Wide Tyre/Wheel EUC's

Recommended Posts

Whilst perusing various websites looking at various different EUC's I came a cross "Wide Tyre" EUC's.

I'm not surewhat the benefits or disadvatages would be but thought I would bring it to the forum and see what the experts have to say.

I'm guessing stability is improved and due to the fact that there is more tyre in contact with the riding surface it will use more juice/battery power due to higher friction.

I'm also guessing that tight turns/turning on the spot,  may be a little more difficult but travelling over soft surfaces such a sand/gravel would be easier.

Here is the wide tyre IPS

It will be interesting to see if anyone has seen any other wide tyre in the 14" - 18" range and also see what peoples opinions on these wide tyre EUC's.

I think once you learn to ride it is much better to have regular 'rounded' tire so you can nicely lean into the wide turns and get the 'snowboard' feel B)  Big tires are good though I think, but they should be rounded -- the Solowheel Xtreme has 2.5" wide tires and that works very well; I just bought a Schwalbe 'big apple' balloon tire of 2" and will try that in the future.  I would be worried with the above wheel that it gets unstable at higher speeds, wobbling between one side and the other.

I am curious about a wider tire too and I wonder how well they handle off road.  I think one ewheel that has a wider tire that gets overlooked is the IPS 192 (http://en.iamips.com/ips192.html).  If you remove the seat and post, perhaps replacing them with a handle of some sort, it becomes a bit more like what we are used to except this one has a three inch wide tire that has a rounded cross-section.  Lower the price and up the max speed and we might have some more interest.

be interesting to see how things change with a thinner tyre.

Would be willing to ride it, cheaper then a Q3 and have bluetooth app, they are turning in video no problem, like the Q3. But the tire looks weird in some photos like they peiced two wheels together, shows a seam in the middle...

I'd rather go for a beach-cruiser, mountainbike or chopper fat kind of tire, so the rounded shape too. then you could play with airpressure for the learning stages. But that maybe increases the risk of snakebites when you hit a sharp edge.

This is the 3rd wheel I bought and I can say that I do like it.I wanted to get a "go anywhere" wheel or the closet thing to a 4x4 of the EUC world and this pretty much is.The tire is non pneumatic so there is no concern about punctures on rough terrain which it handles pretty well.Riding on sloped surfaces takes a little turning compensation not present on a wheel with a rounded tire but it isn't that difficult. The advantage is being able to handle gravel, sand, grass or an "off road" surface much easier than any rounded wheel and the fat tire allows coming to a complete stop without having to dismount.I got it from electricunicyclesonline and it arrived in about 3 weeks. The downside was that my unit wouldn't charge due to a bad BMS and I did not want to ship the whole unit back to China for a bad BMS so I decided to do a mod where I installed a door on the side of the unit to allow the installation of removable battery packs which works pretty well.(My first wheel was the Huaxni h1 which has removable batteries so I already had the parts I needed). I use the 2 130wh batteries used with the H1 or I can use the 260 wh battery that came with the kahuna once I get a replacement BMS.

Ah its a full rubber tire! Plot twist!
How rigid is the rubber? does it flex a bit when riding sloped?

How is the grip of the tire on gravel or offroad, being a slick? From the pictures it doesnt look like it would work very well on a wet forest incline with leaves and dirt.

Jrkline ,  your third post and  it does sound like a bit of a sales pitch. The Solowheel xtreme, which I own as do many eucs happily go of road, what's your usp? Standing up straight stationary musty man the tyre it's quite stiff.

@Chrisxr2 @jrkline

Hey guys! Just wanted to chime in; jrkline and I are doing business and he is very enthusiastic about his unicycles. He owns a variety of models and pays close attention to how they act, and he will definitely offer a valuable perspective. I'm excited to see you on the forums man!

In particular, not many people have posted about the Kahuna or other non-pneumatic unis yet, so I'm happy to see more info on here.

Hoping to see a review of your perspective on the King Song 18" when you get it :D

"  your third post and  it does sound like a bit of a sales pitch. " If it were a sales pitch,Why would I mention that I had received it with a bad BMS and had to mod it in order to ride it? Time to engage the brain box Chris ! I simply posted my experience as an owner of a Kahuna since that is the topic of interest here.I don't believe  the tire is totally solid. It is a stiff ride but it does have pretty good traction on wet and slippery surfaces.I surmise that the tire has a hollow center so that it functions like a "run flat" car tire.It does have a little give on a sloped surface but not much. The ride feels like a pneumatic tire wheel at 50 psi or so.I also have the Huaxni H1 14'' wheel and an IPS a130 with a 12'' wheel. The kahuna is a more stable ride but less maneuverable than rounded pneumatic tires. Overall, this is a very easy wheel to ride and would be good for newbies or anyone who wants to get riding fast or likes off-roading.My whole approach to EUC's is to experience has wide a variety of rides and differences as possible in my newest of passions which is why all 3 of the wheels I have collected thus far are very different. My next wheel which is currently shipping and yet to arrive is the King Song 18'' that Kevin mentioned.I'm sure it will offer new thrills I have yet to experience.
