There is a reason these things are designed without sharp metal studs sticking out of them. Could you achieve the same result with something less pointy? One additional benefit. If you crash and those metal studs hit something, they might break the plastic shell they are attached to. With larger, softer things like this, the pressure is distributed over a wider area of shell. To remove the instability? see both posts above. Wider is better, but not too wide or new dangers arise.
