My MSX is coming in today!!!

I realize this is just me being happy and not a productive post at all. But.... I'm excited so...

What to do first? I heard take precautions bc the seat can fall off. Any more must-do mods? Slime? Extra padding?

Replace the side pads :)

They hurt!

Mine came with the crappy side pads that tore up right away.  I replaced them with yoga mat material.  But then Jason at ewheels sent me the Gotway replacements which are super thick, but I haven't put them on as I think they would be uncomfortable.  Anyone use them?

Mine came with the black ones, not the original grey ones. Admittedly I was gripping the MSX way too tight when I originally got it which was quite painful, so I don't know how they will feel now.  In any case, they fell off quite easily, and due to the thickness they have a pronounced angle which digs into the calves.

I'm using baby bumper material right now, and some lifted pads for accelerating up hills.

Are the angled side pads worth it?  I may do this.

It definitely helps for accelerating up hills although it's not like it turns the acceleration into anything exciting.  More like anemeic into tolerable.

I found that you want them out of the way for normal riding. I tried putting them closer but if they "catch" too early you can't lean effectively which ironically impedes your acceleration.  So put them far enough forward that they only work during inclines.  You just need a small bump too, nothing too huge.  I'm using a 3/4 or 2cm lift and it's working ok.

MSX has cruise ship acceleration and braking and you can't really do anything about it.

Ok, thanks for the advice.  I am a pretty dynamic rider so I think maybe they will just get in the way.  I don't really enjoy hill climbing anyway, and on the times that I have had to I just squeeze the wheel between my calves and force it.  I'm fairly heavy @ 220lbs so I can use that to my advantage to push the wheel around.

Actually I don't find the acceleration or braking to be an issue.  The wheel does require a different style to get the performance though.  I did some tests with braking @ 30km/h vs my expensive bike with hydraulic brakes, and IIRC the bike stopped in 12 paces and the MSX was at 14, so not significantly different.  In order to brake hard like this though you have to adopt a sitting braking style - basically you crouch down like you are about to sit in a chair.  Otherwise the normal style of braking is really slow.

As someone who cannot jump a V5F, Any tips for jumping an MSX?

I find it too heavy to jump really, although I haven't tried a lot.  I can go up curbs at low speed but it's more that I hop and the large wheel is able to roll up the curb without my weight on it.  It's much different than my KS16 which I could squeeze between my calves and easily jump over an upright pop can or similar.

Now jumping off things is fine.  I've taken mine down a staircase (although I probably wouldn't do it again) and routinely jump off curbs.  Even have done a 2.5 foot drop off of a deck and it handles it no problem.

I do the sit back thing and it still feels slow to me

I find the problem with the sit back technique is that it bends your legs and invites braking wobbles. I tried braking with straighter legs, and it seemed better.

Is this compared to smaller wheels? I was considering an MSX just because it seems like it would be more comfortable to ride a bigger, fatter wheel than the 18xl. I also feel like the braking on the xl is a bit slow, but I'm fine with the acceleration. But maybe I just need to refine my technique.

That's funny, at least with the MSX the sitting technique can cure the wobbles on braking for me.

It's compared to smaller wheels. I miss the kick and zippiness. But the power and cushion from the bigger tire makes long distances and off roading better.

I hated the bigger wheel for the first 100km until I learned how to ride it better and accepted it for what it is.

Can't have it all in one wheel!

Did you get 100v or 84v?

Mine came in from ewheels not long ago.  It's an upgrade from inmotion v8.  It has pros/cons compared to inmotion v8, as someone above said you really can't have one wheel for everything.  Everyone knows all the pros, the ride is amazing, fast, and the huge tire is awesome.  Top speed is pretty crazy, performance is what you buy this wheel for!

Let me talk about some of the cons though.

1) The trolley handle is pretty awful, compared to any kinsong and my inmotion v8 it's us a 1/10 and my inmotion v8 would be like a 9/10.

2) The shell feels pretty cheap

3) I was told gotway makes very quiet wheels, but my inmotion v8 is quieter.  At idle the msx has this gurgling noise.  There is also the fan going on/off all the time, even after like a 5 min ride at under 20 mph the fan will do this on/off behavior which is strange.  I have videos of both, apparently this is all normal.  I guess it came as a shock to me given my inmotion v8 doesn't have either of these and is practically silent.

Gurgling sound at idle:

Fan on/off:

4) The app is glitchy, and will crash.  Inmotion's app is way better.  I use darkness bot for iOS but that sometimes doesn't pick up the total mileage for some reason

5) Comfort wise, the pedal angle and side pads aren't the best, I really feel paid in my legs after like 10 miles.  Maybe it will take time for legs to adjust.

6) The seat attachment method is essentially just putting it on, not practical.  They should have had a velcro or something at least... the seat will fall off at any bump you hit.  Also I can't ride seated yet, I tried it but bailed.  I'm a pretty new rider though.  Any tips for riding seated would be appreciated!

