Looking for something lighter. The hope is we can go on 20ish mile rides together. Mten3 - 10 inch wheel not very roadworthy 14D low price, light, limited range. Does it actually go 18.5mph? One video review said it topped out at 16. 14S better range. Limited to 16mph? MCM5 it's a beast, she won't outgrow it. Heaviest and most expensive option. Yunicycle Posted June 24, 2019 Share Posted June 24, 2019 I believe 14s is 18.6 mph not 16mph. I would recommend either 14s or 16s (22mph, I know it's not on your list). My daughter weighs 90lbs and rides the 14s, but she rides my 16s just fine. She will upgrade to my 16s when I upgrade my wheel. I would lean more towards the 16s as 16" wheel just rides much better than a 14" wheel and not that much weight difference. My 2cents anyways. meepmeepmayer Posted June 24, 2019 Share Posted June 24, 2019 This is THE excuse to get an MCM5. You wouldn't want your daughter to ride a weak, unsafe wheel, would you? Get the best! It's not even an excuse, it's a justification(I am biased towards the MCM5 despite not having one.) That shouldn't be too heavy. MCM5 is 37lbs, 14S 32lbs, 14D 30lbs acording to ewheels. I don't think the downgrade is worth it for the weight savings, your daughter seeems heavy enough for all three. Or ask her which one she likes. She better choose right The 16S idea isn't bad either. She could get about 20 miles of range on it, but was quickly frustrated by the "please decelerate". I'm going to upgrade her to an MCM-5 now that she is 15 and weighs 115 lbs. She wants more speed, and her wheel is 18 months old at this point, but still runs great. As a first wheel, I'd recommend the KS-14S ... bigger battery so she can go further before speed starts to decrease due to battery. Also, the shell on the 14D seems to be indestructible as her wheel has taken so many hits from her and her friends learning to ride. Now that she's an experienced rider, she is less likely to drop the MCM-5, which I think is a bit more fragile than the KS-14D (but I don't own one, so I can't speak to it). My MCM5 feels like a tank. Sure, the shell perhaps scratches easier (but not convinced). However, mine has had lots of tumbles and it's just fine. AtlasP Posted June 24, 2019 Share Posted June 24, 2019 The V8 is usually a fantastic wheel for someone that size/weight. (And considerably cheaper than many of the alternatives being discussed.) The only hiccup would be requirement to do 20+ mile rides together (not a common requirement for new riders of that size), which is at the upper end of what the V8 would be able to do before more significant speed throttling. I think if I were in your situation I'd get her the KS16S--can do ~20 mph and well over 35 miles range (so some headroom to grow) while having a 16" wheel (which I just feel is safer than only 14" for speeds in the upper teens and low 20s). Conversely I don't understand why anyone would get a 14" MCM5 over a 16" KS16S since they're the same exact price and within 1.5 lbs in weight. (Yes the MCM5 can go slightly faster, but on a 14" wheel I don't want to go that fast.) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I've definitely beat mine up a bit more than usual but I'll throw in that the shell is in fact the weakest part of the wheel. I was trying to ride down a 6 foot tall 30 degree grade slab of concrete and jumped off at around 4 feet up. I cracked the shell right by each of the screws for half of an entire side of the wheel + lots of scratches. Did my best at an apoxy job and its OK now. But to OP, unless she's gunna be super rough with it the MCM5 is a great wheel for both you and her! I ride mine and I'm 180lbs without ever feeling like it's straining. Thing is punchy as heck. Honestly, I'd go for an 18 inch wheel because of how much more stable they are, but given you're in FL, I don't think rough road is much of an issue out there compared to NYC. I'm 10lbs heavier than your daughter, but also would love a wheel that's not super heavy. I started with the V5f+ last yr and now want to go for longer distance and get some headroom on speed. I keep thinking if I consider a 16S, shouldn't the Tesla also be considered? Unless you think that would be wayy too heavy? Two different wheels when it comes to performance and range. For the $100 different I'd go with the Tesla all day long, however different feel, different build quality; you'll definitely want to pad the Tesla if you're new. I have a friend who owns one of those (along with a Monster 100V) and he seems to love it. Weight isn't much of an issue on these things IMO, I live in a walk-up and I find myself just wheeling it up and down the stairs. How would you describe the difference in feel exactly? I've heard KS/inmotions have a more rubbery feel, while Gotways have this smoothness to them. Mcm5 feels so nice and smooth. I've been riding for about a yr, so won't need to pad the Tesla. Hoping to try a Tesla in NYC soon to test how it compares vs the MCM5. Ha, his Tesla is noob padded pretty heavily, I doubt he'd mind letting you test drive. I don't believe he has had to adjust the magnets for the pedals since he got it, and that was in February. And yes, we are a small group of recent Dualtron converts over to the EUC world so our rides aren't of the 40 MPH variety yet Soon enough though!
