KS-18XL - a review by houseofjob

Fantastic summary. Can't wait to get my hands on it.

I'd be impressed as hell if I got 75-miles on this wheel. I'm anticipating an MSX range of ~50-miles, mixed riding. This is at ~175-pounds. I guess Chooch weight guys (120-pounds) can enjoy those super long range numbers :)

Thanks Marty!

Yeah, 75 miles range is realistically just a marketing point for anyone who likes to remotely push their wheel or isn’t a super lightweight, but important for the manufacturer and dealers trying to attract newbie buyers I think.

Looking forward to your thoughts!

Good video!

  • The pedal size comparison with other wheels is really helpful. Did you notice any increased pedal scraping tendencies with the bigger ones?
  • 75 miles... mmhkay. I will believe those inflated range numbers if and when @Marty Backegets his test model and does a range test under conditions I trust are representative:efee8319ab: But I'm not betting my money on it. 80km/50 miles is my guess, like all the other 1600Wh wheels. But who knows, maybe the 18L/18XL is magically more efficient. Marty will tell.
  • Where does the extra weight come from? The battery adds 2kg/4lbs, what is the rest? What's going on there?
  • I hope they fix the too small grip tape for the release model.

Not in particular.

They are a tad thinner than the V10F pedals (which, for my feet, always felt a little to wide), so I think these are the most ideal big pedals / pedal shape for minimal scraping.

I think unless the pedal exactly matches your foot shape/size, you can always technically scrape the pedals if you try hard enough.

It would be interesting to take the popular battery configs and measure the range according to different weight classes then plot this on a weight vs. range chart.

Not really sure (kinda wondered that briefly as well).

Possibly fortification from the bigger XL pedals? and maybe a slightly bigger size BMS?

Worst case, at least there's flat areas so you can griptape to suit your taste.

From what I've seen, production version of new pedal is totally flat and completely covered by grip tape. Here is comparision photo ( courtesy of https://kingsong.pl ).

There is no production version of the KS18XL yet, it’s still in a pre-order holding pattern.

AFAIK, the picture you post is just a beta.

The eWheels pre-prod looked like a bigger version of he current pedals, machined and black paint coat finish.

You are probably right - I assumed that it's production pedal because it was published on a official KS distributor online shop. This green painted floor known from KS factory movies also led me to think it's official.

It is King Song, but they can produce a simpler-looking beta / pre-production sample for proof-in-concept, before an official mass production rollout.

My guess also -50 - 55 miles based on what others report they tend to achieve with mixed riding on similarly configured wheels. The XL is/will be heavier than the MSX. I wonder if the weight difference it is significant enough to have a statistically significant impact on range.

The weight difference between the wheels is less than the weight difference between moderately similar prospective riders. Maybe even the same rider with backpack or without.

So I don't think any such small weight difference will show at all when you look at range. It's going to be drowned out by that or even just small variations in tire pressure, ambient temperature, or simply where and even how one rides (paved vs. unpaved riding surface, riding style and speed, ...).

I certainly would't worry about the 18XL's "higher" weight in range considerations:efee47c9c8: Seems pointless.

points of view and necessity ....

By my side, L is just at the weight limit ..... luckily it's also enough in range for my needs and use, so XL could be in my target only with a dedicate firmware that will takes an advantage in instant power and 60kph max speed with the same ratio tuned of the L...

1554wh only to gain range don't justify the buy for my needs adding too a major weight ...

1554wh, instead, to gain torque and add more instant power and max speed , yes:clap3:

Yeah. I hear you. Different strokes for different folks.

For me it is sort of the opposite. Because the wheel is already very powerful - at least by today's standards. But who knows for certain what is down the road, and how I might feel when we arrive.

In the "grand schéma" range is not the most important factor for me either. I could've bought an MSX. Instead I bought an 18L with less range. For me it's about the total package. Personally,  I prefer the most brilliant to the most powerful (whatever my particular priorities dictate "most brilliant" to mean on a given purchase).

Today, my wheel lust is range, because it is now offered on my favorite wheel. It's like buying Viagra even though you don't need it - you ain't gotta need it to love it.