Overall I love the wheel though because of the ride and performance!  The quirks above are just something I'll have to get adjusted to.  I'll be adding a nikola plus and possibly a monster to my collection eventually when the newer versions are out.

To answer photorph: I got an 84v, I like it a lot so far, wish it had a little more get up and go. Maybe should have gone with 100v? I haven't noticed any of those sounds yet, probably can't hear anything over my excitement. I do hear some weird noise when braking hard, but that's about it.

I hope this thing is as zippy on the trails as my V5F was. That thing is surprisingly fun off road

Day 1 impressions:

Put in 20 miles today and overall I really like cruising on this wheel just over 20mph. I'm still getting used to the speed as I came from a V5F, but its nice to feel comfortable on 15-20mph roads right now.

One super weird thing: My left upper calf is super sore, like I got a knot or for some reason tense up there when riding the MSX. This never happened to me with the V5F and I find it strange that my right leg feels fine.

No falls yet. This wheel feels like 1000 lbs compared to my V5F so i've been riding pretty conservatively. I doubt I even broke 25mph today. The roads have a lot of potholes in them which scares me a little.

So far I love it! I do miss the zippyness of my V5F but I also think I havent gotten used to throwing my weight around to get that good acceleration. I need to learn to lean like Kujirolls and Michael Jackson.

Canceling my OneWheel Pint order for this was waaay worth it. I do want to try the next flagship OW whenever that comes out, though.

$1800 ish was a nice deal but I had to wait 30 days and it felt like a year. Will prob go back to ewheels for my next purchase.

I have a onewheel XR also, and msx vs pint is a no brainer MSX!

Since they are similarly priced, what are your thoughts on the MSX vs OW XR? I really do enjoy the feeling of the OW stance

I did a comparison between EUC, ow XR and Electric skateboards here.

Nice write-up! I guess they are hard to compare huh? That being said carving is most certainly a thing on the EUC imho. It has better turning than a OW, I just feel like most EUC choose riders tend go in straight lines for whatever reason.

I still don't think I've unlocked the power of this wheel. I'll lean forward until I'm about to fall off but I can tell it's nowhere near max. How can I aggressively shift my weight besides simply leaning?

The "chair" thing works for me for aggressive braking, but I'm not sure how to apply that going forward

Also, death wobble has thrown me off twice at high speeds and already. Something that never phased me on the V5F. How do I practice getting over this? I've found at low speeds bending my knees a good amount initiates a death wobble so maybe I'll do some of that.

All I can say is time and practice.  I also got wobbles but after 2 full charges it’s getting better.

Do you have a seat?  That’s tough and threw me off, got the wobbles when I squatted to sit down.  Luckily I was going slow but scratched up my shell.

I do. I'm 5'6" and I find trying to ride the seat ridiculous! Getting that low feels super unstable and even if I figure it out I doubt it will be comfortable

You went from standing to seated? That took me quite a while to learn. I learned by kicking off seated.

5'5" here. And yes... it was really hard in the beginning. Then I realised that it requires dedicated practice so I went to a track and practiced.

I made a little compilation and uploaded it just now.

After having ridden with my angled sidepads for a good while, I learned how to utilize them for maximum acceleration. And I must say, if I want, the MSX moves my 200lbs torso like a damn rocket.

I have the angled sections far enough forward that I can only reach them if I crouch a bit more than I would normally do, uphills included. For the maximum acceleration I now need to crouch, which enhances acceleration by itself already. Then I lean a bit on the humps, and I’m seriously gone.

I’d say more like a Mercedes S500. The explosive power is there, but you have to dig deeper to get to it.

Nope, you chose the correct version. The 100V one doesn’t have more ”get up and go”. It only has a higher top speed and a good deal less range.

Zippy the MSX is not, unless I misunderstand the meaning for the term. Larger wheels require you to move more mass (lean further) for the same acceleration, no way around it.

Do you by any chance start with your left foot on the pedal? The upper edge of the leg contact point is seriously sharp, and the original sidepads do not soften the blow at all.

Another thing is that the dihedral angle of the pedals is different left and right. Mine measured 15˚ and 13˚. Might cause additional tension.

They ought to. But from all wheels manufactured so far, the MSX is the second best pothole survivor. The huge tire, large diameter, huge power, and a rock hard pedal mode are a killer combination. I have survived dozens of out-of-nowhere potholes that I was sure would finally eat me up. I have not crashed on the MSX once. Tumbling from failing a difficult offroad obstacle at walking speed doesn’t count.

Knees towards the ground, hips relatively straight. Nothing else to it really.

Pretty much anything asymmetrical. Carve left or right, lift one heel only, push the wheel with the other knee, etc. While braking itself may even cause wobbles, it’s a good idea to try and slow down when they happen. The wobble is slower, and if it indeed throws you off, you crash at a slower speed.
