Scubadragonsan Posted November 15, 2018 Posted November 15, 2018 Has anyone besides me experience "wheeling sickness?" Wheeling sickness is defined by me as "a state, both physically and mentally, in which one finds him/herself in daily lives having a "floating" sensation as a result of wheeling." It may also have the elements of euphoria and addiction. As such, I prefer to call it a "sickness" because there is a strong crave for it once you are wrapped up by it. In my daily bodily movements, while I am walking, my legs feel like as though they are still on the wheel. Whichever direction I decide to go, I simply lean toward that direction just as if I were wheeling. I even tend to walk faster which may have to do with believing that my legs are not doing the work, but a wheel is moving underneath me. Every movement becomes “smoother” gliding. Is this an after effect of riding the wheel a lot? BTW, no drugs/alcohol involved.
Mmhmmm Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 When learning to perfect a new and dynamically performed full-body action skill-set, the developing brain-usage pattern becomes a pleasure path, which we desire to repetetively stimulate. There are many vitalizing benefits to this sort of brain redesign during a lifetime. Of course, moderation and variety are important in order to limit the flashback side-effects that you describe. Maybe mix it up with skiing, stand-up paddleboading, scrambling, glissading, or the sort.

So @Hunka Hunka Burning Love Are you back to riding again after you accident? I lost track of you talking about quitting to ride or if you picked it up again once the pain and dust settled down. Btw I had a pot hole fall a few days ago but am ok due seeing the pot hole and wearing all safety gear. I will ride again once I get my Inmotion V8 looked at or I get my KS18L back from warranty service, if weather allow it. The lift button got stuck so now it don't work or rather doesn't move on my Inmotion V8.

I still try to accelerate by leaning forwards though Why, oh why, can't we upgrade permanently as a species from these "legs that God gave us" 1.0.1?

But as it's turning colder and colder as winter is coming the time spent on the wheel gets shorter and shorter.

For me my arm still bugs me a little, but it’s getting better over time. I just came to the sad realization that I’ve got too many responsibilities to be injured so these risky sort of hobbies should be best avoided. I might ride again one day I hope. I still like watching and seeing other people ride though. I’m just taking an extended hiatus away from the sport. If I could find a working arm to shoulder brace or thicker fixed elbow pad that could lessen shoulder/arm injuries I might be back sooner, but then there’s the potential knee injury risks... so for now I’ve hit the pause button temporarily. Other hobbies like car repair and VR gaming help fill the void. I hope you are able to get your wheels working again!

They're usually stuffed rather well not even counting the pads, and the tough fabric keeps the road rashes at bay. Mine looks like this: It looks mostly like a normal vaxed denim jacket, but it takes a beating quite well. The padding in the shoulders and over the elbows are the thinner stiff type, but with the thickness of the jacket it is enough to dampen the impact. I added a D3O pad in the back, since I can survive a broken arm, but not as easily with a broken back. An added bonus of the thinner pads, is that you won't look as much as an incarnation of The Hulk, or like some caricature from the 80s. But if you're willing to part with some money, you can get good looking jackets with kevlar, D3O and become stuffed enough to be able to bounce like a ball without hurting too much. I'm also looking for new knee pads, since my snap-shuts just cover the knee-cap. Mine look like this: They're quite good actually, and have saved my knees more than once. But I'm looking for something like this: But I have still to find a set that doesn't feel like they're grinding on the sides of the wheel. Another part of me looking, rather than buying, is that I already feel like I look like robocop. So in an ideal world I would find really good stuff, that looks subdued enough to minimize the "wheeling alien" feel.

I feel bad for you Hunka! Unfortunately protecting the knees with a high quality articulating brace is easier than protecting the shoulder. Trust me I custom design braces (orthotics) for a living and if it was easy and biomechanically sound I would have fabricated one for myself. To be 100 percent protected you would need to completely immobilize the arm and shoulder with a custom mold that essentially is a full length fracture brace. Yes I design and fabricate these but they are only met for post-op fractures where the fractured bone is still calcifying. The custom arm cast/ plastic mold would then need to be affixed to a body mold to eliminate any twisting, torquing or superior transilatory migration of the arm/shoulder complex during a hard fall. That is a lot of gear. With all of this apparatus attached to your body your riding enjoyment would be diminished significantly along with your balance. That would be no fun. Unfortunately there are no easy, off the shelf solutions to protect such a complex joint with all of the muscles and surrounding ligaments. My fracture pains me daily and both my wife and employees hate the thought of me riding but I’m at a point in my life that if I fracture it again I’ll just shut down my business and retire. I fully understand your circumstances. It’s a hard decision. I’m so glad you have other hobbies that you enjoy. Take care buddy!
Unventor Posted November 20, 2018 Posted November 20, 2018 @Hunka Hunka Burning Love I think in your case, you are much better of on a couch with nurses keeping an eye on you. Just a hunch I have....
meepmeepmayer Posted November 20, 2018 Posted November 20, 2018 I never experienced this wheeling sickness, but occasionally I'm annoyed by how slow walking is. That never happened pre-wheel @Hunka Hunka Burning Love Hoping you'll find your wheel-mojo again. A crash or injury (wheel or not) can indeed be pretty deflating and ruin your mood for quite a long time, especially if something still aches (but also long after). And then there's the winter cold. As the spring sun shines (may take a while where you are maybe more like summer warmth) I hope you get the urge again. Just remember how much joy you had on the wheel(s). And check on your batteries so they don't feel neglected. As we recently have learned in this fantastic thread with actual qualified information (not just guessing and rumors), the best way to prevent shoulder injuries is shoulder strength and muscles. So why not use this break and say "When I step on the wheel again, I'm going to be 20% stronger there!". The training should also improve the healing so it's something that makes sense for you to do anyways.

