threatened a paypal dispute.  And the helmet I got I gave away, it was that bad.  But I haven't tried their full face, only their half cut version.  The sizing was so off, a medium adult was even too painful for a 9 year old to put on let alone fit me.

Hi,

Currently wearing an alternative - not that lightweight though > 1450g, but very convenient I found (BE/EUROPE) for autumn / winter season, and reasonable price (200 EUR) / decent brand.
