New GT16 makes buzzing noise. Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

Today I recieved a new GT16 via Aliexpress and noticed that the unicycle is making a buzzing noise. Check it out here. I also noticed that the wheel is not smooth when I walk it with my hand. It's like if the wheel vibrates as it moves. This is unlike my IPS I5 which has no buzzing and is smooth. Another thing, on the top, the speaker-ish icon button (next to the power button) seems to do absolutely nothing. Can any fellow GT16 owners confirm if this is normal or if something is wrong. Thank you.

The buzzing noise and vibration in the video is 100% normal. The GT16 is a "loud" wheel.

Not sure what you mean by "the wheel is not smooth when I walk it with my hand". If you just refer to the sound it makes in the second half of the video when you move it, that's perfectly normal. If you also mean a tiny bit of resistances to rolling that appear at the same frequency as that sound when you roll it very slowly, that's also perfectly normal. This is just the discrete nature of the magnets in the motor showing itself when you rotate the motor really slowly (so it has to "jump" between magnets to rotate with precision). You can also feel the magnets if the wheel is off, you lay it on its side, and you just rotate the tire (slowly). That should also work with your i5, but maybe you feel it less there, but it should be the same.

By the way, if you step on the wheel and do pendulums in place (quick direction reversals), you'll hear a grinding sound on changing direction. That is just the same thing (discrete nature of magnets) but with more power input (because your weight is there now). Just in case that is the next thing you wonder about.

None of what I described is mechanical and indicates any problem, it's just the electronics making themselves heard. If there is anything else you worry about (probably there isn't and you're just hyper-sensitive with your new wheel), ask away:)

No idea about that button and what it is supposed to do, I don't have a GT16.

Thanks for the input Meepmeepmayer. Just to clarify, the GT16 is producing 2 electrical sounds. One is the obvious high pitch sound that I know all EUC make, and in this case, is loud on the GT16. The 2nd sound is my concern, because, if not a buzzing sound, its more like a crackling and static sound, as if something is sparking inside. After doing a short test ride, the crackling sound is loud when going when going over 8kph. If another GT16 owner can chime in and compare, that would be of great help.

As for the speaker button, I pop off the "button" and found out its just a hard piece of glue underneath. Its the button on the left in the pictures. No function at all. Again, if someone else can verify, that would be great. I just want to make sure that I wasn't sold an item with defects. Thanks

That's perfectly normal, too. Other wheels do it as well, just the GT16 does it extra loud. It's some kind of sparking inside the motor. No reason for concern.

@Toto
 I can't say I experience the sounds you're hearing, but I 'can' say that my speaker/Bluetooth button also does nothing. I doesn't seem to affect the wheel in any way.  My GT16 V2 was a window model, and I bought it from an euc store here in Switzerland (last April?) It now has 470km trouble free.