I totally agree Meeps about shoulder strengthening and ROM therapy to prevent injuries but I would feel more comfortable knowing exactly what @Hunka Hunka Burning Love did to his shoulder before heading down that path. In the US a licensed therapist could not treat Hunka without first having an RX and diagnosis in hand in fear of exasperating the injury. I cannot legally treat patients without an RX or I could loose my license. I just wish Hunka would see an orthopedist for a definitive diagnosis. Come on Hunka! I promise ortho will not stick any devices up an area where the light doesn't shine.

I was wearing my motorcycle jacket (the thicker colder weather one) all the inserts. Things would have been a lot worse without it and my Hillbilly wristguards. I had knee pads on so no knee injuries occured. I compare it to running and all of a sudden leaping forwards at a low height landing with all your weight on your hands and arms while sliding to a stop on your belly. My insert elbow pad wasn’t strapped to my arm tightly so my elbow sort of missed it on landing. I wonder if my arm would have been less injured if the pad had cushioned some of the force. I think it’s luck of the draw and how you happen to fall that determines if you have lasting injuries. It’s always when you least expect it that you end up kissing the asphalt. Maybe if I had Arnold Schwarzenegger shoulders that might have helped. Hard to say. Force goes where it wants to go in a hard impact. The pain is mild and varies from day to day. I’ve got to find some time to visit a physician to have it checked over. There’s good and bad days. Daily pain would be a harsh reminder to be careful. Falling again for me isn’t an option. Oh well, what can you do. Hope it doesn’t happens to others, but you know we’ll likely see more of those alien bug implantations sooner or later. Ride with caution out there, my compadres.

If your elbow misses the pad, you're f*cked. When I bought my jacket, I kind of checked how far up/down/to the sides the elbow pads would go. In summers when I take out the lining and have just a t-shirt under it, it's not ideal. The bear suit and POC elbow guards are much better when you have just a minimal fabric layer beneath them. I'm thinking about going for a second jacket and pay a little more this time. My goal being more rain resistance, better abrasion resistance, and d3o paddings in all positions... Also I "fixate" the positions of the elbow guards with the flexmeters. With those on, they don't move out of the way at all. It sometimes feel like I've spent a bloody fortune on protection. Enough to buy a cheap brand wheel at least. But OTOH that is the money that may prevent one of those "life altering" experiences, that makes you wish you spent even more. So far, I've fallen badly five times, so I think I already have gotten more than my money's worth out of the investment. Five: Fallen downhill because of overcharge, maybe 5mph. Fallen sideways because of curb hidden in a water puddle, maybe 15mph. Fallen diagonally because I clipped a curb with the pedal, maybe 10mph. Fallen sideways because of a flat tyre when turning into the street to cross the tram tracks, maybe 15mph. Fallen jack-knife style because of the battery fault, maybe 20-23mph. The third and the last one were the scariest. The third because of the twisting motion that made me run in a strange angle right out into the street trying to recover. No chance, destroyed a knee-pad. The fifth because of the higher speed, the brutal impact and the suddenness. Trashed my helmet (visor cap broken, and a scratched dent in the front). So far (touch wood), the amount of blood-loss is counted in milliliters, the amount of bone tissue hurt is nil, and the recovery periods one day or two. There are some good things about being an old skater, I still have some of the necessary muscle memories left in my decrepit middle-aged body.
Unventor Posted November 22, 2018 Posted November 22, 2018 @Scatcat well you saw my major crash at first hand. That made me rethink how I invested to be better prepared when the next accident would occur. That accident made my elbow pad slide too. This cannot happen anymore...I think.😏 Now that next one was just a few days ago. It turns out that I came out of the waterfilled pot hole with next to no injury. A 10min sore finger and a few days of overworked muscles in my arms just above my elbow. Both the flexmeter wristguards, poc jacket, mc trousers with hip and knee d30 padding and hard shell backpack all preformed great. Next on my buy list: Ruroc helmet and better head and rear lights and maybe more reflexes. Btw @Scatcat let me know when you got your new wheel. I love to have a look at it.

Yeah, some hip protection would be nice. I'm thinking of an LS pioneer helmet myself, one with dual visors: one full clear and flip down sun-visor inside. It is more of a motocross/adventure helmet and weighs in at 1300 grams approx, but it would be good when the weather is not exactly hot. I think it will be another one and a half weeks before I see my wheel, the delivery is estimated to the third of December.
Unventor Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 Just ordered a Ruroc helmet and light adjustion optics and by comunication buildin service this morning aka 5.40am this morning....
Dingfelder Posted November 28, 2018 Posted November 28, 2018 I've had a weird perceptual quirk related to motion before. I don't know if I can describe it properly because it was long ago, but it happened more than once. I was riding an escalator, lost in thought with my eyes focused a step or two in front of me, ready to step off when the time came. When I did, and looked up, somehow the world looked like it was still moving, though I was standing still on the escalator exit platform. Really dizzying and disorienting. I almost felt like I was going to fall over. I probably didn't describe that right. I have more the memory of how visceral and weird it felt than precisely how it happened.
